Okay, to set some obvious rules, it has to be rated 'G' or 'PG' to be considered a children's movie.
My top four in no particular order:
The Never Ending Story
Labyrinth
The Last Unicorn
The Secret of NIMH
Whatcha Got?

Don't let the cover fool you. $#@!ing dark, harrowing tale of the American immigrant.
Really? I don't recall this one being very dark but then again I don't recall it very much at all.![]()
It wasn't dark but it was racist as $#@!. It's so racist that Disney permanently pulled it from the rotation. I saw it when I was about 5 and I'd love to see it one more time, but I'm pretty sure it isn't on video.
My vote is the original Wonka movie with Gene Wilder. Not dark, but a little twisted.

I was going to post that as well. I haven't seen it since I was in elementary school, but I remember it giving me a creepy feeling back then... would be interesting to see it now as an adult.
Just checked Netflix- it's available for streaming... might have to watch it this weekend.
Secret of NIMH
Black Cauldron
Transformers (cartoon)
All Dogs Go to Heaven
You think? I never caught on to the darkness when I was a kid. The darkness was so buried under bright colors, candy, humor, and the most kick ass thing I'd seen in a movie since Dopey (oompa loompas, duh) that the darkness went right over my head. after reading the book as a teenager, I realized just how $#@!ed up that whole movie is. $#@!ed up = awesome.
Due to some problems with my computer, I cannot see a couple of the images, so sorry if someone already mentioned it, but the Wizard of Oz. Dorothy killing witches left and right. Scamming wizard. And damn those flying monkeys, damn them to hell!
But it does have one of the greatest lines in any movie, from any time period: Scarecrow, "Some people go this way. (Points) And some people go this way. (Points other way.) Of course, some people go both ways." Laughed my ass off when I was 16 and finally got that.
According to the Goiter it would have to be ESB
I thought this part of Pinocchio was $#@!ing terrifying

Anything based on a Roald Dahl story is a given, even though the movies are less disturbing than the books.
I think this one is underappreciated on both fronts:

And Howl's Moving Castle too.
wizard of oz
old yeller
eraserhead
Where the Red Fern Grows was also on the dark side but like every other kid, I read the book first.
Oz
Wonka
Alice in Wonderland
Where the Wild Things Are
Pinocchio was pretty damn scary.
Speaking of which, how big of a spoiler was it that they put Peter Pettigrew in the poster? That was stupid.
The Yearling, too.
Right, because only a child would watch a film with David Thewlis, Gary Oldman, Maggie Smith, Michael Gambon and Alan Rickmon.
I mean for Christ's sake, it was directed by Alfonso Cuaron. Get over yourself.
Edit: BTW, I can tell from the GoT thread that you and I are both the kind of people who've spent hours reading about a girl who owns dragons and a boy who's getting ready to fight ice monsters. So how grown up is that?

Child's Play. It scared the hell out of me when I was 9.
