did MY get tagged by SS before the throw to first?

More typical horrid Ranger baserunning that inning... Fat fuck gets his name back by completely giving himself up on a chopper to the P, instead of going back to 3rd & making the P get the out at 1st. Then Face, for some fucking unknown reason, goes back towards 2nd on a ball hit to his LEFT, & Pennington tags him before completing the DP to 1st.

If we weren't ahead by 8, I probably wouldn't own a laptop, phone, or remote anymore.

Absolutely awesome post by Newberg tonight! It's long, so you can read it yourself, but I had to highlight this part...

I think about Matt Treanor and Andres Blanco, and who’s more fortunate – them or us.

And, of course, I think about the veteran who bounced up and down like a kid as the ball began its downward arc toward his teammate in left field, the typically stoic ballplayer who leads because he’s supposed to, not because he insists on it, the untoolsy infielder whose steadiness has him all over the Ranger record books but who also sat far too high on a list that he’s a week away from coming off of forever, as his playoffless career will no longer be so.

I think the thing I’ll remember most about Texas 4, Oakland 3 on September 25, 2010, even more so than Cantu’s go-ahead single and stay-ahead homer or Andrus’s baserunning heroics, will be the way Michael Young reacted to the moment that went from game-on-the-line to ballgame, and the way his teammates reacted after the scrum was over, every one of them lining up to pay tribute to him on the field, a sign of the kind of respect most of us have for him but to a greater degree, as he’s set an example and set a tone for a group of players that have earned the right to play on.

Strong...

First, although Michael Young and Ian Kinsler are not in Sunday's lineup, they have already told manager Ron Washington they want to play in Monday's game in Texas because of the fans. Washington was trying to give both players two days off.

As for the Sunday lineups

Rangers (Colby Lewis)

1. Julio Borbon, CF
2. Esteban German, 2B
3. David Murphy, LF
4. Jeff Francoeur, DH
5. Chris Davis, 1B
6. Jorge Cantu, 3B
7. Mitch Moreland, RF
8. Andres Blanco, SS
9. Taylor Teagarden, C

Fucking Guzman can't even get into a game like this!

Gonna be Davis...

Rangers manager Ron Washington indicated Sunday that Jorge Cantu has earned a spot on the postseason roster.

That means the biggest question at first base is which left-handed bat -- Mitch Moreland or Chris Davis -- makes the 25-man playoff squad. Washington said he wants to get Cantu, Moreland and Davis as many at-bats as he can this week. A meeting of Washington and the front office personnel is planned for Tuesday to sort through the roster.

Today, Washington has Davis at first base, Cantu at third and Moreland in right field, giving all three of them a chance to hit.

If recent numbers are any indication, Davis would have the edge. Davis is 4-for-9 with a 2B, HR, RBI and four walks in 10 games since being recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City on Sept. 11. He also plays solid defense at first base and has replaced Moreland late in games at times when the Rangers have the lead.

Davis' good showing since his return has come at a time when Moreland has struggled. Coming into Sunday's game, Moreland was hitless in his last eight at-bats and 4-for-24 with 11 strikeouts in his last eight games.

CJ in Game 2...

Rangers manager Ron Washington said Sunday that he's planning on going with Cliff Lee in Game 1 of the ALDS on Wednesday, Oct. 5, followed by lefty C.J. Wilson in Game 2 (Thursday, Oct. 6) and Colby Lewis in Game 3 (Saturday, Oct. 8).

Washington said he is considering using Lee on short rest to pitch in Game 4, depending on how the series is going.

"If we think we need him, he could go," Washington said.

If the club decides not to pitch Lee on three days' rest, Tommy Hunter w0uld get the start. Otherwise, Hunter will be in the bullpen.

Washington said he chose Lewis over Hunter as the third starter because of Lewis' experience.

"He's been here since day 1," Washington said. "He's earned that right, not that Tommy hasn't, but we can only go with three at first."

In order to prepare for that rotation, Washington said the club will make sure Lee, Wilson and Lewis get full rest from the end of the regular season and leading into the playoffs. Tentatively, that means Lee would pitch on Thursday and Wilson on Friday. Lewis would probably pitch again next weekend, since he won't be needed until the following weekend.

