when the umbilical cord falls off is what you've got what you're left with? Or does it fall off, as an outie, and then get sucked back in?

My wife says "our kids have ugly belly buttons because we didn't 'tape down' the remaning umbilicus.
I think she's full of shit & their BB's look fine to me. Often, an outie is a result of a minor herniation of some sort (need a doc to 'splain that, not me).

ok, but when the umbilical cord fell off was it an innie or an outie? And if it was an outie at the time does it mean it'll stay that way?

I think most if not all babies have outies at first when it falls off.

Your baby is damaged goods.
No, not really.
I have an innie. Not sure if that adds any value to this discussion or not.

i figured an outie would keep her from showing too much skin, so I was ok with that, but guess I'll have to wait to see.

Did you at least get him circumcised? You are a terrible parent if you didn't.

Your wife is full of shit.
It wouldn't have mattered if she had taped it down or not. It all depends on how the scar heals and something as simple as randomness. About 10% of babies are the lucky owners of the outtie.
The theory on umbilical hernias causing outties is just that, a theory. Most umbilical hernias in newborns will heal themselves in the first few years as the child grows. If your baby's bb's were affected by hernias, then they would appear to expand significantly or rise when your child is crying or doing anything else that strains the abdominal muscles.
Referring to body parts as "ugly" brings to mind possible issues with body image...

I played football with a guy who had an outie that looked like a penis. Thing was huge. I remember feeling sorry for him.

I have an outie. I like it. It's a small outie (insert your joke here). Though I will say it is becoming less "outie" as the years go by. Fortunately, it's still hanging in there fighting the good fight.

I thought my kids were weird when I noticed they all have no belly-buttons. Then I found out they were Coneheads.
