Best way to rent a car in SFO

Going to SFO in a month for vacation, how is priceline for bidding on car rental prices? I've used it for hotels with pretty good results, but want to get some Shaggy travel expertise before I make that plunge.

are there better websites for getting cheap car rentals? any companies to specifically avoid out of SFO?

    thanks

I love Priceline for renting cars. Just make sure you know what the local tax rates are for rental cars before you bid.

At IAH my taxes usually end up being 100% of the total cost of the rental for a weekend. So my $12 per day bid ends up actually costing about $50 for the weekend.

Another note about SFO, if you're spending any full days in the city I would avoid renting a car during those days. You're talking about $50+ a day just to park your car, and driving is a gigantic pain in the ass. Public transit is the way to go. Then if you have any day trips planned out to Napa or whatever, you can rent a car for only those days, save some money.

Sage advice here. If you're staying the city having a car is a pain. If you book away from the airport than you obviously don't have to pay those additional fees. If you end up booking at the airport, Budget is usually the cheapest but they're offsite and it takes about 10 minutes to get there by bus.

just got back the other day. we were staying in San Rafael and Sonoma, so parking wasn't a concern. I looked at a bunch of different options (used to have good luck with Priceline, but didn't this go round). Ended up going with Alamo and got a decent Malibu for 4 days and it cost about 90 bucks. Took the tram from the airport to the rental area and were out of there in 10 minutes.

I spent two days in SF driving a pinche expedition. Didn't have problems parking, but I also didn't go to the main tourist areas, and I stayed up in sonoma county.

I'll be heading up to north Sonoma county, so no worries on SF parking.

Raizer, that seems like a pretty decent rate, what was that per day before taxes?. I'll need a car for 6 days, and if I spend less than $150 I consider that a big WIN.

17.40/day for a "standard" class vehicle. I was just browsing their site and they had some sale going on for that particular weekend. Not sure if it is still going on or not. Other nice thing there is you pick out of an aisle of cars. Not a whole lot of variety, but still nice to have a little say in what you roll in.

There's a really good rental place called Critical Mass. You should give them a call.
