Y-er here. I can't speak for my whole generation, but I definitely see resentment against our predecessors and current situation from the growing liberty wing.

We're picking up the tab for bloated entitlements and wars, so thanks guys, we really appreciate it.

But the liberty movement is an incoherent mess that appears to be drifting towards royalism and is grounded in the same boomer selfishness that caused this problem.

Take clear lake, for example- for a decade years on this board and the old one i've been saying three things:
    1) massively scale back the military head count
    2) get the gov out of the pension biz
    3) stop buying healthcare for old people who can afford to buy coverage

I should be a perfect ft, right? Wrong.

According to clear lake, I am therefore a Marxist, presumably because In order to accomplish #2 we would have to give up the money we will lose anyway when SS goes broke.

Look austerity is coming, either way. We ca choose it or our creditors will impose it upon us.

Oh, but somehow te gold standard and equal political rights for stateless aggregations of capital will fix everything.

The problem is that if you are running a deficit you are not taxing people enough to cover your expenses (inverse is also true). So we have been running deficits since the 1960s? So no, you $#@!, you didn't pay in your share. Soylent Green these $#@!ers.

What about the 49.5% of Americans who pay zero in federal income taxes?

Not only that, but fair share of what? Why should I pay any share of bull$#@! government programs intended as political payback to unions? Why should I pay any share of bull$#@! expenses the Congress incurs to just get itself reelected? You know what I mean ... museums in Nevada, disability payments to people who are still capable of engaging in substantial gainful activity, foreign aid to China and India, bridges to nowhere in Alaska, bull$#@! studies about Chinese prostitutes, earned income tax credits to people who don't pay income taxes but still get "refunds." The list goes on and on and on....why should I pay for any share of that $#@!?

As Charlie Brown's little sister said, "All I want is what I have coming to me. All I want is my fair share."

Your generation broke it, we have to buy it. At least try not to sound so ungrateful about it. Your's is a generation of draft dodgers. Whether you were a hippie with some self-serving concept of peace and love or attended protests only to mock the dirty hippie with your deferment safely in your pocket, your generation failed it's first test of adulthood.

When the twin towers came crashing down, my generation (including myself) signed up to serve. When your generation decided to start a war in Iraq, we still served, even if we thought it was stupid. You made the mess, we had to clean it up.

When your generation faced it's first test, you hid, protested, and gamed the system rather than serve. The pro-war deferment crowd (such as my father) failed. They were too weak to stand up for their beliefs. The dirty hippies failed. Their self serving protests sure didn't stop a massive wall of names from being built. The real men of your generation were killed, maimed, and mocked. No wonder we were left with such a worthless, selfish group.

I am a child of the early boomers. I grew up with the belief that your generation took part in something special. The reality is that your defining moment, the subject of so many worthless movies saying how special you are, was nothing more than a bunch of selfish children hiding from responsibility. I grew up being taught (implicity), by good people, that military service is honorable work for the stupid and uneducated and that service in general is nice, but seeking wealth is primary.

These lessons were not explicitly stated, but learned from watching your generation.

So keep pointing at others paying less than you. Keep hiding from your responsibility. We wouldn't want you to change now.

My generation- your children- will keep cleaning up your mess. Your generation will keep reminding us how special you are. You're so very special. At least pretend to act grateful as we try to fix it.

A lot of nice generalizations there, but here is the bottom line: my generation is composed of tens of millions of people. Yes, there were a lot of people who ducked their responsibilities from my generation. But by the same token there are millions who did not. Likewise, millions of people from younger generations duck their responsibilities. So do not lump me into the not taking responsibility crowd jack. Everything the government has ever required that I do I have done. Not only that, if I told you what I pay in $#@!ing taxes at all levels it would make you head explode. Do the math ... combine income taxes, employment taxes, property taxes and sales taxes and you will find that the top income earners are paying 50%+ of what they make to the $#@!ing state, local and federal governments unless they can find a way to shelter the income. I think of what I have paid government over the past 37 years since I started working at age 15 and its truly mind-blowing.

