It's a speed limit. Limit is the MAX you can go. A road that has a minimum in almost all cases is already banned for cyclists.

We as society should protect those that are more vulnerable just like we would a pedestrian or a kid getting off a bus.

IMO you run a light and get killed your bike should be sold to pay for damage to the car that killed you.
you can get a ticket for going below the speed limit.

Who said people were going to ride them everywhere? Portland is denser partly because they have worked to make it so over the past few decades. Austin is dense enough in the actual Austin area for more bike lanes to make sense.

Yes, for impeding or obstructing traffic, which is what cyclists on 2-lane no-shoulder highways do all the time.

Not exactly the same. Driving 10 mph when you easily can go faster, just to piss off other drivers would qualify. Going 15-20 mph on a bike because that's as fast as you can go, would not. Easily solved situation with the addition of a bike lane.

As you can see on this thread, many drivers express animosity towards cyclists. And there are those who attempt to "buzz" them and pass by as close as possible. Sometimes they end up striking the cyclist. So when it's shown a driver could have given a cyclist a wide berth, I could see invoking a stiffer penalty.

I've yet to see anyone ticketed on either end for the three-feet law, but I've seen many more cyclists break it than cars.

Or the cyclists could just take a safer alternate route where they aren't going 50% less than the speed limit. I constantly get stuck behind a guy riding his bike on Burnet Road. There are plenty of other routes he could take that would make the road safer for drivers and him alike. Apparently he doesn't give a $#@!. I am of the opinion he can't turn around and ask us to give a $#@! in return.

To get respect, you gotta give respect.

Yeah, I'm harping on it, because it's the whole goddamned issue. Coasting to the front of a line of traffic, so you can be at the front going 10 mph when the light turns green? Running a stop sign? Passing a car on the right as it's paused at an intersection getting ready to turn right (making him either wait for you to pass him illegally, or swerve to avoid you because he never expected a vehicle to pass him on the right)? Riding 4 abreast, making it impossible to pass you? Failing to signal, thus requiring a car to take evasive action to avoid you after you turn? None of those are respectful, yet they are closer to the RULE than they are the exception. Seriously, I actually take note of it when a cyclist signals his intention, and I make room for him to make his move. He just GAVE respect, so now he GETS my respect.

I would STRONGLY suggest that if a cyclist is riding on a road with a speed limit over 45 mph, he should be required to have a license, have taken a class on bicycle safety and traffic laws, and pay a registration fee for same. And, if he violates a traffic law, because a violation puts him at INFINITELY greater risk than if he was in a car, his license be suspended.

I really enjoy the cyclists on South Mopac/45 who ride as far left in the bike lane that they get into the car lane. Then the flip you the bird because you are too close to them. I change lanes to the left lane when possible, but it's not always possible. Cyclists get there bike lane and don't use it. Awesome.

Yeah. I don't judge cyclists cause of them. Unlike other posters, I don't care that many cyclists run a stop sign or whatever. I just think that many cyclists need to be reminded that others are surrounded by 4000 lbs of plastic and metal, and that is makes sense to defer to cars. I may have the right of way when walking, but I defer to cars. I think parks with a bike lane and walking path are great. Better to keep people healthy and safe when we can. But first Houston needs to fix is roads.

I can agree with that. I don't have a big problem with cyclists if they wouldn't ask for special treatment like this. Like the example I gave above and Hellraiser's response - if a guy is driving 10 mph in a 45mph road, and there is no passing, you would get pissed off after having to be behind him for a while. So I think cyclists would gain a lot of goodwill in this situation if they would just pull over and stop for a second to let motorists pass safely.

How is it " operating on a totally different frequency as originally intended " given that cycling has always been legal on roads?

The speed limit itself is irrelevant. Trust me, there's absolutely no problem of bicyclists speeding on any road in Austin.

But the speed limit is important in that it generally establishes the flow of traffic. Thus, on a road with a posted speed limit of 45 MPH, it's safe to assume that the flow of traffic will normally be around 45 MPH. A conveyance that cannot travel anywhere close to the posted speed limit will obstruct the flow of traffic, creating an unsafe condition for motorists and for the obstructing conveyance.

Same can be said of drivers though too. Just because your car can go faster than my bike doesn't give you the right to illegally pass me or make it illegal for me to ride on the same road. Drivers are demanding special treatment as well.

since when have many cyclists ever cared about creating unsafe conditions or regard to other cars on the road? as shown on this thread, the cyclist's mindset is that everyone has to make accommodations for them, and not the other way around.

Sounds like most of the drivers feel the same way. They can't be bothered to slow down and make it safe for everyone. Too much of a hurry I guess.

yes i demand special treatment. i demand that you obey traffic laws and not pass standing cars at a red light, who you already inconvenienced by having to pass you, so that they have to pass you again when the light turns green.

I see bicycle lanes, marked bike paths, and wide sidewalks all over town, yet I still see people riding bicycles on roads that are parallel to a road with a bicycle lane, roads that have wide sidewalks, etc. Would you support a law banning people from bicycling on the road if there are bicycle lanes or sidewalks available?

Bikes should never be on sidewalks IMO, its a hazard to people walking and actually a hazard to the cyclists themselves (to many obstructions). I wouldn't ban people on any road from bikes because I don't think you should have to get off your bike and walk it two blocks or whatever over to get to your destination. I would add bike lanes to more roads.

