The Emperor decrees 90 hours of federal training for farm kids...

This is going to go over well. Most farm chores will be off-limits anyway:

    http://dailycaller.com/2012/04/25/ru...g-farm-chores/

Under the rules, children under 18 could no longer work “in the storing, marketing and transporting of farm product raw materials.”

“Prohibited places of employment,” a Department press release read, “would include country grain elevators, grain bins, silos, feed lots, stockyards, livestock exchanges and livestock auctions.”

The new regulations, first proposed August 31 by Labor Secretary Hilda Solis, would also revoke the government’s approval of safety training and certification taught by independent groups like 4-H and FFA, replacing them instead with a 90-hour federal government training course.

Surround yourself with activists and environmentalists who have no $#@!ing clue what life is like in rural areas and you barf out gems like this pile of horse $#@!. I'm sure they're experts on unions and how many particulates of carbon that a tractor expels into the air per second, but $#@!ing clueless on lives of kids outside of L.A. or Chicago.

Isn't the EPA about to crack down on farms for the dust they generate?

This is what big government looks like. Stupid, inefficient and expensive.

It's not the environmentalists. Who benefits most from hurting small, family farms? Large, corporate farms is who.

After thinking about what I posted for a while, I came to the conclusion that this is probably not done out of ignorance, but pandering to some group. What is the driving factor behind it? Large farms? Forcing family farms to hire people to do manual labor? Dunno. Just speculating.

"Yup what an awesome business model: Put your customers/clients out of business! PERFECT!"

You have to understand there is a LOT more to these guys than just selling product. The real goal is to control production.

    A. This will not change plantable acres or livestock numbers. It just concentrates them into a smaller number of "farmers" making it easier to control. Monsanto or DuPont sell the same amount of seed and chemicals regardless. Less total revenue (as it'll be bigger deals at lower numbers...but less overhead in sales / delivery / marketing).
    B. It actually would increase profits as they would be able to control the industry more. Big farmers are not as concerned about quality or management. They cannot effectively manage larger numbers of acres (over 3k acres yields drop below state average for all but the top 2-5% of corn and soybean farmers) so they're easier to satisfy as they know they'll never get top yields.

My best guess is we'll see a situation where farmers get $20 an acre to farm above their costs. The cost of putting in an acre of corn has skyrocketed and most large farmers don't have the capital to really grow a whole lot more. 2012 and 2013 look like they could be financial loosers for most farmers...especially the large ones that pay the highest rents to get all those acres. Whatever capital they have could quickly disappear with $4 corn.

We've already seen this in hog and chicken / egg production. Try raising 100 head of hogs. It's damn near impossible as there is no packing plants willing to take them. They have cradle to slaughter planning for most every 'kill spot'. They don't want your 100 pigs...they don't need them. Most hog farmers here get paid $$ per head. They can own the hog house with a rental contract, get paid a salary to manage a Co owned house, or allow a Co owned and managed site on their farm in exchange for taking the manure (fertilizer on the cheap...the downside being smell and cost of spreading it which isn't free). None of the companies that place the hogs will consider anything but confinement. My dad has 20k sq ft of hog and cattle lots that sit empty...so do most farmers up here.

    Hog house facility.

    Inside.

I farm. I sell seed for a majority of my income. I know what I'm talking about here.

We are at the cusp of a huge AG transitional period...potentially massive. We have 50% of the farmers who are retirement age. We have massive outside investment in land and AG. The opportunity for someone like myself to grow our small operation is basically zero because I'm not willing to take massive loss or risk for minimal rewards.

When it costs $500-$800 an acre to put in corn, you could lose $100 to $200 an acre real easily right now. Unfortunately we have a lot of greedy morons as farmers. We literally had a rent auction a month ago where a farmer guaranteed himself a loss of at least $120 an acre by renting this land. Most of them do it for 'show' or 'pride' or to one up their neighbor. "Oh...well we farm 4000 acres". BFD...how much did you make? Some do it to justify new equipment or having a semi or some other major purchase.

Most of the 2-3k acre guys didn't make any more than the 500-800 acre farmers last year...they just took on $#@! loads more risk.

    My major beefs with farming...

It was the original 'too big to fail' as banks wrote down loans and forgave the biggest and worst offenders in the 1980's. Those are typically the biggest morons now because they've learned there is no punishment for poor mgmt.

Laws like this will take even more young people away from farming...we need more farmers...not less. Big, Corp farms will be bad for productivity and pricing. Giving control to massive Corps like ADM, Monsanto, and DuPount will be worse. Farming is something that you learn over a lifetime and it gets in your blood young. This law will diminish both knowledge and desire.

The Gov is a huge hindrance to farming with their programs and subsides. Getting the Gov out of AG would be a huge boon to all of us...and would improve mgmt and competition.

