We decided against it as we felt it took too much time away from the makeup chair for our many exhausting LHN demands?

We're family. We need to be focused on developing table manners, etiquette, a sense of courtesy and proper grooming techniques.

Chuckle if you want. It's not that far off.

They don't hit in practice during the spring, the summer, or the fall. They follow the lead of their head coach, as every program does, and they feel entitled to wins and acclaim for simply showing up. They are soft, entitled, bullies and they have no idea how to handle adversity when they get punched in the mouth by life, a law student on the pick-up basketball court, a drunk guy at the pizza parlor, or by a meanie fan who thinks they shat themselves against OU. "Hard work" means showing up to practices and shouting a lot and echoing what the HC says to other players. There is no such thing as smart work. Assistant coaches wind up dealing with the same problems. They are all insulated in a bubble that reinforces itself constantly with self-congratulatory backslaps, misleading stats, and the latest revenue numbers that drive the program.

Change happens through adversity. Whenever Mack Brown is comfortable, his whole program will behave the same. They are the epitome of everything we should aspire not to be in life. Talent is not going to be transformed into better people with better skill sets coming out the other side when no work is required to feel rewarded in between the entrance and the exit.

I don't think we do a good job of instilling and or nurturing the killer instinct.

Notre Dames defensemen patrolled the field looking for Okies to decapitate on every play. We never do that.

Interesting discussion on First Take about how much a team is influenced by it's head coach. Examples: Jason Garrett and Cowboys who lose games because of undisciplined play. NO Saints losing with the same talent because Sean Payton is suspended. It all starts at the top, even player development.

I remember reading a quote from Mack in ... oh ... 2009 or so. It went something like this: "People come in here and are a little surprised when they see our guys. They say, 'I thought they would look better.' And I say, 'Well, they will play harder for you on Saturdays.'"

I felt like that was a little peek behind the curtain. It was post 2000-2004 spankings from OU when Mack was mad that people would quit, and it seemed to me to hint at the fact that he is recruiting for gritty grit heart gritness now instead of raw talent. The whole 'character' thing.

I think we are paying the piper now for that. Every now and again it doesn't matter how much heart you have, when a frothing-at-the-mouth linebacker is coming at you, you are going to 'grit' yourself into a 4 yard loss.

In short, I think our guys just aren't as good as they used to be. It's a failed recruiting strategy. I don't care what the recruiting rankings say. I don't see Casey Hampton wandering the sidelines. I don't see Nathan Vasher out there. I don't see Leonard Davis.

I think our glee instructor is mailing it in. But our dance instructor really has the team choreographed well for Jump Around, so we might get some "Dancing with the Stars" candidates, provided they actually become stars.

In addition to development, our parochial recruiting is a problem. Doesn't matter if we get the best LB in Texas if Texas has a $#@!ty LB class. I think the LHN feeds the entitlement mentality as well. It may not be a big distraction in and of itself but it is just more undeserved adulation.

I couldn't disagree more. Talent is not a problem. The 2006-2009 classes sucked ass, but the last 3 have not. This team has no heart. They play like a bunch of entitled clowns. Another head coach could and maybe will come into this program ahead of next year and field an entirely different team than what Brown is putting out there.

Funny, we sent the entire defense from 2009 to the NFL.

Go to Moncrief. Look for the smiling picture of Mack Brown prominently hanging which bears the following caption: "Players Are a Reflection of Their Coach".

Totally agree here. I don't see players who can't run or jump. I see players who are running and jumping in the wrong direction.

A little unfair. There hasn't been anyone like Casey in all of college football the past 10 years. Dude lead the team in tackles one year. Suh was the closest and he wrecked shop a little differently.

Since Vasher, we've had guys like Huff, Aaron Ross, Earl Thomas and Kenny Vaccaro. Vaccaro is a dominant player who is underrated because of the trash around him and self-inflicted wounds from our current DC. Vasher was indeed salty and smooth, but also downed a ball inside the 5 in the 2001 OU game that set up with Roy Williams SI play.

Leonard Davis. Moore is pretty close, but 6'6 350lbs dudes don't grow on trees. He also struggled early in his career finding a position.

Recruiting is not a problem. Player development and the environment is THE issue. Muschamp, Stoops, Miles or Saban offered about 90% of our players. It's whats happening when they get here, since 2004-2005.

