Swoopes isn't coming to Texas solely to take three- and five-step dropbacks. He's coming to develop his uncommon brand of versatility, one that's extremely coveted under center. "I'll run a pro-style offense if they really need me to, but I'd definitely be much more comfortable in a spread attack, a shotgun formation," Swoopes said. "I'd like to run zone-reads, options, rollouts."

With second-year co-offensive coordinator Bryan Harsin at the helm, the Longhorns seem more receptive to that type mindset. The "Wild" formation became a staple of Harsin's offense last season, and the former Boise State coordinator seems to have rubbed off on Brown. "We want quarterbacks who can be great at something," Brown said recently. "The great thing about the offense is it can feature whatever the quarterback does best."
I expect us to be a lot more multiple this year. A fully developed Harsin offense is going to range all over the place. We could wind up running 3TE sets and 4 wide on back to back plays. We're going to do that sometimes without changing personel too. We're going to be doing $#@! all over the field to create mismatches with Ash at QB. When he's ready, we'll definitely take advantage of Swoopes' ability to create in space by utilizing spread sets.

I am excited to see how he does, but it's unfair to compare anyone to Football Jesus. His senior year tape was staggering, and he went 14-1 in 5A. Then he made everyone at the US Army All-American Bowl look like a bunch of $#@!s when it was the only significant all star game. However, the VY comparisons will be as numerous as the McCoy-Shipley did-you-know-their-dads-were-college-roommates stories.

Interesting how little the national media understands how Harsin uses mobile/running QBs in his offense and Harsin's desire to put as many pressures/stresses on the D as possible. We've never seen what Harsin would do with a Pryor/Tebow/Cam/VY as he never had one at BSU.

It will be interesting to see how/if Overstreet is utilized in the coming year, although you would figure that he should be behind Connor Brewer who is going through spring practice with the team. Overstreet, however, has a lot more work to do on his passing game than Swoopes does at this point, IMO.

How is it interesting that they don't understand when you admit that we've never seen what he can do with a mobile QB?

I'd say he can throw accurately, but the way he throws is very poor.
    http://youtu.be/zPVNfrODPys

He doesn't step into his throws at all so he has almost NO velocity on his throws whatsoever and relies on a very short pitch like motion that got receiver #1 waylaid on post routes three times in these highlights alone where the receiver had to wait for the ball to flutter into his hands. Same issue with his long ball: Short stride into his throw, rainbow trajectory, quick enough delivery, but no velocity on his throw. He will get a receiver killed in the college game if Harsin and Applewhite don't quickly change his mechanics. There are several complete Tatum games posted on YouTube wherein Overstreet looks much worse trying to throw the ball and quite frankly, not looking very elusive when they play isn't a designed QB draw or spread option.

In the -cat, he'd be a better runner than Ash but after a few games, good D's will probably stack the line with him in the game knowing his passing isn't going to be a serious threat (at least short term). Again, hopefully Harsin and Applewhite have at least talked with the young man about his mechanics. If not, the better part of his fall practice will be spent on just correcting his mechanics instead of absorbing the plays he needs to learn.

For the -cat, a stand out running threat like Fozzy was is likely to be just as effective as it was last year so my vote goes to Gray being the -cat QB or in the package with Malcolm or Hills as the QB.

We have seen it. He used running QBs as a change of pace even with Kellen Moore. The Ash role at the beginning of last season type stuff. That national media is pigeon holing him and the kind of QB he wants based on the starting QBs he had at BSU and ignore or are don't even know about his use of running QBs. I'm saying no one really knows what Harsin would do with an elite dual threat QB as he's never had one.

    lolWut?

Harsin has never used a mobile qb in a significant capacity in his offense. Maybe once or twice a game as a change of pace isn't the same as having a true mobile qb as your starter. So for the national media to "pigeon hole" him is completely understandable... Because its what he does.

I see what your saying about him throwing off his back foot in the video and he does it a lot. However, thats a pretty simple fix that should be gone within a couple of weeks of strong QB coaching. His touch on the ball, however, is phenomenal. He knows just how much to put on it depending on the play at hand and thats really hard to teach and get down pat. His elusiveness is on display pretty regularly in the vid so I'm not concerned with escapability as he seems to have a good feel for pressure on his blindside but like you said its still a highlight video so there might be more to that aspect that I havent seen. There's some things mechanically that he needs to fix but you can say that for any high school QB short of Andrew Luck. He's a fantastic prospect IMO

I agree that he is a great prospect. Unfortunately, I just think it's going to take a lot more time to correct his mechanical flaws than a few weeks. Ideally, he redshirts, but with Brewer definitely needing a shirt, Overstreet needs to be available to play unless they feel the walk-on or another player can hold down the position in a disaster scenario. In one of the complete Tatum game highlights, Overstreet took a snap in the spread and rolled right with two receivers open in the end zone 20 yards away. He snapped off the pass quickly but it moved so slowly, not one but three defenders were able to react and reach the WR to knock the ball away (again the receiver was wearing #1. Hopefully he didn't have too many concussions last year).

