weird how 2 members of the 1986 Celtics are coaching Texas NBA teams. All we need is Larry Bird to replace Pops (retirement) and the triangle is complete.
weird how 2 members of the 1986 Celtics are coaching Texas NBA teams. All we need is Larry Bird to replace Pops (retirement) and the triangle is complete.
I wrote out a long post responding to this, but I lost it. No matter how you slice it, this is an avg. team competing for a 6, 7 or 8 seed and they don't play well against the teams they're fighting against for those seed. They can't play defense and they turn the ball over a lot. Right now they are equal to their expected wins and if they make the playoffs, they're a first round exit. that pau trade was a gamble, but it's time morey went out and got a young all-star, which has been his plan all along and the reason he's been hoarding a lot of young players with up-side. this team is playing better than last year, but they won't win more than one playoff game with this roster, let alone a series.
oh yeah and the "defense" the grizz & rockets played in the 4th was really just two teams exhausted because of lockout ball.
I agree with a lot of this.
This is my 2 cents though. We aren't gonna keep any big time players here unless we trade for someone who already is locked into a contract so we are either gonna stay how we have been the last 5 years or so and be average, or it is time to trade off people and try and land a rent of player (like Dwight Howard) for the next two months and make a legit run at this. Then he walks at the end of the year and instead of us being mediocre we suck and get high draft picks for a season or two to rebuild. Staying in this middle ground is doing nothing for us.
Could this team pull off a first rd upset(assuming they make the playoffs), most likely, but could they do any more than that.....prob not.
I must say the clapping advice helped, Thanks to all
The way the team is playing, there's no need to tank right now. I want to keep winning. We're far closer to the fourth spot than last.
Win tonight would go a long way. And the 6(?) days of rest.
Another great win with a record of 20-14 heading to the All-Star break. Incredible.
How in the $#@! did Scola end up with 19/10? he looked like he was hooping in mud... i was set to kill him, then i look at the box and then "WTF-GTFO?!"
Lowry is balling... his line was fairly average, but he was busting ass.
Something of note from Yahoo Power RankingsWhat's that all about?A stat: The Rockets' two most-used lineups (with no common players) have allowed 92.9 points per 100 possesions. All other lineups have allowed 102.7.
A question: Can Kevin Martin get back to playing consistently?
A prediction: The Rockets make the playoffs for the first time since Yao Ming's last full season, which means they lose their first-round pick in a great draft.
I think the Rockets pick is owed to the Nets this season but it is lottery protected.
It's the Knicks, and it's top 5 protected.
Sorry, I can't read. You're right though. The Nets get Houston's pick unless it's in the lottery.
Last edited by CBT; 02-28-2012 at 11:52 AM. Reason: Terrance Williams trade.
yeah so if lowry keeps up the pace of the last three games and we make a good trade at the deadline, we could definitely be looking at a 4 or 5 seed. plus we've got a pretty easy schedule, it think we play 15 or 16 teams under .500 after the break.
Another great win. Now let's go win in Utah. $#@! the Jazz.
Unreal that we have a 21-14 record right now. The team is not that good but we find ways to win ugly.
18-7 in the last 25.
would be nice to go 2-1 over the next 3 (@ utah, back home for denver and the clippers) before heading on the road for a 5 game trip (although with a slate that should result in 3-2 at the worst, and hopefully 4-1 or better).
I'll say it now...the Lakers would want no part of this Houston team in round 1. We've got bigs who could neutralize their front court now and our back court is better than theirs. Plus, McHale would coach circles around that piece of dog crap coach Mike Brown.
I'll be interested to see what happens when the Rockets play the Mavs.
Hmm...I gotta disagree with you, Bo. We have no answer for Bynum and Gasol in a 7 game series. Dalembert is our only real defensive presence in the paint and he's been solid, but he won't completely shut down either guy. We really miss Chuck Hayes as a low post defender as he's arguably one of the most underrated in that regard in the NBA.
