Wonder if Spencer E. Ante of the WSJ knows what "goatse" means.

AT&T Discloses Breach of iPad Owner Data

By SPENCER E. ANTE (http://online.wsj.com/search/term.html?KEYWORDS=SPENCER+E.+ANTE&bylinesearch=true)

AT&T (http://online.wsj.com/public/quotes/main.html?type=djn&symbol=t) Inc. acknowledged Wednesday that a security hole in its website had exposed its iPad customers' email addresses, a breach that highlights how corporations still have problems protecting private information.

A small group of computer experts that calls itself Goatse Security claimed responsibility for the intrusion, saying the group had exploited an opening in AT&T's website to find numbers that identify iPads connected to AT&T's mobile network.

Those numbers allowed the group to uncover 114,000 email addresses of thousands of iPad customers, including prominent officials in companies, politics and the military, the group said. Gawker Media LLC reported the breach Wednesday. It doesn't appear any financial or billing information was made public.http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704575304575297210807737710.html?K EYWORDS=ipad

If this was HF, all of you would've been banned (including me) for posting on this thread!

There was a thread where someone mentioned goatse. I warned people NOT to google it because they would be scarred for life. LHG temp-banned me for "encouraging" people to look it up. WTF. When did "Don't do ____" come to mean "C'mon you pussy! Do it! DOOOOO IIIIITTTTTTTT!!!

There's probably some law on the books that makes their act illegal. But AT&T probably won't pursue them because it was an AT&T screwup.

Goatse didn't "break-in" in the traditional style. Instead it was like a guy put a box on the sidewalk with a sign that said "Free money in the box. One dollar per person only" and then went home. Goatse went to the box and took all the money. So while Goatse morally shouldn't have taken all the money, a lot of people would say the fault rests on the guy putting all the money in the box and then leaving it unguarded.

AT&T was hoping they wouldn't get their hands on it.

You just can't leave your box unguarded with Goatse around... they'll get their hands in there.

That seems like a pretty gaping hole, if you ask me.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation said Thursday that it was investigating a security breach on AT&T’s Web site that allowed a security group to obtain the e-mail addresses of 114,000 iPad 3G owners.

The group also obtained the identification numbers known as ICC-IDs that those iPads use to communicate over AT&T’s network.

“The F.B.I. is aware of these possible computer intrusions and has opened an investigation to address the potential cyberthreat,” said Jason Pack, a supervisory special agent with the F.B.I.’s news media office.

The iPad owners who were affected included some prominent corporate executives and senior officials from several government agencies including the Justice Department, the Department of Homeland Security and the White House.

Remember - if you are going to publish ill-gotten information, don't include the email of the government officials.
