Good movies you never got around to watching.

What are they? Clearly I'm no movie critic or connoisseur but I thought this would be an interesting thread. Some movies I just haven't mustered up the interest to sit down and watch in their entirety. And I'm not saying I don't plan to ever watch said movies just that theres a good chunk out there that I really haven't seen yet for one reason or another.

    Star Wars
    Harry Potter
    Lord of the Rings
    Brokeback Moutain
    The Shawshank Redemption

I put off watching Braveheart for five years. An egregious error on my part. You not watching Shawshank Redemption is worse.

Yeah, the whole debate is what you classify as good. For instance I can't figure out a good reason why the ladies on this site love Shawshank so much.

The movies I saw later in life that I was surprised I never got around to seeing are:

All of Kubrick. Particularly Paths to Glory and Strangelove

    On the Waterfront

I'm so slow to catch new releases that I eventually get around to seeing most movies that get a decent reception. I think that is what you are talking about -- movies that get a great reception that for some reason, logistics or you just not being in the mood, you take along time to see.

"Gone with the Wind" and "Casablanca" are really the only two "classic great" films I think I've never gotten around to seeing.

I have never seen 'titanic' or 'avatar'. Obviously they are not classics, but I think the two highest grossing films of all time.

"Lawrence of Arabia". I need to see it at the Paramount some summer since everything I've ever read about it says it demands to be seen on the big screen. Hell, if Alamo Drafthouse ever puts up a special theme showing of it I'd be there in a heartbeat.

I'd say on Gone with the Wind you really do need to see it at some big screen, preferably near some nice restaurant if you want to leave early. It's got some prettty technicolors.

Casablanca is just a damn fine little movie that you are going to like whenever or whereever you see it. Small screen is fine. Find someone who likes old movies and just watch the damn thing.

My classification for good would be any movie you can find on a "best movies of the decade" list for any decade. Basically a famous critically acclaimed movie you are expected to have watched as an American.

It took my awhile to get the Mr to watch "The African Queen" then he said he can't believe he waited so long.

"Citizen Kane" ( because it was late and I got bored and left but maybe I should give it another try).
    "Annie Hall"

Unpossible. If you have ever had cable there is a 99.9999999999% chance that you happened upon TNT, it was playing, and you ended up watching it.

I only watched 2001 last year. Tried it as a kid and never got much past the middle of the second part. Just too slow for my 8-9 year old attention span.

I've had Gangs of New York ripped to my HTPC for close to three years. My wife doesn't want to watch it and I haven't gotten around to converting to to watch on the train.

The Big Lebowskie. Really never had even heard of it until everyone started quoting it on HF. My wife owned the DVD before we were married, so its ripped to our media sever, but again, just never got around to it.

Watch these three immediately, probably in that exact same order. Assuming you haven't seen Godfather 2, which might be better than the first.

Full disclosure -- I didn't see the Godfather movies until after college, I don't think.

I own Taxi Driver but have only seen about 1/3 of it.

I never saw it until I started dating my wife in '04. It's her favorite movie. We watched it and when it was done, I went to put the DVD back. She had the box set, but Godfather 3 was missing. I asked her what happened to it? She responded "What are you talking about? As far as I'm concerned there were only two Godfathers made!"

    Watch it now.

And here's a spoiler alert about your reaction: the first time you see it, you're going to think: what was all the fuss about? It was sort of funny I guess...

But then watch it again. And again. And again. I promise you, it WILL get funnier every single damn time you watch it.

I've seen pretty much almost all of the movies mentioned above, but here are a couple I've never seen:

    Schindler's List
Fargo (caveat: I've seen bits and pieces of this on TV, but It always seems I come across it halfway or 3/4 the way through the movie.)

I finally saw GWTW about two months ago and was seriously disappointed. I did NOT like it. I found it boring and most of the characters terribly annoying.

Schindler's List has a good many detractors but Spielberg is quality and the movie has some astounding scenes.

There are a bunch, but the one where the old man has to make the widget while being timed by the nice German soldier, and then the follow up outside, was one that has really stuck with me, for some reason.