I can only imagine what his arm strength and range really are with proper mechanics and footwork. He doesn't need a Garrett Gilbert windup but some drawback to build potential energy to convert into kinetic energy would be helpful. I would love to hear that he's coming to Austin during his spare time to watch practice and pick up the nuances he can see on the field from the other QB's. If we don't rush him and give him the time to develop first with a small package of plays, Overstreet could be a special QB. If not or if he doesn't do a lot of work on his own at this point while waiting to matriculate, he's going to end up as a no position athlete that rarely sees the field in his 4 years on the 40.

That's how dynamic he can be as a runner. Hopefully the full package develops for him and he can compete with Connor for not just PT but starting.

In the game film I saw of Overstreet he was beyond awful. He was missing open receivers by wide margins. He had at least 3 interceptions that were all his fault and a lost a couple of fumbles too. His decision making and accuracy were terribad. He was also unable to make plays with his feet. He was bottled up running.

I know he has potential, but when a HS team is able to completely and utterly dominate him and shut him down, I just don't see him being able to help at Texas in the near future. I think we'd be better off using Johnathan Gray in the wildcat ala Fozzy.

That's what I'm worried about. When I look Swoopes individual game highlights, I'm not nearly as concerned. There are times I think he misses opportunities to just take over a game simply by trying to get more teammates involved, but I don't necessarily consider that a bad trait to have with him coming to a team that is oozing offensive talent out its ears.

Doesn't have the same form that VY had at his age. Also, two passing highlights for QB? Both of which were to wide open receivers that he failed to hit in stride. Not to mention the fact that we all know Pee Wee competition in Whitewright is just not there compared to the power house teams they have up in Wichita Falls. No thanks.

I really need to see him playing against top tier talent.

Wait so he's allowed to progress as a passer from his junior year to senior year? Don't think that's allowed.

Devante Kincade was apparently the best looking QB at the camp today...

  35. #285
    Told ya'll Kincade was legit

  36. #286
I think Burton said JT looked the best, the rest are fine athletes, not QB prospects.

  37. #287
ARLINGTON, Texas -- Dallas Skyline quarterback Devante Kincade has been labeled as an athlete by many analysts because of his dual-threat ability.

Kincade took a big step toward shedding that tag Saturday at the Elite 11 Regional Quarterback Camp at Cowboys Stadium. Kincade, who is 6-foot and 180 pounds, was named most valuable player at the camp and was the first player to receive an official invite to the national Elite 11 Camp, which is held in July in Redondo Beach, Calif.

"Devante was ready to go from the first snap," said Elite 11 coach Trent Dilfer. "He showed energy, life and excitement in every drill and in every snap. He earned it and showed everybody today that he's a special player."

Kincade, who has scholarship offers from Colorado, Notre Dame, Illinois and Kansas State, beat out five other quarterbacks in a final competition for MVP.

The other quarterbacks to make the final group were Joshua Dobbs from Alpharetta, Ga., Austin Allen of Fayetteville, Ark., Kenny Hill of Southlake (Texas) Carroll, Tyrone Swoopes of Whitewright, Texas, and Cooper Bateman of Salt Lake City (Utah) Cottonwood.
I don't see JT Barrett anywhere on that list

max_olson: QBs separated into groups by caliber now. Getting closer to the final group of top guys. Morris and Swoopes impressing

ESPNwilkerson: As camp comes to a close, swoopes is in what I would consider the B group right now. #elite11

max_olson: Three guys in the group Dilfer isn't coaching: Tyrone Swoopes, JT Barrett, Cody Thomas. Not a good sign for them

max_olson: Update: Swoopes, Chris Johnson added to lead group #Elite11

ESPNwilkerson: Tyrone swoopes just got moved over to first group. Jt barrett and cody thomas still in second group

max_olson: Big moment here. Time for deep sideline ball. Dilfer calls it "the revealing throw."

max_olson: Swoopes kills his 25 yard throw. Dilfer runs across field to high five him. "That's what I'm talking about!"

ESPNwilkerson: Swoopes' first pass in first group is the best of the day. Spot on with 25-yard go route

espn_TLBrown: #Texas commit Tyrone Swoopes just gave Trent Dilfer reason to smile. Beautiful pass in drills

max_olson: Dilfer preps group for final round - the pressure cooker. He demands more energy. We'll learn the groupings soon

max_olson: Dilfer pleased by Swoopes' run through final drill course. Crisp passing, great accuracy

What does Dilfer know, Burton watched some highlights. Swoopes is not a good QB prospect.

