True Freshman Will Start at QB for OK State

Freshman Lunt gets No. 1 QB designation atOSU

Oklahoma State football coach Mike Gundy has given the No. 1 quarterback designation to Wes Lunt, a first-year freshman from Rochester, Ill.

After leading his high school team to consecutive state championships, Lunt enrolled at Oklahoma State in January. During the spring-practice period, which concluded with last Saturday's scrimmage at Boone Pickens Stadium, the 6-foot-4, 211-pound Lunt competed against returning Cowboy quarterbacks Clint Chelf (a junior) and J.W. Walsh (a redshirt freshman).

In 2011, 28-year-old Brandon Weeden quarterbacked the Cowboys to the Big 12 championship. Lunt is 18.

After discussing the quarterback situation with offensive coordinator Todd Monken, Gundy announced his decision Thursday.

In a university new release, Gundy was quoted as saying, "We had to make a decision based on what we thought was best for our offense to score points and then give us the best chance to win football games. All three (quarterbacks) had good springs, but at some point, the decision is made on the field. . . . Wes performed better than the other two quarterbacks in the spring.”

Lunt also was quoted in the same news release: "I’m overwhelmed. It’s such a humbling experience. Coming in early, I knew I had a chance to compete for the job and to get it is just overwhelming. I know that we’re still going to compete through summer and two-a-days, so it’s not over.”

“I’m a drop-back passer a lot like Brandon Weeden," Lunt added. "I’m not going to kill you with my legs. I’m a passer.”

OSU hasn't had a first-year freshman as a quarterback starter since 1993, when Tone Jones -- a former Booker T. Washington High School star -- started for the Pat Jones-coached Cowboys. The OSU media relations office reports that a first-year freshman has not started at quarterback in a season-opening game since 1950. OSU's 2012 season begins on Sept. 1, when Savannah State visits Stillwater.

After having been recruited also by Illinois, Boston College, Iowa, Michigan State, Wisconsin and Louisville, Lunt announced his Cowboy commitment in June after an unofficial visit to the OSU campus.

During the 2010 and 2011 seasons, Lunt passed for a combined total of more than 6,100 yards while leading the Rochester Rockets to a pair of Illinois Class 4A state titles.

By the midway mark of OSU's spring-practice period, it became apparent that Lunt was the most complete passer in the program.

"He’s tall, he’s very mature, he’s got good arm strength – not great arm strength yet, obviously he’s still a high school player – but there’s a lot of development there," Gundy said. "We like his maturity and we like where he’s at in our offense, essentially still being a high school player."

While Lunt was quoted in a university news release, Gundy's media policy dictates that first-year Cowboy players are not made available for media interviews.

In the news release, Lunt indicated that OSU's spread offense was a prominent reason that he signed with the Cowboys.

"God gave me an ability to throw the ball and I’m just so blessed to be in the situation that I am," Lunt said. "I’m just overwhelmed.”

He'll probably wait to see how Lunt does in the fall. There's a good chance Walsh will get a shot at some point, unless he's 3rd on the depth chart right now.

It's going to be nice to watch OSU get punched in the face repeatedly this season, especially since a number of OSU fans I've read seem to not see it coming. And no way Walsh sticks with this development.

I think most OSU fans think we'll finish 3rd or 4th in the conference, mostly because the D is expected to be really good (barring injuries, CB is looking like 2 really good starters backed up by a ballboy). I doubt we're able to score enough points to beat the best couple of teams.

Not saying we will should be favored to repeat as champions with a freshman QB, but what basis do you have to think we will "get punched in the face repeatedly" this season? Both running backs return with Sims still in the mix. OLine will still be really good as always. Defense will be better than anytime since I've been around. We actually have a deep roster at every position. We will be good and if the new QB turns develops quickly, we could be really good. No way to predict a record with any confidence, but I say 8 or 9 wins , and maybe more, up to and including repeating as champions, if things fall into place, stay healthy, and get good QB play. Seven wins is the floor, and that will mean that something went wrong with injuries or QB just not developing.

I don't feel this Lunt is similar to that but I do think this Lunt is going to get drilled. Drop back passers against Diaz' blitz schemes don't prove to be successful very often and I cant imagine a freshman Lunt being successful v the D of Texas.
Our O-Line is very good and will give him good protection. I think our running game will keep the ball moving even if Lunt strugles. It doesn't help that it is the first conference game. I'd feel better about our chances if the OSU-Texas game was later in the year, but it's not, so it is what it is. It's a coin flip in my mind right now. Reassess after the fall and non-con schedule.

“I’m a drop-back passer a lot like Brandon Weeden," Lunt added. "I’m not going to kill you with my legs. I’m a passer.”
Somewhere in Austin, a certain Manuel Diaz is giddy with an overabundance of glee. "Let's see..." I'm certain he's saying to himself. "Let's see A) how many ways we can put them into a 3rd and long situation and B) how many special "Kill the Lunt" blitz packages I can draw up?"

I imagine a trickle of drool rolling down his chin would be noticeable from afar.

Oh and the correct name is Pymen.

