Thread: Hulu gets worse

    Hulu gets worse

Hulu racked up some $420 million in ad revenue last year and is expected to do well in this year’s ad negotiations. But the move toward authentication, which could take years to complete, will make cable companies happy because it could slow cord-cutting by making cable subscribing more attractive

That's bull$#@!. "Hey, someone came up with a better way to distribute content and is taking our subscribers. Let's figure out a way to force them to get this back."

Only question is what does Hulu get from this?

Yeah, instead of deciding to buy cable or satellite, I'm just going to stop using hulu.

Dittos on the sports. The wife & family love DTV, so I'm getting it, but I watch Netflix & Amazon Prime & not Hulu cause Hulu is still the same stupid ass commercials I refuse to watch on TV.
Whenever I turn on TV now it's like sitting down and reading everything in my junk mail folder.

When I first heard of Hulu, I didn't think it had a chance. Then they built a straight-forward interface with minimal restrictions and mostly unobtrusive ads, which made it reasonably successful. So of course, the content owners decided to smother it with a pillow. These guys really are the masters of tripping on their own $#@!s.

I realize the "f cable" refrain is a popular one, but for the money, cable/sat is really, really cheap for what it provides.

Also, for the cord-cutting stuff above, there isn't much of that happening. Video subs have netted forward every quarter since forever. Sure some have gone to phone or sat, but that will swing back to cable at some point and it looks like that is getting close.

Agreed on the old media/new media issues and these guys not getting it, in any event.

Don't you have to pay for Hulu now? I can see requiring authentication if it is free, but if you are paying for it? $#@! that noise.

There is Hulu and Hulu Plus. Hulu is still free but shows have more of a delay before becoming available and certain things are not available at all, unless you have Plus.

I primarily use Hulu as a backup for my dvr, just in case of bad weather, power outages, $#@! that delays start time of my shows.

Pretty much the same for me. I only use Hulu when I have too many things conflicting on my DVR. Time Warner only allows me to DVR 2 things at once, but I have to be watching one of them. This becomes a problem occasionally and during Thursday and Sunday nights when there is too much good stuff all at once. I would never pay for it.

I would be fine with it if they made every episode of every show ever available for me to watch whenever I wanted

I don't have a tv, or cable, or a dish. Hulu has been good because I can still watch the shows I like. I'd go to Hulu+ if I had to, but I'm never going to get cable or satellite. At that point I'll just put energy into torrents, etc. Bastards.

This has become such a huge deal over the last 2 days when all the articles state that it's several years away at best. Some douchebag at Death+Taxes penned this whole "RIP Hulu" article which is a bit premature.

Hell with Hulu, one can Torrent an MKV of almost anything one wants and have it within 24 hrs of its original air date, then stream it wirelessly to a PS3. No ads, no subscriptions, etc. If one were to miss something on the DVR or there's a problem with the recording, that's how one could handle it. If one were so inclined.

Works great for movies that aren't available to stream via Netflix or buy PPV. Let's say for instance someone got a wild hair and wanted to see Apollo 13 last week; that person probably could have had the MKV downloaded in a few hours in time to watch that very evening. Hypothetically speaking.