Currently we are a team built for the regular season and we've been fortunate to not have many injuries(crossing fingers). Come playoff time the defensive intensity picks up and that's when we'll struggle. Kevin Martin and Scola are finesse players that will be neutralized in the playoffs. We play hard almost every night and our record proves it, but IMO the talent just isn't there right now.
I will obviously be excited to make the postseason and I hope the team proves me wrong.
Patterson, Scola, Budinger, Dalembert isn't a bad front line. I don't think it's great but we have enough bigs to match up with L.A. now. Bynum is Mr. Glass and if Scola is a finesse player so is Gasol.
And Lowry would murder Derek Fisher, all game long. I like Fish but he's about at the end of his rope.
I think it'd be a 7 game series, much like the series we had a few years back when we took them to 7 on their way to their last ring. If we could make it an up n down game, I think our athleticism and depth would neutralize their advantage in the front court. They'd kill us if they got us into a half court match-up though.
Anyone hear of any Rockets' trade rumors swirling around as the trade deadline approaches?
As I said earlier, I think a big difference would be Mike Brown, who I think compared to Phil Jackson is a piece of crap head coach. Phil had a knack for taking mediocre talent aside from one or two great players and making those teams into playoff ready teams. This Lakers team much like this Rockets team is built for the regular season, not the playoffs and I don't think Mike Brown can mold this team into a playoff team.
Have not heard any trade rumors. I doubt the Rockets will be active at the deadline.
I heard on the radio today that the Rockets t.v. ratings are down 40% from last year. Thats the worst decrease in the nba this year and it's especially surprising because the average nba t.v. ratings are up from last year. Add in the fact that attendance has been low this year as well in a year where the Rockets are 21 - 14 going into March and tied with the Mavs for the 4th seed in the playoffs it just doesn't make any sense. The only thing I can think of is the lockout turned some people off from the nba and the Rockets attempted to trade some of the fan favorite players before the season but the deal fell through. I know a lot of people want a superstar player but if you ask me we got one in Kyle Lowry. Whatever the problem is it needs to get fixed soon because this is an embarrassment to the city of Houston as a sports town.
Houston rated the #6 most miserable city by Forbes:
http://blog.chron.com/sportsupdate/2...sports-cities/
Houston has a 4-4 record in the championship round, a 5-8 record in the semifinal round and four titles in 137 total seasons.
“A history full of solid teams coming up short in the end: from 1978 through the 2005 Oilers and Astros combined for 19 playoff appearances but no bananas.”
what the $#@! was that tonight? got blown the $#@! out by utah.
I've been thinking about this, and attribute it to several things:
1. Houston is a football town. The Texans did well. Aggy is moving to the SEC. The Longhorns are recruiting. UH is moving to Big East.
2. The compressed season. I do not have the time or desire to try to watch 4 Rockets games in one week. Hell, I do good to catch a part of 1 game. So, if you assume the regular watchers would watch 1 or 2 games a week, and then there are 4 games, there's 50% of the games not being watched.
3. No superstar... If Ron Artest were still on the team, he'd be the most recognizable player and one of the better players... on the Lakers, they say he needs to be off the team. Being a scrappy team works great in some places. If these Rockets were in Indianapolis, they're ratings would be up, not down 40%.
4. The Rockets don't advertise for $#@!.... I don't know $#@! about them without TRYING to know about them. They forgot what got them big ratings... I bet their ad spend is way down... because...
5. No more Yao Ming... even when he wasn't playing, the Rockets were riding the Yao Ming train... they promo'd Yao... they promo'd Yao's injuries, marriage, restaurant... Now, nothing but an occasional, "please come to the game... we'll give you a ticket, a beer, and hotdog for $45!" Personally, I think the front office got lazy when it came to continuing to build the brand. They had a billion Chinese in T-Mac jerseys a couple years ago. Now, China is a New York Knick. Should have seen it coming.
