I have squirreled away this idea for the time being, because it's no secret that the trolls from Penn State are too upset about this to think with an unclouded mind.

They think this is a shameful idea. I'll tell you what is shameful. The conspiracy undertaken by the staff and administrators of The Pennsylvania State University to cover up the rape of children so as not to damage its precious football program is shameful. The record is clear on this count. For a decade, Penn State employees, agents, trustees, and officers--from the janitor to the president of the university all the way up to the Lord High Football Coach--knew that Jerry Sandusky was raping children, and doing so on Penn State property. And the only remedial action they took is to ask him nicely to do it elsewhere.

Do you know what else is shameful? A mass protest in defense of one of the primary conspirators, the Lord High Football Coach himself, when the scope of the cover-up began to be revealed. Joe Paterno not only knew of the rapes and did nothing to prevent further molestation, the evidence indicates that he actively minimized and downplayed the seriousness of the situation. Paterno's action and inaction facilitated the rape of countless additional victims over the subsequent decade (though through litigation I suspect we'll begin to get a count). And yet Penn State's students and fans rallied in support of his continuing to coach the football team.

But that's not really all Joe Paterno did, is it? And that brings me perhaps to the most shameful aspect of this entire imbroglio. Joe Paterno wasn't just the football coach. He wasn't just the highest authority at the school, though he definitely was that as evidenced by the trustees' inability to fire him in 2004. He was apparently the highest moral authority in Central Pennsylvania. You want to know shameful? Calibrating your moral compass to the actions of a football coach is shameful. And yet that's what happened at The Pennsylvania State University--the near deification of a lousy football coach.

Yes, let's all reflect on shame, shall we. Let's let Pedobear provoke people into considering that for which we should be ashamed.

I submit that if you continue to be a supporter of the football program of The Pennsylvania State University, that list is very long.

When the crap hit the fan, and JoePa was finally held accountable, did the students and alumni of PSU see the error of their ways, or acknowledge their responsibility in creating the cult of personality that allowed these nightmarish, unspeakable crimes to occur for YEARS? Nope. They rioted in the streets. Even today, they say "think about all the young men whose lives JoePa molded!" Sorry -- I can't get past the dozens of lives he allowed to be destroyed. Neither can any other person with a sense of reason and an even partially functioning moral compass.

Sandusky raped kids. JoePa let him. And JoePa was powerful enough to do so because the students and alumni of PSU GAVE him that power.

THAT'S why we get such pushback from the PSU faithful. THAT'S why they disingenuously only now want to say "we should focus on the victims!" They do that because they don't want ANY discussion of where a huge hunk of blame lies -- on the people who created the culture that made this pattern of inhuman crimes inevitable: THE STUDENTS AND ALUMNI OF PENN STATE.

They should do less bitching about the person who will wear a pedobear costume, and more self-reflection of how they created and enabled an ACTUAL pedophile. But they won't. They have to have someone else to grouse about. They have to distract, and say "we should focus on the victims, and not anything else." Because to do otherwise would require them to acknowledge a truth so ugly that they just can't handle it:

It's a simple calculus. Penn State spent decades ceding power and authority to its football program and its football program's emperor, JoPa. As misguided and retarded as that may be for an allegedly quality university, we at UT should not be the ones to cast the first stone for overemphasizing football. So fine.

But after decades, the school and its power strucure were tested, and all failed in spectacular fashion. There was about the worst crime you could assign to a coach - underage forcible rape and sodomy. And JoPa knew, and JoPa's administrators knew, and some of the campus police knew, and they all did a collective nothing but look the other way. And the rapes continued in JoPa's locker room for years. Years. Rapes. Children.

Action taken = nothing.

McQueary's testimony today is absolutely devastating to Paterno. Paterno initially tells McQueary that if the purpose of his call is about a job, then he'll cut the conversation short because he doesn't have one.

McQueary then tells Paterno the real reason for his call--that he saw Sandusky raping a kid. Paterno's reaction is "I'm sorry you had to see that." And then shortly thereafter, when McQueary doesn't report it to the police, somehow there's magically a job available for him.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) -- About two dozen fans gathered briefly outside Joe Paterno's home Wednesday night to wish the former Penn State coach a happy 85th birthday and sing a Christmas carol.

Paterno's son, quarterback coach Jay Paterno, thanked the crowd on behalf of his father. He said that because of chemotherapy Paterno was a little weak so he couldn't come outside.

Joe Paterno has been diagnosed with what his family has called a treatable form of lung cancer.

"Happy birthday JoePa, Happy Birthday JoePa ... and many more," the fans serenaded several times to the tune of the traditional birthday song during their seven-minute visit. Most of the gathering, which included a few children, stayed on the sidewalk and just off the Paternos' property, about 30 feet from the front door.

Wearing rain slickers or hooded jackets, most fans gathered at a statue dedicated to Paterno outside Beaver Stadium and made the roughly 15-minute walk to Paterno's modest ranch home near the end of a dead-end street. The property is decorated with bright Christmas lights.

Fans said they began planning the visit about two weeks ago. They also delivered cards as part of a drive from a Penn State alumni group in Baltimore to send Paterno 109,000 birthday cards -- a number nearly identical to the capacity of Beaver Stadium.

Jay Paterno said he didn't know how many cards the family received, but joked they would have to weigh all of them.

"It was just to wish him a happy 85th birthday, have fun, show him our support and tell him we still love him," Sue Lelko, of Port Matilda, decked out in blue Penn State sweats, said about the trip to wish Paterno well.

Fans broke out into a chorus of "We Wish You a Merry Christmas after Paterno's wife, Sue Paterno, also came out briefly while trying to get grandchildren running in the yard to return home.

"Thank you very much and have a Merry Christmas," she said.

School trustees fired Paterno last month in the aftermath of child sex-abuse charges against retired defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky.

Paterno testified before a grand jury investigating Sandusky about a 2002 allegation reported by a graduate assistant that Paterno then relayed to a superior, but prosecutors have said he is not a target of the probe. Sandusky is awaiting trial after pleading not guilty.

Paterno has called the allegations troubling and urged the public to let the legal process unfold. He initially announced his retirement Nov. 9, taking effect at the end of the season. That day, he called the scandal "one of the great sorrows of my life. With the benefit of hindsight, I wish I had done more." The trustees fired him about 12 hours later.

On Wednesday, a prominent Penn State donor, Anthony Lubrano, released a letter critical of the way Penn State leaders handled the initial week of the crisis.

Lubrano is a 1982 graduate whose name is on a state-of-the art baseball park that opened on campus in 2006. He said the letter was sent to fellow alumni.

In the letter with the subject heading of "Due Process," Lubrano said "In America, the presumption of innocence is a fundamental right. However, on the night of November 9th, a rush to judgment appeared to have occurred."

He wrote that others "outraged by the failure of the leadership of Penn State to allow for due process" sign a separate online petition. The petition contained nearly identical wording to an online letter of support signed by nearly 450 of Paterno's former players, including Heisman Trophy winner John Cappalletti, LaVar Arrington and current Raiders offensive lineman Stefen Wisniewski.

Lubrano said he coordinated with letter organizers after the former players released their statement of support Tuesday night.

"It's about celebrating Joe's birthday today. We just want to wish him well with his recovery and everything," one of the organizers, Hall of Famer and Nittany Lions standout tailback Lydell Mitchell, said Wednesday. "He's going through a stressful time right now."
