I love this team. When they are running on all cylinders it is a thing of beauty. There is no superstar, just men doing work. Yadi has been my favorite for a while who might be breaking into my favorites "of all time" list. Hope puma makes it back, but if not I'm glad he got a ring last year
Yeah I was a bit premature on Berkman. Apparently no "obvious" torn ACL but they really won't know until surgery Friday.
Here's hoping it's a winner for him. Loved the guy all his years, was thrilled he got to jump to a WS winner and get his ring. Now I just want him to go out on top, not retire like this. Hoping for the best.
Cardinals ALWAYS, ALWAYS swoon some time between late May and late June. Right on schedule. Not too far off from last year, when they came out hot, pretty much $#@! the bricks by the all-star game, then started looking like the '27 Yanks on steroids for the last 2 months.
Pitching is there, just need to get a few guys healthy. No one else in the NL is lights out (Dodgers and Nats are fur real), so anything goes.
Cincinnati says hi. Won 21 of last 32. Only NL team with better record in that stretch is L.A.
Fun game tonight... look forward to the rest of this series...
Lee v Lohse should be good in addition to Halladay vs Wainwright
I will admit though, it is nice knowing we only have to compete with one team every year.
Yup, I said it. Still stand by it. Reds have been playing well but no one is playing lights out. Maybe they've been hot lately, but overall meh.
Do you think the Reds stand out in the NL right now? Good for you.
The Reds have played well but even with their record the last month aren't a lock to play .590 ball this year. Who is besides possibly the Dodgers? No one.
Come into the Cards thread and be prepared to get $#@! pushed in if you try to pimp the Reds. Sure they're playing well but sorry, no one who's writing about baseball right now sees the Reds as anything but playing well lately. Not lights out the best NL team. You won't find it except maybe in the Enquirer columns.

Berkman's surgery done. Sounds like as good news as the Cardinals could have hoped.
B.J. Rains @BJRains
Matheny on Berkman: "As good of news as we could have got from this. ... The conversation was, 'I'm going to be back.'"
B.J. Rains @BJRains
More Matheny on Berkman: "The report I got was the ACL was fine. .... It was great to hear his voice and hear that excitement."
I'm pretty sure he said "I'm going to be black", which is confusing.
$#@! the gay Reds.
Their run differential of +11 means they've been getting lucky as much as the Cardinals have been unlucky with their +69 run differential.
The Reds have won 11 one-run and extra-inning games - 40% of their total wins. That's a big reason why they are playing .563 baseball when their run differential suggests they should be playing just barely above .500 baseball.
(Incidentally, the Dodgers are even higher, having one-run and extra-inning games make up a ridiculous 47% of their total wins.)
Meanwhile, the Cards have been incredibly unlucky in those games... they've only won 4, or 15% of their wins. That's an incredibly low number for a good team like the Cardinals.
Most playoff teams will end up with about 35-38% of their wins over the season coming from one-run and extra inning games. That's a big reason why we're playing well below our expected win percentage of around .650... and also a big reason why I expect the Cards to pick up a lot of games over the next few months.
Jesus Christ... can we please not play the Braves for the rest of the year? What are we, 1-6 against them?
$#@!ing god damn it $#@!.
Thankfully it's a long season... and it's turning into a looonnnggg season.
Umm yeah, I'd like to know what is going on here. Bats are ice cold lately.
Thank god we pulled out a win, i had forgotten what that was like.
Fear not though, we had an 8 game losing streak last summer and we all know how the season ended.
Bud $#@!ing Norris tonight. Cue the automatic loss...
Let's put on our rally cap, guys! It's been a $#@!ty 5 weeks of baseball.
It turns around starting tonight!!!!!!!
I have tickets to the game next Saturday at The K. These $#@!ers are starting to make me not want to go... At least i can get drunk and remind Royals fans that they are fans of the Royals.
12 K, 3 hits, 1 walk 10 wins. Lance Mother$#@! Lynn!
Nice to get out of a Westbrook start with a win. Good thing we get the pathetic Royals at home for three games. Anything less than a sweep in unacceptable.
Haven't been around here for awhile... travelling plus well they sucked, who wants to write about that?
However, silver linings:
1) Almost identical so far to last year... hot start, plethora of injuries, got within 2 games of .500, then slowly righted ship until late July when they won at a .750 clip. No reason it can't happen again, even to a lesser degree.