6. Daryl Morrey - People are tired of an average basketball team... All of the trade magic and witchery has been for nothing. You have the team you put together, using your stats... and it's working for what you have. However, moneyball doesn't work in the NBA. It works in baseball because there are twice as many players and the difference between success and failure isn't as great (1/4 or .250 is $#@!ty, but 1/3 or .333 is awesome.) However, 'efficiency' in basketball gives you a scrappy team that's an under dog. You have to have a guy (if not two) who can, on any night, play "off the charts". Morrey's problem, imo, is that he is going to have to "lose" on a trade to get a superstar... otherwise, he just has 'assets'... they're only assets if they help you get better.
7. The team looks different. The scrappy vets that the fans got close to are gone. Lowry and Scola have been around. Martin is a transplant from last year. Budinger is a 2nd or 3rd year. Dalembert is new and Parsons is new. McHale is new.
A perfect storm of "meh" hit the Rockets this year. Hopefully, they are properly motivated going forward.
Comcast Sports New England is reporting the Rockets are interested in Paul Pierce.
Not sure how good that source is but they are reporting it

don't want pierce for a few reasons:
1. of the "big 3," he is the one that should forever remain a celtic.
2. he isn't the player he was even 3 years ago, let alone 5-6 years ago.
3. he has 3 years left on his contract.
if they want to trade for one of those guys, i'd rather them go for garnett or allen as they both only have another year on their contracts. garnett would actually add a solid defensive presence that the rockets desperately need.
if the celtics are serious about trading rondo, the rockets should try and work out a 3 way deal that sends scola and martin to boston, rondo to the lakers and pau gasol to houston (basically the chris paul trade, but with rondo taking paul's spot).
Damn, another close loss. We haven't won since the All-Star break if I'm not mistaken. Those guys need to get it together before they fall out of the top 8
$#@! it we need another big so bad. patrick patterson step it up. we don't need two finesse players at PF, you gotta play bigger son.
I'm sick of having Kevin Martin on my team. Can't wait til he's gone.
I find this hard to believe.
Sheeeit... Paul Pierce can still ball. I think he should be a Celtic for life, but that's just me thinking. He's better than anyone Houston has right now - and he would be the best player Houston has had since Dream... (Yes, better than Yao and T-Mac, because they couldn't stay on the court.)
Because he can't defend?
I feel similarly about Scola. Scola would be just fine if the Rockets had somebody... anybody... who could play either of the big spots on both ends. Scola is too un-athletic... 40,000 pump fakes like an old man.
Morey made a big trade before the season but Stern vetoed and $#@!ed our organization. I'll keep on spouting this same line every time Hoosier questions why our GM doesn't make more moves. Morey was getting rid of Martin and Scola, but since the commissioner butted in Hoosier can pretend that our GM is content with our current roster.
He tried to get Marc Gasol but Memphis matched...not too many other teams(if any) tried to sign a guy that is an All-Star level player. He went after Bosh. He went after Nene. He went after Gortat. I'm sure there are people that think Minnesota has a better front office than Houston because of their roster, even though the talent is only in Minny because they've had lottery draft picks since the beginning of time.
Kevin Martin can't defend and is one of the biggest pussies physically and mentally in the NBA. I'm sick of his flopping and he automatically gets shut down by any decent perimeter defender. Half of the fouls he draws wouldn't be called in the playoffs. Scola is an entertaining player but doesn't rebound/play defense well enough for us at the PF spot.
My point isn't that Morey isn't trying. Hell, I try, too. When I don't succeed, I get reminded that I need to $#@!ing succeed.
Morey gets A LOT of credit for trying. And, yeah, he's been dealt a $#@!ty hand more than once (Yao and Tracy going down, and Stern's trade veto.)
Fair enough, Hoosier. Unfortunately there have been too many obstacles in the way for the Rockets to make considerable roster changes. Morey seems to be much more active than other GMs. He has little to show for it, but it's not like any other franchise has been able to get lots of deals done over the last couple of years.
That's just it. He does lots of deals on the fringe. He's active. The Rockets don't need lots of deals. The Rockets don't need a bunch of lottery protected draft picks and 2nd steals. A few of those are needed to round out a team... but the Rockets are THAT team...
What has been Morey's best move? Here's the list:
