I am not necessarily disagreeing with you, but they both had something to offer each other during negotiations. It is really hard to say if Long throws down and beats Bama and LSU, AND gets in the title game that he is not considered the full time guy. It again would place Long in a difficult situation to fire a guy who just won arky a title. Of course this means little as I don't see any of that happening, just wanted to point out if he should win it all. Has a head football coach ever been fired right after winning a title?
The most likely scenario is that Arkansas wins 8-10 games and a new coach is brought in in December and retains/hires staff as he wishes.
But if its 11+ wins? IMO, no matter what JLS is not retained. If somehow that happened, he would've done an excellent job staying out of the way of a talented team and good coordinators. But he would've had very little to do with getting the team to that point. Arkansas has its work cut out for us, and an old, figurehead, CEO type coach won't cut it over the long term. Its not an easy program to win at.
If that happens, I think he rides out into the sunset a winner, and one of the coordinators is promoted in an attept to keep things going. And to be honest, I think that's all JLS wants. As he said in the linked Pat Forde article below, reagrding his last three years at MSU soured his long career, "I always said to myself, 'That's not the way I'm going to go out,' " Smith said. "I want a chance again. I'm going to write this ending differently."

Arky might be alright with only a one season stint with JLS, but he is a very quirky guy. You can read the comments on the second link to get a flavor the the no love lost by MSU fans for the Johnelle era.
In retrospect, I think Petrino should have fought this thing. One look at the photo below, and who could argue it wasn't entrapment on the school's part?