Do me a favor ... go to this website: http://dirtyspendingsecrets.com. It will give you just a small taste of the stupid way the government spends. It spends money stupidly because it is headed up by incompetents and managed by dunderheads. If any business would blow money on the stupid things the way our federal government blows money, that business would not survive a year. But since our government can print money these incompetents and dunderheads could give a flying $#@! about spending money efficiently or smartly. Please, just check out the site ... it will open your eyes.

So when I hear Mr. BHO and others say "fair share," I cannot help but think ... do the politicians want to up the ante to where it take almost everything I make so they can redistribute a giant percentage of it to a bunch of lazy and/or corrupt $#@!s who keep voting them into power? Or, so they can blow it on a constellation of dumbass programs that make no sense?

Why does the left always look at this as an issue of high income earnings not paying enough? Why do they not ever look at the government and its propensity to overspend? For example, why has BHO hired more than 100000 federal workers since he came to power? Why do we have so many duplicative programs in the government? Do you have any idea how wasteful and inefficient that is? There are for example more than 100 federal job training programs. Why does the government spend money on dumb things? Take certain Social Security Disability claims as another example... why make up a rule that says a person limited to "light" work who has less than a H.S. education and previously had to work at a level higher than light and has no transferable skills is per se entitled to disability benefits beginning at age 55? That rule makes no sense! Do you have any idea how many nonsensical rules there are in the government, where it likewise blows billions of dollars? Here is one for you: why do we give foreign aid to China? The country that loans us more than a trillion, and we give them aid! Here is another: why give people tax refunds under the EIC when they haven't paid any income taxes? That makes no sense either.

Don't talk to me about my generation $#@!ing things up....instead talk about how certain people in my generation have $#@!ed it up. This is an important distinction, as there are a lot of folks from my generation who have been pulling this wagon and millions who contribute nothing and are happy to just sit in that wagon and let us pull them along. In short, there a hell of a lot of freeloaders.

As we say in Program, when you point a finger at someone, you have three fingers pointing back at you.. and.. I guess.. a thumb pointing up at God. Or something. Whatever. I don't know. I'm sorry. Okay.

Ask any boomer about their role in all this, and you'll likely hear a similar answer. Wannabe Gordon Geckos and aging hippies agree, "it's not my fault. I'm so very special. Look what he did."

Responsibility isn't simply taxes. Reaponsibilty requires introspection and self-evaluation. These are anathema to boomers. Responsibility requires valuing what's right over what's "fair."

If you've earned great wealth over a lifetime built on the backs of your parents- real men and women- and on the heads of your children- already greater men and women than you'll ever be, great. Enjoy counting your counterfeit money.

You've spent a lifetime paying into a system that allowed your parents to live their final years without crushing poverty. While supporting a generation who paid a price you could never really repay, you accumulated great wealth. This is a good thing, but it was built on your parents successes. The wealth that you think you earned is actually a gift from the great men and women of your parent's generation.

Now, as you reach retirement age (a concept that might not exist for my generation), after all the sacrifice of your parents and your children for you, you want to cry about fair. You are so very special.

Save your left/right boogiemen and red herrings for your next AARP meeting. It's all excuses and blame shifting. You are so very special and important. An ungrateful beggar is unbecoming.

Thanks for The Beatles though. They had hair like Justin Bieber and led to awesome bands like Oasis. On second thought...

I am going to try to restate my comment. This isn't left or right. This isn't about individual contributions. I do not fall for shell games because I do not play them. So attempts at misdirecting the conversation to individual government waste programs that you do not agree with only weakens your position (Do you really think that everyone agrees with it all? Do you think I care about how you slice up the tax contributions to reframe a position?)

Since the 1960s we have started running deficits with regularity. This coincided with the Vietnam, but also a reduction in taxes (JFK). If they wanted to pass some of the tax burden to other incomes, they should have done just that and balanced the budget. But no. Boomers can try to bull$#@! that they paid their fair share because that is all the government asked of them. But Boomers ran the government and opted to pass that debt to future generations.

Wrong ... the "Dumbass Government" is elements of my generation. Don't you get it...this is more than a generational issue. On the one hand it is, but on the other hand it is most certainly not. It is about a group of politicians from the Greatest Generation as well as my generation who perpetrated a lie. That lie was made to millions upon millions that we could use the federal government to end poverty.

