    the aroldis chapman appreciation thread

i know there's a meta thread, i know there's reds thread, but this guy needs his own $#@!.

he is now 4-0 with a 0.00 era. he also has 6 holds and 2 saves.

he has been in 20 games and thrown 24.1 innings.

in those 20 games, 9 times he threw 1 inning, with 0 hits, 0 walks and 2k.

of the remaining 11, four of those times, he pitched 2 innings. in those 8 innings, he has 16 strikeouts.

of 88 batters faced, he has struck out 41.

he keeps anything close to this up, he's gonna be in cy young discussions, at the very least.

with their terrible starters, they can't keep him in the bullpen if he's gonna keep this up.

is it odd to anyone else that this stat covers the last 90 years, but all of these happened in the last 15, and half of them in the past 3 (2.5) seasons?

not really when you consider the proliferation of specialty pitchers (i.e. closers). Helluva lot easier to have a higher K % when you only have to face a batter once as opposed to 2 to 4 times if you were a starter routinely going 7+ innings like they did in the old days.

....I did enjoy seeing Wagner on that list 3 times, and 12 years apart.

I wonder what late 90's/early 2000's Pedro martinez would have done as a closer.

obviously the invention of the save and the birth of the specialty guys, the closers, and the subsequent huge contracts that followed have everything to do with it, but you would've thought someone would sneak through. where is the goose when i need him?

    fair enough...I agree.

Then again, to put those %'s in perspective, Nolan Ryan's best season was 31%. Of course, being the all-time BB leader doesn't help that stat.

However, even in the years he led the league in WHIP, he was [i[only[/i] around 30%

    Yes, yes he would have.

As it were, he STILL managed 37% and 35% in 1999 & 2000 in 213 and 217 IP.

You can argue that Pedro's 1999 or 2000 season (can't remember which) is the greatest for a pitcher all time. He led the league in ERA and I think was more than two runs lower than the #2 guy.

if you wanna know what pedro would've done only having to pitch 1-2 innings, go look at what he did at some of those all-star games.

i'm blanking on who it was in some interview, asking about pedro's stuff in the fenway game (i think). he struck out looking, and they asked him why he didn't swing, and he said, "what's the point?"

I'm honestly surprised they haven't tried to convert him into a starter yet this year. I understand how important it is to have a strong bullpen guy (i.e. Ogando), but damn. If he's throwing THIS WELL, you want him going 7 strong every fifth day.

he should probably be starting now, but it is absolutely retarded that he isn't at the very least their everyday closer by now (should have begun the year as the closer if they want him in the pen).

The only reason he isn't starting is because with Bill Bray hurt, Logan Ondrusek would be the only left-handed 'Pen Option. Once Bray is healthy, I believe Chapman will replace Bailey in the rotation.

From John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer: "Aroldis Chapman was OK going on back-to-back days. 1-2-3 ninth, 12 pitches, two strikeouts. His updated line: 24 1/3 innings, 7 hits, 7 walks, 43 strikeouts. That’s just silly."

I was at a Cardinals - Reds game last year. Cards were up big and they brought in Chapman to get some work because he hadn't thrown in a few days. I got all excited but then he only hit 99 mph. Perhaps he wasn't completely loose, or the gun was a bit off.

    His ERA vs National League is 0.18 (45g, 49.2ip, 17h, 2r, 1er, 13bb, 96k, 0hr).

And that was before today's perfect 9th. Add 1 IP and 2 K to those stats.
