Bunch of $#@! nerds on this site.
Bunch of $#@! nerds on this site.
I'm addicted to paper, rock, scissors. First thing i do when i meet a girl BAM? PRS. If i lose, she cheated. Not much of a hobby as it is a lifestyle.
Maps are badass.
Im glad to see fellow autistics so heavely represented
Tracking hurricanes, storms.
Maps and atlases. I like comparing old topographic maps with the current google maps image.
Going to Heavens-above.com and locating satellite passing by.
Taking my telescope out during the day and trying to identify the airline producing a contrail. Then I go to flightaware to see if i'm right.
i like to have sex while watching the history channel.
I played Magic: The Gathering in middle school back in the mid-90s. Maybe bought a total of 10-15 packs of cards since then till a few months ago. A co-worker of mine still collects them, and I dug my old cards out of the closet. It's kind of getting me back into the game and the collecting aspect of the game. I like the gamble of buying packs and hoping I get one of the rare expensive cards of the set. Probably hold them for a bit, then try and sell them at their peak.
I brew beer, keg it and drink it.
I restore and ride vintage Italian motorscooters.
I collect 1960s Hot Wheels and Matchbox cars.
I collect old maps.
Huge model car nerd. Revell and I go way back.
Like F18Mustang, I'm addicted to Microsoft Flight Simulator. I've poured $$$$ into that game to make it as real as possible. It's basically my outlet to live out my dream of being a commercial pilot.
Google earth is the tits. Loved messing around with GIS in the class I took in college. Wikipedia is equally titsy. I tend to go on a Wikipedia binge at least once a week.
I walk around staring at the ground. Every once in a while I pick up a cool looking rock so that I can say that I am a rockhound and my family won't think that I am insane. (I am, but they don't need to know.)
I also love to get on my old Tripmaker software and plan out trips all over the US that I would like to take with my wife. I would have to live 300 years to take all of the trips that I have planned out.
It has been a long time, but I used to build all kinds of model military aircraft and vehicles. I still have a bunch of unbuilt models that will probably make my kids a bit of money after I die.
Movies about space.
AD&D (if you know what that means, you are indeed a nerd).
Zeroing my rifle.
Another google earth person, here. I love history and geography.
I'll look up a random city or region around the world on Wikipedia. I'll read the page, then look at it through street view on google earth, then look at photos of the place on Flickr. It gives you a really good sense of what it would be like if you visited there.
I play TT (ping pong) pretty much every workday. I work in software development so there is a ton of Indian and Chinese nationals who are bad ass and I have gotten to where I can beat almost every one. On Friday's after work sometimes, we will have a big 16 seed tournament that lasts hours. I try not to go out on the town as much, but since I'm imperfect I still do, only I will now make sure I go to Bracket's (Bar in Dallas next to the Palomar hotel where Trader Vic's used to be- it has TT tables) before getting black out.
Also, a guy I used to work with used to be a big time Larper. One day, he opened a door to a 1992 Ford Explorer and homemade armor and weaponry made of foam and electric tape fell out, it was so stuffed to the gills. I knew Larp from Shaggy and started asking him questions about it and, I guess I came off a bit condescending or skeptical in tone or something, but he ended up challenging me to a battle. I have no doubt in my mind the lamest thing I have ever done was fake fight this nerd at 2pm in a public park next to a major road (Forest/Medical City) for everyone to see. Oh and he kicked my ass.
C'mon.. There has to be at least on Civil War reenactor on the shag.
found out that you can get an online Marvel Comics subscription that gives you access to thousands of comics for like $60/yr and have read about 1,200 in the past 15 months or so.
Also a huge music nerd, in the sense that I am pretty much constantly scouring the internet for different and weird music and downloading it, playing it the $#@! out and then moving on.
There's a Civil War trench in the woods behind my house, and I've found bits of cannonballs and other random artifacts out there. That trench was a great place to play soldier as a kid, but there's no way in hell either one of us would be a re-enactor. There are some interesting folks involved, but it's a bit cultish and weird. I will give them this, they are fanatical sticklers for detail down to what they eat, and put on a pretty amazing show. I've been around it my whole life, so I tend to forget what an interesting and important landmark is virtually in my backyard.
Thanks. I spent probably 40 hrs on that damn thing, and got an ahh nice from the wife. Then one night I cut her name out of pine, total time 10 mins, and she thought I $#@!ing cured fake cancer.
Ever since I took an astronomy class to fill a science cred, I've been fascinated with cosmology.
I have always loved reading world news and learning about other cultures.
Because I've seen most of the decent US tv/movies on Netflix, I've become addicted to documentaries(unless its an obvious propaganda piece for whatever group).
And British gangster movies for some reason.
I didn't realize the Wiki Train was nerdy. I thought it was what everyone does who remotely looks at Wikipedia.
I guess the nerdiest thing I have is love of Harry Potter. I do love maps. I can really just get interested in anything by reading about it.
NY Times crossword. Every day. I'm good Sunday thru Thursday. I can do 50-75% on Friday, depending. Saturday is a disaster.
I used to read nothing but Civil War books and literature, but have gotten away from it. While I was into it, I gave a very brief thought to re-enacting, but damned if I am going to eay hard tack and bully beef.
Any you may have had the coolest backyard ever.
like many others, i enjoy geogrpahy/topography (former imagery analyst in the army), physics, space, learning about other cultures, wikipedia, debating/arguing...
i have also been known to catch critters like camel spiders and scorpions and subject them to death match tournaments. hey look, its the natural order of things and one of them was prolly gonna eat the other anyway. im just watching the action.
ATHF, sealab 2021 (before they switched the captains then canceled the show all together)
i have a dream of buying the ghostbuster's car, Ecto 1 some day.
i would like to take up the hobby of woodworking/carpentry. my father in law and i will be building my daughter a bookshelf whenever we figure out where we would put one for her in the house...
i would also like to have a pet lion. (dude, you can get by a dog; but no one $#@!s with a lion kid) i think that is about all i can think of for now.
I post on message boards, though I'm only active on 2 currently.
golf, playing board games with my kids & cards with my parents, watching old tv shows is a growing addiction ($#@!ing metv .... mayberry, petticoat junction, beverly hillbillys, green acres $#@!)
oh and the original star trek tv series.
Basketball cards (Putting together the 2003 Exquisite rookie set but will never finish it because of the cost of the LeBron,Carmelo,Wade cards)
Back to The Future
When I was a kid, baseball cards. Then in college, between parties, sat in the basement of my dorm, smoking ganja and playing AD&D. FWIW, I am that guy, the one that got along with the nerds, the jocks, the preps, etc and took turns hanging out with each group. Read a metric $#@!ton, mostly sci-fi/fantasy/satire. Write a fantasy series, when I can buckle down long enough to do it. Post here and run WoollyAl. Play a castle sim and a fantasy BBMMORPG online.
just remembered...when i moved out of gov't housing when stationed in hawaii i used to play eve. its an online game about space and stuff.
i also like the "hutch" series by jack mcdevitt. the first book is titled "The Engines of God" started the first book in iraq, got half way through then got medivac'd. when i got here i decided to pick the book back up and found out about the sequels. got them all and have since read them all. its just nice to read something and for my mind to not be here if i cant be at home with my wife and daughter.
Pretty sure RamJetFDO has us all beat in the nerd department. He could chair the meetings.
WoW and I still have Pokemon Red and Blue roms on my laptop.
