    Best Router for console gaming

What is the best router for wired console gaming? Is there a specific router that is generally agreed as best?

I have a Linksys WR610N now and a great internet connection. I just want to be able to play COD and not lag! I have tried and tried to get open ports and whatnot to achieve NAT type 3, but can't get better than type 2. It's $#@!ing complicated and the only instructions to do so are random youtube videos. Thanks!!

    a great internet connection
Maybe. Most people just run speedtest and assume that their connection is fine, but lag in online gaming is often caused by routing issues between your ISP and the game servers, not between your router and your modem. Bypass the router and plug your PS3 directly into your modem to make sure you don't have latency issues with no router. I wouldn't worry about security for a quick test.

And what is NAT type 3? I don't think address translation type can be adding to your latency.

Kinda agree with the internet connection. I have FIOS and can count on my hands how many times I've lagged out of a game.

Whatever comes with my ATT is working fine on X-Box as I have that one on wireless, and I have my PS3 plugged directly to the modem.

I'll try that and see if it works. I'm not sure what NAT type 3 means, but when you do a internet connection test through the PS3 it will tell you your up and down speed and determine whether you are NAT 1, 2 or 3. With 3 being the best. I'm like 29 down and 3 up with NAT 2. When playing COD, it says if your NAT is strict, moderate or open. I'm always moderate on MW3. On MW2 I was occasionally open and when so the connection was much, much better. I don't understand why it has to be so complicated!

Ok, I think I get this. NAT type 1, 2, and 3 indicate how you are connected to the Internet. NAT 1 = PS3 uses public IP, so no NAT ie plugged directly into your modem. NAT 2 is typical and means you are behind a router that is performing NAT for you and PS3 has an internal, non-routable IP. NAT 3 means you have a connection problem or firewall restriction, so that's bad.

In-game NAT is what you are talking about. Strict means that there are two PS3s on the network sharing the PSN port, OR you have outdated NAT entries in your modem or your router's ARP table. So if you are getting Strict NAT and don't have multiple PS3s on your network, reboot your gateway/router.

Moderate seems a bit more unclear, but it could mean you don't have your inbound ports forwarded, or your fw/isp are blocking inbound communication. It sounds like it could be caused by your router, but if you are sometimes "open" and sometimes "moderate", I'm betting it's being caused by upstream latency.

"Open" is obviously the ideal setting as you have sufficient inbound and outbound bandwidth to host the session for other members to join.