I didn't see Casablanca until Paramount did it a couple summers ago. Of course afterward I understood why it's considered one of the greatest movies of all time.

Their summer film series is an awesome way to see old movies that you know are good for super cheap. I hope the schedule this year is good.

I'm ashamed at how many movies I haven't seen. Definitely haven't seen a lot of the ones on this thread. Too many movies, not enough time, other priorities.

Casablanca - Seen probably 75% of the movie, just never sat through the entire thing.

Lawrence of Arabia - I've tried, I've really tried, but I can't seem to get through it.

Twilight which I haven't and won't see should not be in this $#@!ing conversation.

Titanic and Harry Potter are $#@! movies.

    I've seen everything else mentioned.

Full agreement on The Big Lebowski, 1st time, meh... that was okay... each subsequent time funnier.

I've seen every single movie mentioned in this thread except the Harry Potter movies and Paths to Glory (and I plan to keep it that way). When I got out of college, I made an extremely long list of classics movies I wanted to see and I started renting then. On VHS. $#@! I'm getting old. It's gonna take that level of dedication for some of you to catch up. Here's some tips:

    Be unemployed
    Have no life
    Stay up all night
    Watch movies
    Smoke a lot of weed

The last one is superfluous, but I recommend it anyway.

These are the essentials on your list. THE STING is among my favorite five or six movies of all time. It's one of my "Stop Down" flicks. George Roy Hill did pretty $#@!ing good with STING, SLAP SHOT and BUTCH CASSIDY.

I thought the Harry Potter movies that I've seen -- probably the first four -- were pretty well done. They aren't classics by any stretch of the imagination but I enjoyed them.

Neg rep away. I'm told it's good, and maybe it gets better as you get into it, but I literally can't ever stay awake long enough to find out. Probably tried watching it on 4 separate occasions before giving up.

I'm pretty sure I stumbled across it as with other classics but I have no recollection of ever watching the whole thing. I watched Lost in Translation last week.

Their summer film series is an awesome way to see old movies that you know are good for super cheap. I hope the schedule this year is good.
Casablanca is always the kickoff film for the Paramount summer series and Gone With the Wind is always the final film.

Don't see Casablanca at home on the television, take a date to the Paramount to see it and have a nice dinner afterward. You can't lose.

I keep trying to think of one and keep drawing a blank. I have seen all those mentioned in this thread so far, except the obvious smartass one, Twitard. I finally came up with one but it isn't that old of a movie, Inception, just haven't gotten around to it.

AFI is too focused on American films, but it is not a terrible list. This list is better:

I'm a pretty uneducated viewer of movies but I have seen alot of the classics. The fact that my wife doesn't like what I like actually makes it easy to go into my own cave and watch what I want in peace.

The way I caught up on flicks was essentially getting hooked on one or two directors at a time. I went to a site like this:

    http://www.theyshootpictures.com/gf1...0directors.htm

Went to the directors I thought I would get into (Kubrick instead of Ozu, for instance) and watched what was "highly recommended". Then I either stuck with that director or moved on. Guys like Kubrick and Powell and Pressburger and Bunuel -- watched everything I could find. Guys like Ozu and Antonioni -- slower going.

For instance, Woody Allen: Highly Recommended: Annie Hall (1977)*, Manhattan (1979)*, Hannah and Her Sisters (1986)*, Crimes and Misdemeanors (1989)*, Bullets Over Broadway (1994)

Yeah, you have to see at least the first two.

Kubrick: Highly Recommended: The Killing (1956)*#, Paths of Glory (1957)*, Spartacus (1960)*, Dr. Strangelove (1964)*, 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)*, Full Metal Jacket (1987)*

Every one of these kicks ass.

Bergman: Highly Recommended: Wild Strawberries (1957)*, Cries and Whispers (1972)*

These are tougher, but I knew they would be. I still liked them. And they make viewing modern Swedish movies more interesting.

You are bound to find someone who you just "get". Or discover a gem even if you only look at directors you konw.