Washington has plenty of confidence in his rotation.

"Those are the guys that got us to this point and we'll depend on them to take us as far as we can go," Washington said. "They keep you in ballgames and that's what you need."

So, Spy, why do you think Davis is the postseason 1b (from your pregame post)?

spystud13
09-26-2010, 07:32 PM
I think he is for sure if we play NYY, because Cantu will start vs Sabathia & Pettitte, & they would want Davis for late-game D. Rosh's quotes about the game "speeding up" for MM lately lead me to believe they won't exactly trust him in the 8th inning of a 1-run October game in the Bronx.

If we play Tampa, I'm not so sure because they only have Price...

ok armchair managers, here's a question. your team mvp is dealing with a nagging rib injury and may or may not be ready to play come playoff time. if he can play but is not 100%, do you play him and hope for the best? what if he is not ready to play when rosters have to be finalized, but may be ready during the series? put him on the roster? leave him off and hope he'll be ready for ALCS and that you can get there without him?

Show your work.

Duck of Death
09-26-2010, 07:56 PM
also, i think moreland has earned his spot. he does not seem like a terrible defensive 1B, and if we need to we can put cantu there in a late game situation. i'm not sure the AL pitchers know how to get him out consistently yet, and he walks and makes contact. they know how to get davis out, and they know how to strike him out. Davis can hang out in arlington in case moreland, cantu, or young get hurt.

Jeff Francouer (sp?) has been mashing for us ever since we signed him. I have all the confidence in the world in him every time he steps up to bat. I have a feeling hes gonna come up big for us in a pinch hit situation in the post season.

No... Cruz, Murphy, Francoeur are playing well.

what if he is not ready to play when rosters have to be finalized, but may be ready during the series? put him on the roster?

Yes... If there's a chance he could help us at some point, he has to be on the roster. If they determine he can't after Game 1 or 2, then he could be replaced, but he would be ineligible for the remainder of the postseason.

Duck of Death
09-26-2010, 08:24 PM
so you'd rather risk losing him for the LCS and/or WS by playing him in the LDS? if we make it thru the LDS without him, we can add him to the LCS roster(right?). i say if he's not 100% then he should rest and someone else be put on the LDS roster.

Yes, each series' roster is independent of the previous one, so he could be added. I have a bad feeling it won't even be a decision though, because it sure doesn't sound like he's getting close...

Congrats Rangers! Been a long time coming and it feels great! A lot of ups and downs this season, especially the bad start. Then some really bad stretches that had people wondering. But they pulled through as usual and won the West and are now going to the playoffs. Rangers. Playoffs!!

Now let's actually make some noise this postseason unlike the other years.

UTCRP
09-27-2010, 01:08 AM
What a hell of a ride this season has been. Like Vic said, there have been moments this year where you just got that feeling in your stomach that they may crash and burn; but every time that happened they seemed to follow it up with a 3+ game winning streak. This team has been special and I'm looking forward to atleast winning a game in the playoffs. Anything more than that and this season will have been the most memorable Rangers season for me...ever.

pooraggy
09-27-2010, 02:49 AM
Im sure its been talked about in this thread but i dont feel like going through all the pages. Who would you guys perfer to play in the playoffs? A Yankee team with endless postseason experience but a lacking pitching staff, or a Tampa Bay team that knows this is probably the last time they will ever play together (which could be a good or bad thing) with an outstanding pitching staff? Obviously both are tough draws but i'm personally hoping for the Yankees because i feel like the Rays could beat us in more ways than the Yankees could....but that could just be me. What do you guys think?

spystud13
09-27-2010, 03:32 AM
I think the majority of us prefer the Rays, just because we remember the 3 dreadful series in the 90s! Our road record is equally bad at all 3 places this year (including Minn), so it's really negligible at this point.

