Its a fusion neck surgery.

Is "fusion neck surgery" code for something?

let people know what room you're in so people can call/send you shit if its not outpatient (which i doubt a fusion is). I wish I had gotten more things when I had my surgery, and wish I coulda talked to more people.

Ask for the bed what gots the coin slot... I think they calls 'em "Magic Fingers".

I had no problems picking up a signal @ Saint David's when both our kids were born.

it's a piece of cake. You'll be fine. When you wake up, you will be kinda hungry, that first meal after being under is allsome. get a double cheeseburger with bacon or something like that.

I was under anesthesia for so long that I had a serious lack of appetite...and the hospital food was actually pretty good once I could eat again.

fusion neck surgery sounds ... well ... like ... serious, and stuff. While I'd like to make a smart-ass response (and likely will before this post is over), I basically hope all goes well for you. If you're at Seton, they do have great wireless coverage. Take your laptop, or have someone bring you one. Also, the cafeteria downstairs is pretty darn good - you won't want for food. I think my original suggestion would be to set someone up to be the first to come see you when you first come out. I'm sure your chicka will be around, and perhaps your parents. Pick a buddy who'd you really like to see, and ask them to come see you when you first come out from being under.

(told you I couldn't resist) Don't have that friend be Derry. That kind of thrusting on a new neck CAN'T be kosher.

I've had the herniation so long that i started to develop a spinal deformity so the plate should help correct the problem.

To keep from damaging the eye socket, they have to go in through the rectum. Ain't no man gonna take that route with me.

Sometimes it's best to cut back on the internet research.

Here's another tip: Be sure to talk a lot and ask a lot of questions before the surgery and the anesthesiologist will be sure to knock you down sooner.

i have a list of questions that texdude2006 helped me with. He had a very similar surgery done on his lower back 5 years ago.

One of the questions is referring to post-op meds: medical marijuana? :smoke:

Another one i have to know is: do i have to have a catheter?
(NO CATHETERS AT ALL)

Ballaholic
02-14-2008, 02:27 PM
No to postop marijuana. Yes to postop morphine and/or vicodin. You very well may get a catheter during the surgery, but they'll probably take it out when they're done. So yes, some nurse will grab your junk and stick a tube in it, but you'll be asleep.

Rissin

have fun with your morphine drips. with them you wont even realize the catheter is there, well maybe :hookem:

You may very well wake up with that catheter and have it in post op but it will be the last thing on your mind...trust.

I don't know how yours will go, but the last guy I saw with a cervical fusion had a feeding tube down his nose for a while because his throat was too swollen to safely swallow food.

You're probably going to be on bedrest for at least a day or two and will have to wear a cervical brace for a while. I personally would keep the catheter in until you can more comfortably move around- just get them to tape it to your leg so it doesn't tug.

They will probably order a stronger narcotic like morphine or dilaudid as well as something oral, like norco or darvocet. The shots will be stronger, but the oral pills will last longer. Take the medicine well before you're in a lot of pain and it's easier to control.

Oh, and you should have come to NAMC for your surgery. I could have been your nurse postop, since you'll probably spend at least the first night in icu.

The firm I worked at last summer was defending a case where a offshore worker had that same surgery done. I sat in on a deposition of the head of neurosurgery at methodist in houston. Pretty big deal doc apparently. The doctor was describing it like it was no big deal, but the entire time I was just staring at the xrays and ct scans behind him with the big piece of metal on the guys neck. I saw the guy later and he seemed normal, if I hadn't known he had a big chunk of metal in his neck I would never have thought he did. Good luck man.

Post op-expect to be sore and sleepy for the first few days. You will feel worn out (to put it mildly). Docs will make sure you have the appropriate pain meds and that your pain is under control before you leave the hospital.

regarding the catheter, from experience, i offer this:

when the nurse is removing it, she will tell you to NOT LOOK and take a deep breath.

DO NOT FUCKING LOOK.