^^^^ You ever thought about getting into Agro-tourism? There are a lot of farms in SC that let people come out and pick their own fruits and veggies directly from the fields. Talked to one lady and she said it's much cheaper and efficient on her end to put up her signs around the county each year and place a couple of ads in the newspaper and she has a higher income per pound than she does when she sells to the local stores. On my end, I don't mind the 15-20 minutes of picking, because for one her farm is closer to me than the nearest grocecy store, secondly her product is obviously fresher than the produce in the grocery store, and lastly, her produce is cheaper. I regularly get about 5-6 lbs of strawberries from her farm for $8, but depending on what grocery store I go to, the same amount could cost me anywhere from $13 to $20, depending on the time of year.

This is going to go over well. Most farm chores will be off-limits anyway:
Unless i am missing something, that article's very title and main thesis is extremely faulty.

    http://www.dol.gov/opa/media/press/whd/WHD20111250.htm

From the Department of Labor : The proposed regulations would not apply to children working on farms owned by their parents.

My guess is the law was to designed to protect children under 18 who work on huge corporate run farms. Read the press release, i don't see a lot of sinister going ons.. just an attempt to protect children. I am ok with not allowing a company to have an 15 year old driving power driven equipment.

Ever been on a farm YoLaDu?

Tell me YoLaDu. Can my children earn money helping out at their uncle and aunt's farm or at the grain elevator during the summer?

    http://floppingaces.net/2012/03/22/m...rican-farmers/

This just shows how much the Obamacrats are out of touch with America’s farm belt. In multi-generational farm families, you often have several siblings or other relatives living in close proximity. Parts of the operation may be owned by several family members. Some of the land may be rented. Some family farms are technically considered limited liability corporations or other such arrangements. It can get complicated.

Johnny might work on his dad’s farm, but he might also go right next door to his uncle’s property to work for him a few hours in the afternoon. These rule changes would make that traditional practice much more difficult.

Under these rules, kids wouldn’t get to drive (or sometimes even ride!) tractors. Typically, farm youngsters drive tractors from an early age. I did. My 14-year old nephew, an experienced tractor driver, tells me he started driving a tractor at about age 7 and was driving in the field by 9 or 10.

Not only do the new regulations prohibit the kids’ driving tractors, except under certain conditions, they can’t even ride the tractors!

Farm kids would also be restricted from working with livestock.

To be sure, livestock, like farm machinery, can be dangerous. I remember my dad told me never to turn my back on a bull. But does the DOL think farmers aren’t aware of the dangers? That’s precisely why farm children are exposed to the farm operations from an early age, then gradually placed into positions of more and more responsibility.

Thankfully Senators Thune and Moran along with 37 co-sponsors are offering up a bill to fight this attack our farmers:

Last year, DOL Secretary Hilda Solis proposed rules that would restrict family farm operations by prohibiting youth under the age of 18 from being near certain age animals without adult supervision, participating in common livestock practices such as vaccinating and hoof trimming, and handling most animals more than six months old, which would severely limit participation in 4-H and FFA activities and restrict their youth farm safety classes; operating farm machinery over 20 PTO horsepower; completing tasks at elevations over six feet high; and working at stockyards and grain and feed facilities. The language of the proposed rule is so specific it would even ban youth from operating a battery powered screwdriver or a pressurized garden hose.

“The Department of Labor has proposed 85 pages of unreasonable and overreaching rules that would unnecessarily restrict the participation of young people in agriculture related activities,” said Thune. “Family farms and farming communities teach young people responsible work ethics and these proposed rules would change that by severely limiting the commonplace activities in which young people can learn about agriculture. This is another example of the Obama administration initiating unsolicited regulations that would prohibit normal practices that have been carried out in rural areas for generations—not to mention limiting a desperately needed workforce to replace the current generation of farmers whose average age is nearing 60 years old.”

“There is no better example of the vast overreach of government into the everyday lives of Americans than the Department of Labor’s proposed rule to regulate young people working on farms and ranches,” Sen. Moran said. “For generations, the contributions of young people have helped family farm and ranch operations survive and prosper. If this proposal goes into effect, not only will the shrinking rural workforce be further reduced, and our nation’s youth be deprived of valuable career training opportunities, but a way of life will begin to disappear. This proposal should alarm more than just rural America

Ever been on a farm YoLaDu?
Yes,more times than i can count. I have family that owns a farm.

Tell me YoLaDu. Can my children earn money helping out at their uncle and aunt's farm or at the grain elevator during the summer?
I would imagine so.. wait, do they fill out W-2 forms?

Despite my snarkiness, you have to admit the article is way off base. Come on, the article is titled : "Rural kids, parents angry about Labor Dept. rule banning farm chores."

That is not what is happening here.

I went to the effort to actually find the press release and not rely on the Daily Caller to define what is being propose; if you all want to move the goal posts, that is fine. If anything, these regulations don't hurt family farms, but limit what corporate farms can do, unlike what was asserted earlier in the thread.

The congressman who are crying about this bill are not doing so for the rights of family farmers, they are doing so for lobbyist with deep pockets who represent corporate farming interests. After all, as several of you all said, those are the ones with the power, money and influence.

