Police: Officer kills dog after Mace ineffective

An Austin police officer shot and killed an aggressive pit bull terrier mix Monday night, police said.

Lt. Randy Pogue said police received a call about two aggressive dogs roaming the neighborhood in the 1900 block of Canterbury Street in East Austin shortly before 7 p.m. and two officers responded to the scene.

“One dog came aggressively at one of the officers, and the officer swung his flashlight. The dog came at him again and the officer sprayed him with Mace. When the dog came at the officer a third time, the officer shot once and killed the dog. The dog owner came back and took control of the other dog,” Pogue said.

Pogue did not have the name of the officer who discharged his gun, and that he was not injured.

Pogue said he was not aware if the dog owner was charged.

If that is indeed the way it went down, I have no problem with it. The dogs were out roaming in public (thus, they were not on their owner's property or under their owner's control), exhibited REPEATED aggressive behavior, and non-lethal means of control were ineffective.

I don't think any reasonable person is saying that the cops can't shoot a dog. But it's different when the cop comes onto the owner's property and the exchange is essentially "BANG! Stop or I'll shoot!"

i'll pile on. Seems like there are witnesses (dog owner at least) and there would at least be some kind of hint of wrongdoing if it had occurred (or maybe the owner doesn't speak english? who knows just a wild ass guess since this was on the east side). but i have no reason to think the report is wrong, and from those facts stated, definitely a justified killing. Flashlight, mace, dog still charging? put that bitch down. Sucks all around but no real other option.

no to mention the dogs were on the street roaming, and the owner was around and couldn't control them. that does seem a little wierd that the second dog wasn't controlled until the first down but that might be due to the bad AAS reporting or the report itself, can't really tell at this point.

If this is the same dog I had a run in with a few months ago I am glad it is no longer a threat. I think I posted about this a while back but searched and could not find it. I'll try to make it as brief as possible:

Wife and I were walking our Golden down to Town Lake and came across this dog. It charged us but did not bark or bear teeth, initially. After a few seconds of my dog cowering and generally trying to get away from the dog I took action and shooed the pit away. We got a few steps down the street and it came back, this time more aggressive and started snapping at my dog. I yelled at it and charged the dog and again and it backed off momentarily but then circled back and re-engaged. At some point its (presumed) owner came out - a young, hispanic-looking short dude - and I asked him to please restrain his dog. He smirked at me and weakly tried to corral his dog (never grabbed it mind you, just trying to guide it much like a blue heeler herds livestock). Finally the dog dog attacked very aggressively so I picked up my 60-lb golden to avoid physical confrontation but the pit would no longer respond to my advances and yelling and finally it snapped at me, so I kicked it square in the jaw. It finally backed off. I yelled at the owner to get his $#@!ing dog and he replied "watch your mouth or I'll sic (sp?) him on you." He finally got the dog corralled and we got on down the street but needless to say if it is the same dog I don't feel bad for animal or owner (well slightly for the dog only because it probably didn't know better).

I carry pepper spray with me on the trails for that reason.

but really, if that is some veiled insult I will say this: I'm not proud or happy that I had to kick a dog. But I perceived it as a threat, my wife was screaming in fear and my dog and I were being attacked. I didn't know what else to do. It's not like reasoning with the animal would have worked. My dog was on a leash and had I let her go she probably would have engaged the other dog in an attempt to protect me and I did not extensive vet bills - or worse. So yeah, I kicked a dog. At least I didn't shoot it.

I'm well aware of that. I've had just about every breed of dog come at me aggressively in that neighborhood, including chihuahuas (all behind fences, though).

chill man! it was serious. i was gonna add you shoulda beat the dude's ass for being a punk and not watching his dog but i honestly meant good for you for defending your dog/family. not sure i would/could have picked up my dog but i definitely would have been beating on that dog if it kept trying to attack me and mine.

edit: want to add i dont blame the dog so much as the owner, in your story as well as in today's. if someone leaves their dog out wandering and its acting aggressive to people, lock that $#@! up or deal with the consequences. sucks for the dog but the blame is on the owner.

Unfortunately I've had to kick roaming dogs in the head in self defense before in similar situations while walking my dogs on leash. My dogs did not want to back down which made it harder since I had to heel/pull my dog back and get in front of it. It is a scary situation when you realize you could be tripped and on the ground.

So I got attacked by a dog today on my morning run in the same area (running in the street because cars were parked over the sidewalk). Anyone want to venture a guess at the breed? Apparently I'm pretty good at evading dog bites because all this bitch managed to do was slightly nick my ankle with its paw. As soon as I was next door the dog backed off and went back to its front porch (the driveway had no gate and the gate in the fence was wide open). Called the police, explained what happened, they took it from there. Jogged on back home. I wasn't really concerned for myself but for some poor kid that walks or rides by. Sigh.
