Texas Rangers right-handed pitcher Neftali Feliz will not make a start this weekend against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Instead, Feliz will be available to pitch after Scott Feldman tonight and would then start Tuesday in Toronto. The move gives the club a chance to get Feliz some additional time off and monitor his innings.

Chalk it up to a learning experience for the Rangers after dealing with Alexi Ogando last season. Ogando was making the transition from reliever to starter -- just like Feliz is this season -- and he pitched every fifth time through the rotation. He was an All-Star starter, but in logging more innings than he had before in his career, he ran out of gas in the second half and ended up as a key bullpen piece in the postseason.

"We can either take the opportunity to do it now or do it on the back end," Washington said. "We didn't really have a plan in for Ogando. But we learned from that."

The decision alters the rotation, putting Yu Darvish on the mound Monday in Toronto. Here's how it lines up:

•Friday: Matt Harrison
•Saturday: Colby Lewis
•Sunday: Derek Holland
•Monday: Yu Darvish
•Tuesday: Neftali Feliz
•Wednesday: Matt Harrison

"I feel good," Feliz said through a translator. "They had the extra day and I think it will help me. It's a long season and I don't know how many innings I'll pitch. It's up to them when I pitch."

Washington said if Feliz doesn't pitch tonight, he will try to get him in a game or two before his Tuesday start just to get some work in. Feliz is making the transition from closer to starter. The most inning he's pitched in a full professional season was 127 1/3 innings in 2008.

Feliz is 1-1 with a 2.70 ERA in three starts this season. In 20 innings, he's held opponents to a .171 batting average.

Unfortunately, the Ballpark is optimized for a crowd of about 30,000. Any more than about 35,000 and the place just gets uncomfortable--choke points (e.g., left field where the concourse exits to open air above the visitors' bullpen, narrow concourse behind the right field bleachers, narrow concourse behind home plate along the first base side where they built new ticket windows) choke with people, lines for bathrooms and concessions become unreasonably long, parking dries us.

They've done some things over the past two years to ameliorate those problems as large crowds have become more commonplace. I think they bought up every cooler in five states to set up temporary beer stands during the playoffs last year. But in some ways they've made it worse. Adding that ticket window behind home plate really narrowed that concourse. And the club level is just a mess--who designed that anyway with no concession stands? Now they've got some pop-up concession stands, which makes the concourse very narrow up there.

But the worst part is the parking and traffic. There's nothing that can be done on that. And without any public transportation to Arlington, it's just always going to be a catastrophe.

we can speculate all we want but two facts are 1) darvish pitched like a boss last night and 2) we have insane depth and flexibility to do whatever the $#@! we want.

One of my favorite moments of that series was her telling everyone Ron was arguing the interference call on Cano's solo shot and "he's not gonna win this argument", then later in the same game Nellie drilling one to pour salt in the wound of an empty stadium and her letting out an audible "ugh" like she'd given up on the series.
