    Camera and photography advice

    so my Canon point and shoot crapped out in December. finally went and bought a new camera and I'm foto buff but wanted to get something better than point and shoot but not a DSLR.....I opted for the Nikon J1.

    it comes with a 10mm f/2.8 pancake and a standard 10mm-30mm lens.

    I like that it reached for DSLR but doesn't exactly deliver, but def goes way above standard P&S.

    any tips or recommendations on taking better pix? (so I don't have to GTFO)

    Leave it on full auto and totally rock that investment. Or PM Derka. Or be more specific. I dunno, usually P/ProgramAE lets you make tweaks without worry of losing the whole shot. Use Kodak film. Use fill flash frequently outdoors. Pro tip: don't take the stickers off, it helps the photo performance

    It comes with a 10mm prime and a 10-30 zoom? What a weird combination. I guess it has a 2.8x crop factor, so it's somewhat less weird. I'd think the main issue with that camera is going to be finding sufficiently wide lenses if you want to take wide angle shots since the crop factor turned a 10 into a 28mm (compared to a full-frame camera). It's already difficult to find good wide lenses for Micro 4/3 which is only 2x crop factor. The upside is that it makes it easier to find longer lenses, which most people probably prefer anyway.

    let me clarify, I posted poorly.

    it has the following lens. 10 mm f/2.8 CX-format single focal length wide angle lens (27mm 35 mm equivalent), the most compact of the 1 NIKKOR series, is great for shallow depth of field looks and for capturing lots of detail even in low light. And a 10-30mm VR Zoom Lens.

    What I'm looking for is a few tips on Camera talk means in real English to a neophyte. like...explain ISO and White Balance and how and when to make adjustments. $#@!..point me to a good sight that explains the nuances and I will read up. I don't want to simply search and hope I'm reading quality content. I'm hoping for photo hounds can point me in the right direction. thx

    thats the meat.
    the rest of the stuff is just decorations.
    i found after years of doing landscape and 'travel' photography the pictures are boring. now i try to capture photos with people in there.. anticipate and capture emotions and reactions is much more fun