Here is the other truth. These politicians did not perpetrate this lie because they actually want to end poverty. No, if that happened by some miracle they would have been happy. But the truth is, they perpetrated this lie so they could get voters who were the beneficiaries of these federal expenditures to keep them in power.

So yes, my generation is to blame if you consider that my generation produced these politicians (as well as the Greatest Generation). But no, I do not accept this responsibility. I cannot help it if my generation produced corrupt, lying politicians. Guess what? Your generation has produced the same types of politicians.

Are you $#@!ing kidding me? You had more growing up than any generation before you. Now that you have to be weaned off of mommy's titties, you're holding your breath and throwing a temper tantrum. Get educated, work hard and don't behave in a stupid way that will cost you later (i.e. have some semblance of morality), and you'll be fine.

The fallacy of your thinking is that you assume that all baby boomers wanted an entitlement society. Many did not and saw it for what it was - demographically unsustainable. Unfortunately, most of you haven't learned a $#@!ing thing from all of this and are doubling down on stupid wanting more government programs and control of the economy. You really think that will make things better.

The one thing the boomers are doing for you (and concomitantly screwing themselves and their savings) is destroying the value of the dollar. At least when you get jobs (I realize that's a big IF for a lot of you) and are taxed, you'll be paying back a debt that has been massively reduced in real terms due to inflation. Your welcome.

The wealth that you think you earned is actually a gift from the great men and women of your parent's generation...
Dude, don't tell me I paid in to support my parents. WTF ... my father paid in the max the great majority of his working years. Do you have any idea how much more money he would have if he had invested that? Instead it sat in a retirement "lockbox" that politicians regularly raided to pay for their bull$#@!.

Do not blame my for these deficits. I voted against politicians who pushed against deficits. Unfortunately, many of the one I voted for lied, and guess what, spent more than the government brought in. The real problem here is the intoxicating nature of Washington. It corrupts our politicians.

So it is generational theft here in one sense. If you look at this from the standpoint of what millions of voters want and a multitude of politicians want ... all from my generation. But don't put that rap on me. I've never supported deficits. Not only that, all these years I have paid into the system, I have gotten nothing directly back from the government. My only benefits have been things like the umbrella of protection our military gives us, roads paid for with federal money and a fairly stable financial system.

Can we stop with this generation > than the other crap? I am a part of neither and it gets annoying, they both have the exact same genes (evolution hardly takes place within one gen) so the difference is mostly a consequence of their environment, and quite frankly there was a lot of horrifying acts done in WWII, but I am sure some will say that it was the greatest gen - 1 that are at fault.

Man, some folks here seem to think this article mentions them specifically while dragging their family name through the mud. Their are tens of millions of boomers. Of course not every single one of you created the system. But, your generation did. Should the article instead have listed every person by name born between 1945-1960 who contributed in any way to this message? Some of you boomers have thin skin.

And clear lake, "get educated, work hard, you'll be fine?" Did you even read the article?

I have to admit that when I got to the part where they were quoting that $#@!head David Frum I stopped.

Well, you can't get a degree in post-modern, calypso lesbian poetry and hope to make a living. That's a big problem for a bunch of kids. They were told they had to go to college to get ahead. So they did and racked up tens of thousands of dollars worth of debt pursuing degrees that are absolutely worthless in the marketplace.

They'd have been better off spending their time as a plumber's apprentice.

While I am a HUGE fan of calypso lesbian poetry... This is one of our modern myths. There are a LOT of folks who have what used to be marketable degrees in legit majors who are unemployed or way underemployed. Couple that with skyrocketing tuition, and you have a disaster. Before, you took out loans that can probably be paid off in 10 years or less.

Now, the loans have to be bigger to cover tuition that has vastly outpaced inflation - think 15-20 years to pay off. Add to that that your starting pay is lower than anyone originally expected it would be. Now, you're looking at 25 years to pay off your loans. When you are in a position that you can't even START to get ahead till your late 40s...that's a large pile of $#@!.

