Mark Appel once again proving why he's likely a top five pick on Monday.

    Just went CG vs Fresno...4 hits, 1 ER, 2 BB, 11 K - Stanford wins 9-1

He's now 10-1 on the year....

A potential Super Regional matchup with Stanford @ Florida State is shaping up to be pretty badass.

Interesting that both Baylor (Turley) and A&M (Wacha) went with their #1 starter against the 4 seed.

Confidence in the strength of the staff or confidence in winning the Regional and keep your normal rotation ? Thus, keep same rotation for Super Regional.

I watched many games today on ESPN and ESPN3. We definitely did not deserve to make a Regional. Major overhaul is needed.

Oregon just scored two in the bottom of the 9th to beat 4-seed Austin Peay 6-5.

Very interesting, Stanford went with thier ace too, granted A&M, BU, & Stanford all have number two starters that are a Friday guy at 90% of the programs in the country.

Really sucks for Baylor, puts them in a bad spot to win 4 straight with Turley likely used up..

UCLA threw Plutko last night as well (beat Creighton 3-0)

interesting that so many number 1's strayed from the normal strategy this year.

Stanford would own them. Florida State = biggest chokers in college baseball. if there's one thing that's almost as sure as death and taxes it's FSU losing before Omaha.

Edit: To be fair, Stanford is loaded and losing to them wouldn't be a choke, per se.

Well maybe not before Omaha, FSU has been there 20 times (I believe is 5th all-time) and twice in the last 4 years....but certainly FSU is in the all-time world champion in terms of underachieving by not winning a title equivalent to the talent that's gone through there.

But I would also favor Stanford in that series, not necessarily based on any past results, but simply because FSU hasn't played it's best baseball down the stretch while Stanford has gotten hot (won 10 of 12) but seeing Jayce Boyd & James Ramsey go up against that Stanford pitching staff would be worth the price of admission.

I kind of feel for Mike Martin sometimes, he seems like a good guy and a good coach, very well respected among other coaches, just never seems to get over the hump.

Yeah he appears to be like Osborne was in that regard for football. Lots of very good teams but never great until he won 3 (two and a half according to Michigan fans) himself.

Rice started a bullpen pitcher vs PVAMU. But then the Rice season has been marked by starters giving up early runs with the bullpen coming in to shut things down. In multiple games, the bullpen has pitched 9 or more innings of shutout ball to give the offense long enough to catch up. On average, the Owls have allowed .47 runs per inning in the first 4 innings vs .27 over the last 5.

Arkansas vs Rice is probably the best matchup of the day, followed by Fullerton/Oregon

I would include Oregon State/LSU in there as well, but with Gausman throwing I'd call that scratch.

You mean just because they're 4-9 in the SR era, while only having had to travel 4 times (1 regional, which they lost, and 3 SRs)?

Pretty much. It's not that I have anything against the school, in fact I like them way better than Miami or the Gators, but facts are facts. They lost to Aggy at home in a super last year for $#@!'s sake and I knew they would lose.

I really think that whoever comes out between Arkansas and Rice has a good chance of going to Omaha and I would have said this before Baylor lost yesterday.

I still think that Baylor has enough offense and back end arms to fight through that regional - will be a battle though

My 8 for Omaha before yesterday was Florida, UVA, Stanford, LSU, Baylor, UCLA, Arizona, Purdue....so I'm gonna stick with that (at least for one more day - HA)

I will say that Rob Walton has to be at the point where if he wants the OSU job it's gotta be his...what a job he's doing.

Mine would have been much the same haha except that I think I would have gone with the $#@!s instead of UVA and either Arky or Rice instead of Baylor.

Too $#@!ing funny. Looks like Miami is two and done. $#@! the Canes

And just saw your second post. Even funnier.

I remember seeing Missouri State live at the CWS in 2003 and sort of liked those guys. Good to see.

Interesting quote I read from the San Jose news from last nights Stanford/Fresno game....

This time the 6-foot-5, 215-pound right-hander out of Houston lost his shutout bid in the seventh inning, but with his fastball touching 97 miles per hour on the radar gun Appel limited the Bulldogs (30-27) to four hits and two walks in a complete-game effort while striking out 11 -- three shy of his collegiate high.

"He had the answer," said Fresno State coach Mike Batesole, who noted Appel relied less on his fastball in the rematch. "I'm pretty sure he could have won a big-league game today. That was fantastic the way he was able to pitch backwards when he wanted to."

Jim Morris is an excellent baseball coach (2 national titles) but that's now 4 straight years without an Omaha appearance, that's the longest CWS drought for Miami in over 30 years.

    Makes you wonder...

In all seriousness, I do respect the Miami baseball program and yes Morris is an excellent baseball coach. But you do have to wonder if his time is done.

I agree, plus the quick rise to dominance of O'Sullivan and UF, FSU being a top 10 team most years, and UCF being an up and coming program now in that state...it's gotta start creeping into the conversation.

IMO Miami is college baseball royalty (one of the top handful of programs of all time) and they won't accept this for too long.

I noticed it when it happened, and I thought it was a pretty obvious call. Too bad Jack Leggett had to be a $#@! about it.

That's a team that quit on their coach, and you can try to blame the kids all you want, but it's the coach's responsibility.

When you get the equivalant of run-ruled on your home field by an inferior opponent to end your season (after the committee had gift wrapped you a Regional)

Yep agreed, that goes without saying its on the coach.

Again makes me wonder if Morris hasn't gotten a bit complacent
