    Best red wine under $100/bottle?

Need to get a regular red wine drinker a bottle as a thank you gift. Suggestions?

    Two buck chuck.

Seriously, though, don't buy based on price. Most people who drink a lot of reds have pretty specific tastes and if you don't know preferences I'd stay away from anything pricey. That said, you should be able to get a really nice claret/Bourdeaux, but not first growth, if that's his thing.

That bottle of... delicious... wine. Reddest of the red wines... so tempting.

I have loved the Russian River Valley pinots I've had in the $50-$60 range. I've also heard The Dead Arm is pretty bad ass. Or pick up a Bordeaux from 2005, which I think was another of those "best of the century" vintages.

This is one of my favorites and it is under $30.

Also, Silver Oak makes some great wines under the price you mentioned. I think it is usually around $80.

I'll second the Silver Oak suggestion. If I recall correctly, the 2005 can be found at Total Wine for just under $100.

Edit: looks like it's under $75.

$100 is a really high price point.

8 of WineSpectator's top 10 wines of 2012 are at or below $100. Many in the $40-$50 range.

Cakebread Chard is amazing. Silver Oak cab blows Cakebread cab out of the water.

I love all different kinds of wine and Silveroak is a wheelhouse, can't miss cab.

Get your hands on anything they make. Their Merlot drinks like a big Cabernet. My favorite wine ever and usually I prefer Zins if that tells you how good this Merlot is.

can't verify 1. also, wine is to taste, so what someone says is terrible, you may love. what you hate, others may adore. learn what you like and how to describe it.

2 - yes. which makes this thread damn near impossible.

3 - whatever it is that you get, get two (if not more). take time to develop your taste. when you do find a wine and have tried it a couple times, read what others have to say. then, try a new wine. repeat process. gradually you'll begin to know what you like/want and find that go-to bottle that you can rely on, or when at a restaurant tell the sommelier what you're looking for and order like a boss instead of like some guys - looking like chumps.

Cakebread Cab is easily the single most over rated wine out there. It's fine.....@ $30. At current prices, it borders on Road Warrior levels of theft.

It basically shows you like to spend money. Just buy a bottle of Clos Du Val for $30 and pocket the extra $70.

Silver Oak is fine, if too pricey, if you like huge fruit/oak bombs.

I love Heitz Cellars. Their wine is so tasty.

Unfortunately, I don't drink nearly as much wine as I used to (beer instead), but I second the notion of looking for 2005, 2009, 2010 Bordeaux. 2006 and 2007 from Piedmont (Barolo, Barbaresco) or Tuscany (Brunello, Chianti). The 2010 and 2005 Chataneuf's were quite lovely.

It's not too hard to find, try a Pio Cesare Barolo from 2007. I saw one at Costco recently for $55.

If I could take any wine, I'd probably go with the Carlisle Montafi Zin, but you ain't gonna find that in a store.

Wine douches in the US are probably the single reason that more people aren't into wine. Who wants to constantly be told that the wine they like sucks and they are too stupid to know what they should like? I wish that every one of them would suffer the fate of this woman:

I'd find out what he or she prefers, region/country and varietal, etc., then go to a solid wine retailer explain your situation and buy that way. Austin Wine Merchant, Central Market, Twin Liquors (varies, we like the one near us) or other places like that where the people are knowledgeable.

I'm not a regular $50 bottle of wine drinker, but I don't like Napa/Sonoma wines much at all. I love Central Coast Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Spanish Tempranillo, and many French or Italian wines. I'm not big on Aussie wines and very selective on S. American wines. If I received a wine gift and it was from the wrong region or a varietal that I don't typically like, I wouldn't care how great it was. If I received a $20 bottle instead of a $50 bottle and it was known as a fantastic wine from a region and a varietal I love, I'd be thrilled.

if you are daring, you can add vintage to the list of qualifications too (as noted above it's the most important issue after region/varietal). Usually though, a knowledgeable wine steward will be able to assist in that area as well.

anyway, that's my two cents on how to buy wine as a gift...

You could just buy a nice bottle of Champagne, like Laurent Pierre. Errbody likes champagne.

If you really want to impress someone who knows wine, then buy them something that costs a lot less than it should. Like a $25 bottle that should cost $50. Don't worry about the price - find something good that fits their tastes and they will like it.

Just to add to that - here's a list of wines under $20 that are rated 90 points or more by various professionals.

Seconded. Finest bottle of wine I've had for under $100.00

It's becoming popular so look for the price to go up.

Lots of Malbecs. If you like them, they are usually reasonably priced for what you get.

totally agree. it's like discovering a new band before anyone else, or seeing that VY in high school is going to lead his college team to the MNC. shows some real thought, and expertise. When we discover a $10 bottle that should be $25 we freak out, by a case and go nuts. It's a great feeling (until the next morning).

Wife and I order Napa cabs. Love them. Currently working through a case of Hope and Grace.

Best advice on here is to just start drinking wines. Everyone has a different preference. Some like more bite, while others like none. Good luck.

I think $80 has a really wide range of fine reds (many on here). Unfortunately you have to go up to about $400 to get into the rarified air of a really great wine. I've had two bottles of wine in my life that made me appreciate why some people are obsessed with it. One was a Mersault-Charmes (can't for the life of me remember who made it or the year). I had it in Vegas with my wife, still remember it very clearly. The other was a first growth bordeaux (one of the big 3, again can't remember). I think it was an early 80s vintage, one of the best years according to the magazines. It was unbelievable, and it just kept getting better.