You sound pretty self righteous to me. I'm more than willing to share the road, its you that have a problem for some reason. Car drivers cause plenty of problems with other cars on the road though, happens every day (tailgating, cutting people off, running red lights, etc.)

My antipathy towards the cycling "cause" grew not from my experience as a driver, but my experience as a pedestrian on campus. Bikes are an annoyance when you're in a car, but they're a major threat when you're on foot. I've seen cyclists take people out on the sidewalk and I had to pull an olé on a cyclist near Jester once as he came careening towards me. (He got a few nice gashes as a result, but I'll be $#@!ing damned if I take a bike wheel to the nuts to protect him.)

I love it when cyclists use hand signals. It makes me feel like there's order and meaning in the world, but that's extremely rare.

If traffic is moving at 45 MPH and there's something in the middle of the road moving under 15 MPH, it's not safe. I don't care whether that "something" in the middle of the road is a bicycle, a jogger, or a pickup towing a string of cars to Mexico by rope. It creates an unsafe condition.

It's perfectly safe, the problem is drivers that get annoyed at driving 15 MPH. THEY make it unsafe by freaking out about driving so slow.

School zones aren't unsafe and most of them have higher speed limits outside of them.

It's like throwing snorkelers and dingy's at the mouth of shipping lanes or allowing cessnas to at will at ABIA while enforcing strict penalties on commercial craft for not giving the cessnas enough space. It's like Running the bulls at Pamplona and being surprised when there are injuries

Not really. ABIA is built for commercial craft specifically. Ships in shipping lanes can't even see snorkelers and dingys and have no ability to stop.

So why aren't school zones massively dangerous?

The simple fact is that if both cyclists and drivers obeyed the law, there wouldn't be any problems, but there are $#@!s in both group that make it unsafe.

Not really. Having bikes whizing through pedestrians is very dangerous, hence why it is generally not allowed.

That probably has something to do with it, but if drivers pay attention to the traffic flow around them, slow downs aren't any more dangerous or unexpected.

Don't want bikes on the road? Fund more dedicated bike lanes. Otherwise STFU.

School zones are marked by signs and flashing lights. Also, they don't move, so if a school zone is along the path of a driver's daily commute, the driver knows what to expect. Finally, if someone enters a school zone without realizing it, he can slowly adjust his speed. But if a bicycle appears out of nowhere, the driver must slam on his brakes to avoid hitting the bicycle.

I have no problem with bikes on roads as long as they follow the traffic laws, don't create obstructions, and don't expect special treatment if they get injured by traveling among cars with little protection.

You are one dense mofo. For a school zone, I get a goddamned SIGN telling me it's coming up. When I crest the hill near my house, I get no SIGN telling me "hey, on this large road, there will likely be a car going 45 mph . . . but there MIGHT be a bike going 15 mph" -- I simply crest the hill, and there he is.

"Slow downs aren't any more dangerous or unexpected." Geezis. Slowdowns are a significant danger WITHOUT bikes, because they are UNPREDICTABLE. I have seen many an accident caused by traffic coming to an unexpected stop/significant slowdown. It is a HUGE increase in risk of a collision. When a highway slows down because of an accident ahead, or what have you, that is empirically one of the riskiest situations on the road. When it happens because of a bike poking along in a main traffic lane . . . same risk.

$#@! it. I mean, if we want to be safe, we might as well just change the speed limits on all our roads to 15 mph. Gotta keep them cyclists safe.

    A few facts:
    - I ride my bike to and from work almost every day
    - I ride my bike to most bars, parks, events, etc within a 5-mile radius of my house (assuming there is a safe path to get there)
    - I ride as if I am a vehicle and try to maintain near-traffic speeds
    - I stop at every stop light, stop sign, signal turns, get behind cars when stopped (as opposed to shooting to the front of the line)
    - I am about the most cautious rider ever because I now a car can end me at any moment
    - My wife and I own 1 car between us and I use it about 10% of the time

Having said all that I $#@!ing know I am in the minority. I yell at people all the time doing stupid $#@!. I know as a car-oriented society the shift toward more bike-friendly roadways will take time. That said, it's time to start cracking down on $#@! bike riders. But it's also time to crack down on people endangering cyclists who are riding correctly and safely.

Did you know if you pass a cyclist you have to give them at least 4 feet? All the time people pass me and could reach out with my shoulder and touch their rear view mirror. That's endangering my life. If I were a less competent rider I would have had a lot more accidents than I have.

Did you know as a cyclists I am entitled to take the entire right lane if there is a not a bike lane? People all the time are honking and yelling at me to to move over when I am in the right lane of a multi-lane road. It's dangerous for someone to hug the curb and expect that a car can get by them with out moving into the left lane. Sorry, bud, I'm allowed to be here. Again, if 30mph is not fast enough for you, kindly go around. Sorry to have cheated you out of those precious 15 seconds out of your surely busy day.

These types of things happen as often as car drivers see cyclists break laws. There is give and take in this. The solution? Ticket the $#@! out of people. If I knew I'd get a $150 fine for slow-rolling through a stop sign then my ass is stopping. Sure, it's more energy to stop, but I also like what little money I have. I like the idea of regulating it as a mode of transport. If you are going to ride on the road you should have a license and should be held to the same standard as a car. Period.

I think before too long this will be a mostly moot conversation, though. Things are already changing.