If Pap Smear didn't fucking choke tonight, Tampa would still be 1.5 up...

it's not important obviously anymore, but i would like to get the 92 wins predicted by nolan. we would need to go 5 and 2 to reach it and we're rolling out the likes of feldman, harden and holland within the next 5 starts, so it'll be tough.

i bought tickets way back in june to the season finale hoping that we would have it clinched by then (because we all know my checkered attendance record). i don't think i'll be able to go to any playoffs (so you can all let go a sigh of relief) but i think i would prefer to watch them at home anyways.

it's september and the rangers are relevant.

Those were teams that counted on the long ball and absolutely no pitching staff. John Burkett was the game 1 starter one of those years i believe (wow). Plus those games we lost in New York were in April and May if i remember correctly, before we ever really got hot in late May and June. Then again, i'd almost rather play NY in a 7 game series and Tampa in a 3 game series. I feel like our pitching staff could match up with NY better in a 7 game series.

Vic Mackey
09-27-2010, 01:00 PM
I prefer the Rays any day of the week. Yankees lineup scares me, especially in the playoffs. We have already seen a 7 run lead is not safe facing them.

And I'm wondering how this week will play out? How much do we rest? How long do our starters play? I don't want too much rest and go in rusty for the 1st round.

just reading some comments on lonestarball makes it make a little more sense. FSSW was deathly afraid of Cuban winning the bid and creating his own regional sports network. The USA Today article says the deal was inked shortly after Greenberg/Ryan won the auction. So FSSW goes to Greenberg/Ryan with this proposed deal to make sure they beat Cuban in the bidding process?

20 years from now...hell 7 years from now (or whenever the NYY deal is up) the yanks will re-sign for $300M+ or whatever the highest current deal is plus 50%. The Yanks will turn their deal over 2 or 3 times before the Rangers 20 year deal is up. $150M 20 years from now may not look too sweet, but no way you turn this down.

I would love to see their projected local population and ratings numbers are for 2030. With the bump that CLee gives the ratings, I am surprised that FSSW does not double the offer that the Rangers throw out there.

John Ourand of the Sports Business Journal on twitter:

Fox Sports says USA Today published "wildly inflated" numbers when it said the RSN signed a $3B/20-year deal with the Texas Rangers

Evan Grant is now saying that it is a 20 year $1.5B deal so closer to $75M a year which seems a little bit more in line. Also FSN might be losing the Astros so that would explain why they would be willing to shell out so much more of the Rangers.

Back at Rangers Ballpark for the first time since winning the AL West, Ron Washington’s starting lineup looks a lot like what he would write down in a pennant race. Six of nine started on Opening Day. It is likely the Rangers will rest regulars at some point. Chris Davis gets the nod at first base.

The lineups:

Rangers (87-68)

SS Elvis Andrus (.265)
3B Michael Young (.284)
LF David Murphy (.290)
DH Vladimir Guerrero (.301)
RF Nelson Cruz (.310)
2B Ian Kinsler (.293)
1B Chris Davis (.198)
C Matt Treanor (.212)
CF Julio Borbon (.282)

P C.J. Wilson (14-7, 3.15)

The fact that he's starting Davis & Treanor tonight may be relevant...

New number's still pretty good. More than double the old one in hard times.

Evan Grant...

Every acquisition the Rangers have made this year has had his moments. Except for Guzman. He has been an unmitigated failure. His biggest contribution could have come Sunday when he would have started in place of one of the other guys who has played more often and who deserved a break more than Guzman. Alas, Guzman, who seemed to have no trouble running around the clubhouse spraying folks with champagne Saturday afternoon, reported that he was a "little stiff" on Sunday. Based on his performance with the Rangers this season (.152 average in 15 games), you might make the argument that he was a "big stiff."

Though the Rangers were looking for extra infielders, the move was, in my opinion, hastily thrown together when Ian Kinsler went to the DL. Nothing wrong with that. The timing of the Kinsler injury was bad. It forced the Rangers to think quickly. I had been advocating a deal for fellow Nat Adam Kennedy or Craig Counsell. Neither has performed particularly well in the second half, but I think they would have made off-the-field contributions. Sorry to be so blunt in my word choice here, but I think Guzman has failed to carry off even the easiest portion of his assignment here: being a good teammate.