I was lucky and was pretty much ahead of that curve, and got scholarships to boot. But for folks a mere 10-15 years behind me, they're in a world of $#@!.

So, you're saying that you put no thought into it and still tore down the greatest country in the world?

Baby Boomers, why the $#@! should we pick you over our own children? Tremendous amount of debt, not a lot of money, why should society not just push you out the door and spend the next 25 years cleaning up the mess and resetting this country for future generations?

sooner or later the system is going to break. it's better to start cutting back now, across the board, than having it all crash at once.

Because that's how socialism works. You pretend that it's for the benefit of the poor and downtrodden but in reality, the well-off and politically connected benefit the most. I can't help it if people are suckers for "spreading the wealth around" demagoguery. You have to admit, it sells.

You do realize that you didn't respond to his post, right?

He asked a very central question, I think, really THE central question - why should we pick the boomers over our own children?

Because to your point, the boomers are redistributing the wealth of future generations, as yet unborn, to themselves.

The answer is you don't get to choose. I asked that question my entire life. Why confiscate my money and give it to welfare bums and cheats? Why not my kids? But I didn't get a choice.

Edit: personally, I agree with the sentiment. Social security is a wealth transfer from the poorer young to the richer old. But you know what, you youngsters continually vote for the Democrats who are on record as saying that Social Security is fully funded. No problem.

Before you do that, will you give me back all the money then I paid into SS and MC all these years, plus a rate of return that reflects the S&P average the past 40 years?

I'll give the Baby Boomers back their money, but only after the knock the debt down to the level it was when Bill Clinton, the first Boomer in Chief, took office.

    We got a deal?

Not my doing we had a spendthrift Congress led by Nancy Pelosi and others, and 2 spendthrift Presidents. They did not handle things at all the way I would.

Balogna. You do have a choice, and you are choosing to screw the future.

Pehaps that will make the catfood taste better.

Ask a boomer who is to blame, and they'll surely tell you. Just as surely, they'll point at someone else. They only want what they have coming to them, their fair share.

Your fair share was earned on the backs of your parents and the heads of your children and their children. The American dream used to be that your children had more opportunity than you.

This isn't some red herring about socialism or free market or taxes. This is about stealing from your children and grandchildren and destroying the great country your parents built. You earned your wealth by stealing from your children and my children. You earned and stole your wealth by counterfeiting money, making mine worthless.

"But someone else stole more than I did!" You're all criminals. Your generation gave us nothing but anger, selfishness, self importance, and greed. Even the good men women of the generation have failed. You stole, but you gave some it it back, so that somehow makes it ok. You gave my children's money to some poor people, so somehow that's mot theft. Enjoy your well earned retirement since I'll be spending mine making up for paying for your's.

It isn't about about someone trying to shortchange you from your stolen, counterfeit wealth. It isn't even about expecting introspection for the first time in your life or considering the path of destruction you've waged that will ripple for generations. Just get out of the way and try to be graceful about it as we try to clean up your mess.

Cue the boomers pointing at someone else and the cries of "don't blame me."

I'm a part of that generation and I've stolen from no one. I do not get jack $#@! from the government other than general benefits, such as the protection our military gives all of us and roads built with federal taxes, that sort of thing. How could I have earned my wealth by stealing from children if the government does not give me anything directly?

You are damn right I will have earned my retirement given the hundreds of thousands of dollars I have paid towards my social security and medicare over my lifetime. Also, I did not give your children's money to poor people. A bunch of politicians did that in order keep themselves in power.

I do not want my "fair share".

For me to get my "fair share" would require me to recoup something I am planning to lose because IT IS ALREADY LOST.

I hope that those who care about the future of this country would be able to understand that if they don't give this one up, we will lose it anyway. But it has to be Generation X. It has to be us- as the smallest demographic group of the three most impacted (boomers, us, and Y), we have a unique window of opportunity to take this one on the chin, because a clear majority will be glad to vote to $#@! us over- the boomers won't lose anything and the Y'ers will benefit from lower taxes and a robust future surplus.

We can be heroes and vanquish the dragon, or we can be the children of cowards, who bested our parents in selfishness.