I regularly get about 5-6 lbs of strawberries from her farm for $8, but depending on what grocery store I go to, the same amount could cost me anywhere from $13 to $20, depending on the time of year.

Why? What business is it of yours? You're not on the farm. It's not your children. Why do you believe you or anyone else should regulate how someone else conducts their business on their private property?

By your logic, I shouldn't have been able to use our lawnmower or weedeater when I was kid, because you don't think kids should do any kind of work using power driven equipment.

Well first of all, there are very few mexicans in SC and they all live in like 3 clusters across the state. Second of all, I already said that I do the picking. Third of all, I just want to say third of all.

The proposals actually seem pretty reasonable, despite the faux outrage....

    From JMHammer's link....

The part about not working with animals might need a bit of clarification.
On a dairy, when you're tall enough to keep a 5-gallon bucket off the ground, you start bottle feeding calves.( I was 7-8)

When you can reach the pedals on the tractor, you start blading the lot at the milkbarn and driving to feed( adult on trailer putting out bales of hay- the old small ones.)

point is, at least in my experience and what I intimately know of people that still farm, kids grow up working.

I would imagine if I grew up around a welder, a plumber, or other tradesman, I would have grown up working that job too, even if it was "off the record."

One of my biggest single fears as a parent is that my sons will not know what it means to work, and develop that sense of responsibility BEFORE they are 40 or so... It is hard as $#@! to make stuff up for your kids to do when you live in the burbs...LOL.

Why? What business is it of yours? You're not on the farm. It's not your children.
exactly, and the DoL is not making it their business with what your children do on your farm. It's in the link.

First stupid thing was climbing on haystacks and kicking off bales from 16 feet up, without collapsing the bales you were using to push off. Not that big of a deal, but could get hurt.

Then, the "normal" way to feed was to have a person on the tractor driving with a person standing on the bouncing trailer with an open knife and/or a pitch-fork while bumping thru the pasture. Not too dangerous, but enough that people could, and did get hurt.

But, because you couldn't always find enough help to do it the "normal" way, I learned at an early age how to be self-sufficient. That involved driving the tractor by myself, without any one on the trailer, and putting the tractor in low gear. Then, climbing down off the tractor while it was moving, jumping off the step right in front of the rear wheel of the tractor, and landing out of the path of the wheel. Then, walking back and getting on the trailer with hay being towed by an un-manned, in-gear, tractor across a bumpy pasture with 50-100 cows jumping around in anticipation of food.

Keep in mind, the reason you are feeding hay in the winter is because it is cold/snowy/rainy/icy and you are jumping off a moving tractor (like Kevin Bacon in Footloose) while bundled up, wearing boots, wearing gloves, etc..

Then, after kicking off enough hay, or, discovering the un-guided tractor was now headed toward a ditch, creek, fence, barn, corral, neighbor's house, etc, you would jump off the trailer and run around in front of the moving tractor and climb back up on the tractor, in front of the rear wheel of the tractor. Then, you would get the tractor turned back in a "safe" direction, and jump back off the tractor, get back on the moving trailer, and start feeding again.

Yes, I survived, but, I also know of other kids that did not (a guy from my high school lost a leg from a PTO while we were in school). My friends that still farm/ranch are much more "business like" and they have to rely on adult employees to run their "business" and the only reason their kids work is "to build character" in fairly controlled tasks at young ages.

One of my biggest single fears was not being able to provide a good enough life that my kids were never forced to do some of the stupid stuff I did/was forced to do when I was younger.

Under pressure from farming advocates in rural communities, and following a report by The Daily Caller, the Obama administration withdrew a proposed rule Thursday that would have applied child labor laws to family farms.

I learned to drive a tractor at an early age on my grandad's ranch. He was always big on safety and would always make sure I was doing things properly because I was his grandkid and he had seen enough farming accidents to know that you always have to be thinking about what could go wrong. Trying to keep kids from helping out is just asking for trouble. The earlier you learn to do stuff the right way, the less likely you are to do it the wrong way and get hurt as an adult. Unfortunately accidents do happen (I got to pick up pieces of my uncles leg out of the pasture about eight years ago. He was lucky that my grandad was right there with him and put a death grip on his leg to keep him from bleeding out), but the majority of accidents I hear about involve adults. Most folks won't let kids do the more dangerous stuff when they are too young to know the consequences of making a mistake.

I imagine they would go up, although a lot of programs have the effect of supporting/elevating prices, on the whole I suspect they keep prices down.

At least I hope so, since that is/was the aim of a lot of these programs.

An aside, can't find the link, but WaPo reported that ag. accident rate has been on the decline in recent years. This makes sense as most equip. has become much, much safer (in my lifetime).

So did the article say who is going to foot the bill for this training? Did it say who was going to actual do the training? Did it say how the feds would determine if someone's child is fit to work on the farm at their own home? Will free lunches be provided? What about transportation to and from? They "provide" this stuff for kids for 35 hours a week at government owned and operated schools, so will they do the same for those who grow our nation's produce?
