Yesterday I decided to take a break and go with a easy quick read. It doesn't get much quicker than "the body". What a waste of time.
I understand that it is a short story or novella. But, his characters are poorly developed in this work. He does a poor job of painting the emotional picture that would surely stand out in this setting. 12 year old boys would be wrought with emotion, fear, and nerves embarking upon this adventure. None of this was conveyed in his storytelling (supposed to be the crown jewel of his abilities). From start to finish it felt as though he was assigned this in 11th grade, as though he counted the words every paragraph to make certain he didn't go over a 5000 word minimum, putting forth only the effort required to get a B-.
Why are people so enamored with him? I read Insomnia years ago. I enjoyed it, however, it wasn't nearly a book I would feel the need to read again. The same thing with Christine, that one felt as though he was writing only to disenfranchised adolescent males. Porn without tits.