What a sorry piece of shit!! Fuck you Guzman, I hope we designate you when we activate Mark Lowe just so you'll be gone that much more quickly! We should have kept Cora over him; at least Cora is legitimately regarded as a good teammate...

there's nothing new to report over hamilton's injury that i can find.

this is the closest thing to being pertinent information and it's from the san francisco chronicle...

Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton is stepping up his baseball activity in an effort to get back in the lineup before the playoffs.

Hamilton took 25 swings off a tee, ran hard in the outfield, and shagged flyballs prior to Monday night's game against the Mariners.

Hamilton, out since Sept. 4 with two fractured ribs in his right side, reported no discomfort after Monday's session.

The AL West-champion Rangers are eager to have Hamilton on their playoff roster. Despite missing 23 straight games, Hamilton still leads the majors with a .361 average and has 31 homers and 97 RBIs.

I'm wondering if he will still win the MVP or if now Maeur is getting it. I still think Josh deserves it but it's whatever now. I'm just focused on the playoffs.

He took 10 off the tee and 40 off soft toss. Hamilton said he was swinging at about 80 percent on the first 30 swings of soft toss and 95 percent on the last five to 10. He looked pleased as he put on his cleats to go run the bases. He has not thrown yet and doesn't have a plan to at this point.

"I feel good," said Hamilton, who wore some light padding for his ribs while working out, and said the protection felt fine. "I didn't have any problems. When I release my top hand at the end of my swing [after contact], I don't feel any pain at all."

ARLINGTON, Texas -- David Murphy was taken out of Wednesday's game with the Mariners in the second inning because of a left groin strain.

Rangers officials said he is still being evaluated, so we don't know how serious the injury may be.

Murphy came out of the game while at first base after reaching on an error. Mitch Moreland pinch ran for him with two outs. Moreland then stayed in to play right field and Jeff Francoeur moved over to left field, a position he's never played in the majors.

Murphy has been a huge reason this team has stayed afloat with Josh Hamilton out of the lineup. He is hitting .355 in September, much of that time with Hamilton out with the rib injury.

We'll let you know more on Murphy as soon as we do.

Are we keeping 2 of the 3 first basemans in Davis, Moreland, and Cantu for the post season? Who should we keep? I think Davis is probably the best defensive 1st baseman in the entire league. Davis strikes out way to god damn much for my liking and in critical situations at the plate I think he'll fold like a lawn chair. Cantu is the veteran and can hit the ball every now and then but obviously his rbi numbers are terrible and seems to only get hits with no one on. Depends on if CD can hit anything. His numbers against series are absolute shit, but if he can remember how to hit right handers, he's a good bat off the bench. I don't trust him though. At least MM has been semi-consistent and can play OF if needed.

And I think the whole 1b defense thing has been highly overrated.

Rangers outfielder David Murphy was scheduled to get an MRI on Wednesday afternoon of his strained left groin to determine its severity.

Manager Ron Washington believes the injury occurred while Murphy was off first base in the second inning and running back and forth on foul balls hit by Bengie Molina. Washington called it just a "freak thing."

"We'll see how it is tomorrow," Washington said.

Murphy has helped carry this team offensively in Josh Hamilton's absence. He is hitting .355 in September and has produced many big hits.

Random notes...

Josh Hamilton was bouncing down the hallway at Rangers Ballpark Thursday, saying he was ready to play and quit talking about his injury.

He's going to have that chance Friday, as he'll start in the outfield with the plan for him to play six innings. He'll play the entire game Saturday as the Rangers designated hitter and start in the field again Sunday, playing the entire game. That should give him around 10 at-bats before the playoffs.

The good news for the Rangers is that David Murphy's groin strain is mild. They don't want to push things with Murphy though, and will rest him the entire series against Los Angeles. They want him to be healthy for the playoffs, and not the regular season.

Manager Ron Washington said Tuesday that the team planned to give the Game 4 ball to Cliff Lee in the American League Division Series. That's changed as of now. The new plan is for Tommy Hunter to start Game 4 in Arlington, and not pitch Lee on three days rest. That can still change though. Hunter is a perfect 7-0 at Rangers Ballpark this year.