Pistol I know you love your team and all, but you do understand how much pressure Gundy just put on this kid? It has to be misdirection. Even if Gundy planned to do this, why in hell would you drop the kid in the deep part of the pool when there was no need to do it. Basically a high school kid is going to break the huddle, look at the LOS, determine if he is in the correct play, and correctly identify what scheme the defense is in, pressure, coverage. Oh.. and then actually run the play? That is a handful for an experienced QB. You better have some good running backs and OL as you say because I think the young man may need them.

At the time, I couldn't figure out why we didn't go after Walsh harder. I thought he looked pretty good on film, with a strong arm, some mobility, and the ability to throw on the run.
Now, maybe why we didn't pursue him becomes a little clearer. (Or, maybe we did, and he said, "Thanks, but no thanks.")

No way to predict a record with any confidence, but I say 8 or 9 wins , and maybe more, up to and including repeating as champions, if things fall into place, stay healthy, and get good QB play. Seven wins is the floor, and that will mean that something went wrong with injuries or QB just not developing.
So you're saying you're expecting this year's OSU squad to be about equal to last years Texas squad? Who's young Master Lunt going to be throwing to this season? I honestly don't know.

We've got a pretty deep receiving corps, but as of now it doesn't look like there will be another Blackmon. Tracy Moore is experienced and Josh Stewart is a very talented slot receiver. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if we lined up Randle in the slot more this season with Smith as the RB. There is talent, just not as proven. I will say that I feel better about the WRs after Blackmon left than when Bryant left; just more talent there across the board.

The defense should be better next year (damn, I've been saying that every season since 2005) so that should help Lunt's transition, as will the run game.

I think 8 or 9 regular season wins should be expected mostly because the overall talent level has greatly improved over the last couple of seasons. Lunt will take his lumps, and facing the Texas defense in the 4th game of the season wont help, but this is a decision for the future too. By the time he is a junior, hopefully he'll be a bad ass.

But regardless of what some $#@!head OU fans think, OSU will not go back to praying for 6 or 7 wins. I don't want to sound all Aggy-like, but most people thought we were going to suck $#@! in 2010. Nobody knew that Blackmon or Weeden would be that good and part of it is a testament to the program Gundy is building.

    Flame away, Shagsters.

I'm sure their QB situation is no worse than ours.

Confucius say QB with name Lunt sound like a very small man.

    At 6'4", Lunt's no runt.

I give Gundy credit for evaluating his three (decent) QB options and then having the nutsack to pull the trigger and go with a true freshman. He could have easily gone the Politically Correct Mack 2.0 route and said that the Cowboys were blessed to have multiple good QBs, each of whom were good enough to start.

Sure, the Cowboys are likely to struggle on offense at times this Fall, but it's obvious that Gundy is making a long-term strategic decision by selecting Lunt and is thus already planting seeds for 2013 and beyond. Given Lunt's high school credentials and Gundy's own QB background, I wouldn't discount the longer-term future of this decision. If Mack and Harsin/white end up playing Brewer at all this Fall, then Lunt will already be ahead of him in terms of experience come 2013.

Yeah, it appears Gundy made the right long term call with Lunt. Winning the conf & BCS bowl last year bought Coach ImAMan at least 5 years in Stilly. His extension's signed. He's not going anywhere. If Lunt's his ideal QB for the future & Gundy thinks he can get them to 3-4th place finish with him & a decent bowl then why not? It's all gravy. Walsh's arm is better than Case's but that's about it. He's not going to throw it through any brick walls. He's got a 3/4 delivery & though he's definitely got wheels, he's not likely to win them more games in '12 than Lunt will.

Gundy has a track record of producing some sick QB's not name Bobby Reid.

As for OSU's defense getting better...there's nowhere to go but up. And I'm not sure OSU's passing offense will cause teams to under man fronts to the benefit of OSU's run game this year. It's all well conceived, but you've got to have the horses. That happens to be a lesson that UT fans are quite tired of learning.

Interesting that Gundy being 40 and a man would pick a young Lunt for the spread.

So they just got 10 years younger at the QB spot?

I sense a strong possibility that the '12 season for okie lite is going to hit the ground like a plane crash. Can the Lunt pull it out in time? We'll see.

So did anyone actually watch OSU play last year? Their defense is and has been good. Bill Young is a terrific coach.

I was under the impression that they couldn't stop an all female retirement home offense, but they might turn them over quite a bit and use their elite offense to score. I.e. Without their offense operating at a very high level theyd be in a lot of trouble. Is that incorrect?

And yes Young is a good coach.

  48. #48
It is incorrect. They do give up a lot of yards, they are a bend-but-don't-break outfit and they are on the field a lot because of the O. But their per-play metrics are outstanding and they play fast and tackle well.

If they had a slower paced offense, they'd be a top 25 unit by traditional standards. I like watching them play, even without elite talent they gang up on you and knock the piss out of people.

I don't think OSU will be garbage next year, but their offense does ask a lot from the QB.

I would put them below UT, OU, WVU, TCU and maybe KSU.

    http://www.adjustedstats.com/ratings...am=Oklahoma+St.

Per play they were #55 in yardage allowed, but adjusted yards per play was #29. Their pass defense was excellent (#12) but their run defense was not (#63).