2) TONS of injuries, obviously. Again, like last year. Can't help but hurt after a certain number. But things looking up... pitching has still been better than last year during their "implosion" stretch... keeping them afloat. Jay is about to return at almost 100%. Matt Carpenter now in rehab minor league games, should be back within the week... after All-Star break, Berkman should be near return, even Carp had his first good throws this week, might return late July.
There's enough pitching to keep them competitive until the big dogs get back. Not saying this is going to be another "late year on fire" thing, but no one in the NLCentral is going to run away with it.
No delusions here... beating Washington, Atlanta, or LA is going to be probably a no-do... but Cards can make it a race. They've managed to hang on with all this adversity.
And if not, well, $#@! THE WORLD, WE GOT THE RING!!!! Heh heh...
Let's sweep Krummy City and get it back on track.
Even with the injuries the team is still hitting pretty well.
With Garcia on the DL and Westbrook reverting back to his normal $#@!ty form (yesterday notwithstanding), I'm hoping that Mo is shopping for some starting pitching right about now.
I would love to get Dempster from the suck-ass Cubs.
Well, it's official. We suck now. <sigh>
Holding out hope to right the ship but cracks turning into ditches. Injuries partly to blame but quickly learning to "unwin".
That 2011 ring is looking nicer and nicer...
Yeah this season is slowly becoming a dumpster fire.
Oh well. It could be worse.
We could be Cub fans.
I'm going to the game at Kauffman Stadium on Saturday, Wainwright is on the mound and the Cards are 8-0 in games where i am in the stands.
SI still has them top 5 in the power rankings.
I no like .500 ball.
Our expected W/L should be 40-29, which would give us the second best record in the NL after the Dodgers. The problem is we've been just AWFUL in 1-run and extra inning games. A combined 7-15.
Part of that is bullpen problems, but you've gotta think some of this is just bad luck that will even out at some point.
Hey -- look at that... another day, another $#@!ing 1-run, extra-inning loss.
Horray. Now 6-12 in one-run games and 1-5 in extra-inning games.
Seriously. This is getting $#@!ing ridiculous.
11-3 over the Roy-Holes. 'bout time.
All I can say is that if they don't win THIS KC series, I'm gonna start talking nasty $#@! about them in here the rest of the year. No way they should have $#@!choked the previous one. Holy $#@!, you'd better freaking win this one.
Tailgating at the K right now. Don't worry folks. We got this
Ps. Mizzou fans are $#@!ets. Sec chant at an MLB game?
That's better. 30 runs on 46 hits in the 3 games. Complete Royals ass$#@!. As it should be.
Not saying we should roll with the Pennant or anything. But there's a point you can't go under.
Injury returners are making a huge difference. Berkman looms on the horizon and... wait for it... Carpenter (the pitcher) might be activated mid-July.
This year is eerily VERY similar to last. Very.
4 in a row with a come-from-behind, 1-run extra-innings victory. Progress!
Five game winning streak. Good to smoke Zambrano as well. Great to see we are hitting again and the pitching is coming around!
Confidence level is stratospheric compared to last 2 weeks. I'm beginning to see unicorns again.
Bunch of poozees on the Reds. I am growing in my hatred for them over the last few years.
You know what, if you don't want ot be left off the roster, make the playoffs and win enough games for your Skipper to have the option to choose. If not, STHU!
Carp done for the season. I was hoping for one more good run with him, but at 37 I feel as though his run could be over.
Hell of a competitor.
Team is hitting right now like Carp's pitching right now. You $#@!ing can't lose - at home - to the Rockies.
i'm not following the carpenter injury, so i've come to the people that i would think are. someone posted on the rangers thread that he's done for the year with elbow surgery. could it be related to last year's post season when he supposedly pitched with elbow soreness or something along those lines?
I was in St. Louis Sunday and Monday, tried to get down to Busch Monday night but some big storms blew through and slowed us down. Missed a good one.
Here is a good article covering this injury and its history, and how after several physical therapies for it, this year it just hasn't responded well. PT is the first choice of his doctors (and most doctors), so he's apparently done the right thing all along. This time it looks like the risky surgery, which doesn't guarantee a full return, is the only hope to save his career.
This seems to resemble Peyton Manning's condition a lot.