Kincade is a legitimate QB candidate but his situation kind of reminds me of Del Barnes last year: 6'0" athletic QB (Though Barnes measured in at 5'11" at at least one camp last year) in the 180-200 pound range that is definitely a serviceable QB option, but not physically talented enough to be a constant threat to house the ball.

A this point, one to look at, but in all honesty, I preferred Barnes from last year over Overstreet last year and I'm not sure I'd put Kincade that much higher in talent and ability than Barnes, given that Kincade's team surrounds him with D1 talent at Skyline while Barnes was not so fortunate.

Dude just flicks it and the ball goes man...saw him in person and he throws a great deep ball.

I'm trying to imagine how much better it would be for both him and his receivers if he had proper mechanics. He could be scary good, but not with those rainbows, and his receivers will pay the highest price getting clocked when the ball finally arrives.

    Molding for the future
Tyrone Swoopes struggles early at Elite 11 but shows plenty of promise

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Tyrone Swoopes is a 6-foot-5, 220-pound blob of clay just needing time and direction to mold into the elite quarterback Longhorns fans hope he becomes.

At least that's the assessment of Elite 11 coach Yogi Roth, who stole the analogy from fellow coach and former NFL quarterback Trent Dilfer after Saturday's regional camp at Cowboys Stadium.
"Trent said it best. We saw the clay," Roth said. "You just want to mold it, put your hands on it and build him into the dominant player that he can be."

Swoopes, from tiny Whitewright, Texas, began to take form as the camp wound down. That subsequently came as the competition heated up for an invitation to the Elite 11 national camp in Redondo Beach, Calif.

But a slow start, which featured a scattering of off-target throws in drills he'd never done before, kept him from getting an invite. That went to Dallas Skyline's DeVante Kincade, who was solid from start to finish.

"I was kind of dead at the beginning but as it got going I picked it up a little," Swoopes said. "I guess it was because I haven't touched a football since football season."

One might find that odd, especially considering the enormous expectations that have already been placed on his broad shoulders. He's been compared to Vince Young so many times he'd probably turn around if 'Vince' was yelled in his direction.

But when you are the big man on campus in a school of only 275, you are going to be asked to wear many hats outside off the football field. He's currently in a track and field state of mind focusing on what he needs to do to improve in Whitewright's relays and also in the long and triple jump. He played basketball prior to that.

"I've been doing other things," Swoopes said. "I think that's why I started slow."

Swoopes knows he's got to pick up a football more often and continue to hone his craft. Especially after Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo told the quarterbacks at the camp that he rarely ever went anywhere without a football growing up. Romo said he would even throw the ball into couch cushions when it got dark and his friends had to go home.

"I need to pick up the ball more and start throwing more than I have," said Swoopes, who totaled 3,661 yards and 42 touchdowns as a junior.

All that considered, Swoopes evolved as the camp progressed and performed his best in crunch time.

That transition from lackluster to lively started when the quarterbacks were broken into four groups based on their performances to that point.

Swoopes was placed in the second group.

Earlier in the camp Romo told Swoopes to make sure he wasn't lazy in his release and to make sure to really follow through in his delivery. Swoopes appeared to take that to heart and quickly moved over to the first group after a few throws to route-running receivers.

That performance helped Swoopes become one of six quarterbacks to compete in the final drill of the camp, a two-minute drill that featured an assortment of short, intermediate and long throws as the player made his way down the field with Roth counting down the game's final seconds.

"What we saw in the two-minute drill is that his mind can play as fast as his athletic ability," Roth said. "He's never dropped back in his life. All of a sudden he's dropping back, I'm screaming at him and he played really poised. I was really proud of him. I think he had a really strong chance to make it to Southern California if he was that way all day."

Swoopes will still have that chance. Just because he didn't get a ticket today doesn't mean he won't be one of the 24 quarterbacks that get invited to the Elite 11 in July. But in order for that to happen, Roth said he'd need to see improvement between now and then.

"The biggest concern is, when we see him next, will he improve?" Roth said. "You want to find guys that are coachable. It was very evident that he was coachable."

It was also very evident that he didn't crack under pressure, which is something he can already feel from the Longhorns fan base.

"I feel the pressure but I think I will be able to handle it pretty well," Swoopes said. "I think because my mom, dad and my family have kept me level-headed, and give me good advice about how to handle it all. I think I will be able to handle it."

Once he shook of the rust of not having thrown a football for a few months, he handled Saturday just fine.

You could say the clay did a little molding of its own.

Gilbert participated in ESPN RISE's 10th anniversary Elite 11 quarterback event from July 21–24. He was one of the 11 high school quarterbacks selected out of a pool of more than a thousand. The Elite 11 played against each other and received coaching from current standout college quarterbacks. An ESPN columnist pointed out that Gilbert was the most likely player from the camp to win the college football national championship