You'd have a good point if it were true.

If we were "passing" on stacks of the highest-rated HS kids because of character its sure never showed up in the recruiting rankings.

A number of players tweeted upon arrival in Lawrence about how "boring" Lawrence is, and how bad the stadium is, etc etc.

It was right then that I knew there was no hope of covering -21. I mean with our $#@!ty defense -21 was a reach to begin with, but when you pile a lazy arrogant attitude on top of it, it's a recipe for disaster.

WVU players talked the same mess upon arrival in Lubbock. And they got their doors blown off. You're there to play a football game, leave all that "boring town" $#@! for the fans and alums to talk about. You're not there to have fun no matter what that idiot Bill Little tries to tell you.

I see a decline in talent at the end of their time at UT. I don't think it is entirely attributable to failure to coach them up while they were here. I think it is the selection process as well.

On the other hand, Snyder's all about family in his program. Hell, the stadium's name includes it.

But that doesn't prevent his team from being coached up, disciplined and pretty nasty on game day.

That is because it is just an outside facade, it isn't what the coaches are pushing 24/7.

I just want a football team that has fight, knows the fundamentals, and is as fired up as the opposing team about the game. I'm tired of us prancing into the cotton bowl with little interest while the OU players are going bat $#@! crazy like they just escaped from prison. There is so much wrong with this program internally and I'm not sure mack knows how to correct it.

Yep. Give these same players to Bill Snyder and see what kind of results you get.

I don't see how anyone can say our issues are anything but coaching related at this point. And it starts from the top.

With the caveat that we have about half the seniors starting that a team should have and twice as many sophomore starters. Next year we should be a lot closer to a healthy balance.

Look at the offer lists of our recruits. Saban, Miles or Stoops are all over our recruits. In 2006-10, we made some reaches (Taylor Doyle, Brock Fitzhenry), but in aggregate Mack has maintained his Mr. February label every year.

Exactly, I don't know why this is so lost on people. We may have players who are athletic or physically gifted but they are utterly devoid of football aptitute. Kansas State and OU have far more real football players than we do.

How many wide receivers in the NFL have been bigger and faster and stronger than Jerry Rice? And how do they compare? Having awareness about what's going on around you, being able to make clutch plays, being able to get open and run good routes, and all these other things matter a hell of a lot more than being fast or big. Roy Williams on paper was far more talented and physically freakish than Rice and so $#@!ing what? He could be coached by the same coaches Rice had and he'd still never be remotely as good. Some people have it and some don't regardless of their measurables. Just like Quan Cosby had everything that Mike Davis doesn't regardless of physical ability when it came to actually playing football.

Practices are a bunch of mindless drills, then, unless they've changed something since I saw them last, a toothless team period against scout teamers holding bags.

In order to be good you have to practice skills in some meaningful environment, and Texas doesn't do it at all. At most places, you act like this and you're lucky to win 3 games, but because Mack recruits so well he can pull out 9-10 win seasons and fool himself into thinking he's done a good job.

This. We need to preach toughness. That Scipio piece after the OU game mentioned how each time down the tunnel in Dallas, the players should know good and well that they are about to enter a fistfight. That $#@! goes for every game, not just the OU game.

A lot of our players look like they're just happy with the social perks of being a football player here.

I'm not sure there is much facade with Snyder anymore.

He asked that the stadium be named after his family "If you are going to do it, name it after the people that I care about the most." He knows he screwed up his first marriage and with his kids (so sayeth this article. I think Snyder is just a good competent coach who is really coaching up the lower ranked players Kansas State gets. They are overachieving based on the players rankings, his wins are coaching and fundamentals. Remember the dude retired before because of a couple of down years in the program and came back when it was worse after him.

tl;dr: I think what you is is what you get with Snyder, no facade.

How many more $#@!ing players are going to come out and say they had better coaching in high school before they take action?

After Kenny said that $#@! after the game... how many players is that now? 6 or 7 that have basically come out and said they had better/comparable coaching in HS?

This is a problem with kids in this state and what Butch Davis was talking about. Kenny didn't get better coaching in high school, and if he said that, he's just continuing to be the most annoying player in UT history.