Hunter will start Friday's game against the Angels.

Two things...

Chris Davis was unable to play Friday because of the flu bug that's been going around the team and it's beginning to look obvious that Mitch Moreland is going to be the Rangers' left-handed-hitting first baseman in the playoffs.

The Rangers wanted to get a good look at Davis this week, but he is hitless in his last 11 at-bats and is now unable to play. The Rangers still hope he can get back in the lineup this weekend.

"I want to see him, but I can't because he's sick," manager Ron Washington said.

Davis is considered the superior defensive player. But the Rangers like what they see defensively from Jorge Cantu, who will be on the roster as the right-handed-hitting first baseman. If Moreland is the starter at first, Cantu could replace him defensively in the late innings during the playoffs.

Rangers manager Ron Washington has decided that Bengie Molina will catch Game 1 of the upcoming American League Division Series and Matt Treanor will catch Game 2. Molina will be behind the plate with Cliff Lee on the mound and Treanor will catch C.J. Wilson in Game 2.

"That's about the extent of it," Washington said. "We'll see how the next ones go after that. I'm going to try and keep them both engaged. I'm not going to stop what I have been doing all year.

"In Game 3, we'll see where we go. There is a possibility that Game 3 will be Molina."

Washington said he does want to have Treanor behind the plate when Wilson is on the mound.

"Treanor gets down in the dirt a little better and C.J. throws a lot of dirt balls," Washington said.

He had a coke problem and lost his medical license quite a while back. That's why he was Dr. Brown (retired) in the Dady's Baby Girl ads. He's recently been arrested again for domestic violence which is why the new ads focus on the clinic and procedure and don't have him in it.

So Tampa it is. Cliff Lee vs David Price in game one. Does that mean Cantu starts at 1B or has Moreland played well enough down the stretch to lock up 1st. And does Josh play in center with Murphy (never heard the severity of his injury but im assuming hes fine) in left or does Josh play left with Borbon in center? And just like you guys said, this couldnt come at a better time. The horns are in a rebuilding year and Im about to fall to 0-4 in my fantasy league and im the two time defending champ. If the cowbos shit the bed this will be a rough football season

Fucking whiny bitches...

The regular-season finale was delayed in the top of the sixth inning Sunday as manager Ron Washington pulled Rangers regulars one-by-one so that they could receive a warm ovation from the fans. Washington did a similar thing before Vladimir Guerrero batted in the bottom of the inning.

Angels right-hander Dan Haren responded by throwing behind pinch-hitter Matt Treanor. Angels who were asked afterward said that they had never seen anything quite like that Washington did to recognize the players. Torii Hunter didn't like the moves, which in no way were intended to show up the vanquished Angels. But, apparently, some felt slighted.

Said Hunter: "What can you do? You can't do anything about it. What are you going to do, cry? It doesn't matter if I liked it or not. It doesn't matter if they try to rub it in our face or not, it's their stadium, they can do whatever the hell they want. I'd never do that. But they won it, they're the champs. We're going home, going fishing, I guess."

Said Haren: "It was a little weird. I don't know the history. If we'd done something like that, then it was fine to do. It was a little out of the ordinary. I felt bad for their pitcher. He had to stand around out there for five minutes."

Also:

The Rangers depart for St. Petersburg on Monday morning and will work out later in the day. They will also work out Tuesday afternoon in advance of their first playoff series since 1999. Thirty-one players will go with them, including right-hander Frank Francisco. He will throw a bullpen session Tuesday but is not considered a candidate for the playoff roster. The Rangers are toying with the idea of using a 10-man pitching staff (six relievers) and 15 position players.

No game times have been determined, but the Rangers are anticipating that they will play day games.

Mark Lowe and Matt Harrison will be shipped to Arizona to continue working out, and they will join the team for Game 3 at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. They're not on the first-round 25-man roster. Neither are infielder Cristian Guzman and right-handers Rich Harden, Pedro Strop and Doug Mathis. They were informed that they will not be participating in the postseason.

Fucking Harden doesn't even get to chill in the dugout!
