Thread: So... when is rock coming back?

  1. #1

So... when is rock coming back?

I'll admit, I'm not a musicophile. You couldn't pay me enough to go deal with crowds at SXSW or ACL. But I listen to just about everything from the 60s through today.

So maybe I am looking in the wrong spots, but it seems that rock is currently in a trough. Most new stuff sounds very "folksy." In fact, I'm listening to some SRV right now to get my fix of songs with guitars, drums, and no synthesizers or wimpy voices.

So when is rock coming back? Is there something I'm missing that I can listen to some rock in the mainstream (101X has turned into the Mumford and Sons hour)?

If I listen to the local rock station it is all "classic rock." Maybe it will never come back.

The electric guitar has almost disappeared from new music. It's very depressing. I'm not sure it will come back either.

The OP is spot on with the "folksy" and "wimpy" remarks, but I guess that's just what the kids want these days...and it pretty much fits them so.

As for the "local rock" station(KLBJ), they for the most part refused to play REAL rock for several years. The definitely didn't play 90% of what they're playing today. ACDC, Judas Priest, Scorpions were all ABSOLUTE no nos. They instead focused on what they called "progressive rock" which consisted of artist like Charlie Daniels, Commander Cody, Delbert McClinton. The occasional playing of ZZ Top's Lagrange was pretty much the only rock ever played.

In what universe could Charlie Daniels be considered progressive rock ? or Delbert McClinton for that matter.

MTV killed rock and roll. I saw it happen before my very eyes. And once hip hop [spit !] made it's way to the MTV airwaves, nails were be driven into the coffin. It'll come back, music like everything else is cyclical.

You got me. To be honest, after all these years I still don't even know what they meant by "progressive rock" back then. The only thing I was sure of is that the stuff they were playing was never ever considered R&R by any of my friends. Austin radio was pretty much totally anti rock back then. The only radio rock heard in Austin was on the occasional day when you got lucky and picked up KISS and Joe Anthony on AM.

Oh, and I totally agree with your hip-hop/MTV assertion.

Foo Fighters are about it from what I can tell. Also, I've never been a huge fan of Chris Cornell sounding vocals but the 'new' Winery Dogs has some solid guitar work in it. And I love the chorus in this one.

Blackberry Smoke if you like the southern rock style.

From the mid 90s until about 2008 or so there was a strong subculture bases around a genre called "stoner rock." It has mostly fallen by the wayside and at its peak barely found the mainstream. That is where bands like QOTSA and the Black Keys first found success, with that crowd.

But if you want to turn on the radio and hear new "rock," good luck with that. But if you want to do some work, I will suggest the following.

    Amplified Heat (Austin band)
    Mammoth Volume (now defunct)
    Fu Manchu
Che (one album called Sounds of Liberation)
    RPG (Virginia)
    The Brought Low (Brooklyn)

I like how you ask when rock is coming back, then throw in some SRV.

With the exception of the contrived folksy bull$#@!, I enjoy most of today's music. That being said, I miss the days when a band's lead singer actually sounded like a man and not some pre-pubescent boy or wispy girl.

Also, I miss good old fashioned teenage angst and $#@! authority music. I'm sure it's out there but it's not as popular as it was in previous decades. I guess Millennials are too contempt and happy with their Iphones and Facebook to give a $#@!.

I hate hearing that rock is dead. The truth is radio just sucks balls, and most are too lazy to sift threw all the $#@! to find a decent band in the days of internet radio.

I went out of my way to not say rock is dead. I honestly think things like this are cyclical. Are we setting up for another era of moving from 80s hair bands to Nirvana?

I was hoping for this in the mid-2000s. Don't see it happening any time soon. Just enjoy that we were there to enjoy that explosion of great rock when it happened.

As far as Top 40 radio goes there is a better chance of John Goodman swimming the English Channel than there is of there ever being another non-sappy ballad rock song hitting #1 on the charts. If Money for Nothing or Another Brick in the Wall Part 2 were released today neither one would hit the Top 40 on the pop charts without T.I., Lil Wayne, or Chris Brown laying some lame rap over part of it.

I rarely listen to the radio either, I'm on Spotify all the time, but I've heard that damn Hey-Ho song 5000 times simply by being alive on this earth. There is no escaping top 40 music, which is why I miss the days when it used to be filled with legit rock bands.

As long as The Hold Steady is still making music, there will be kick ass American rock and/or roll being made.

I've been saying forever we need less bands that want to sound like the $#@!ing cure and the smiths and all those fruits, and more bands that want to sound like Molly Hatchet.

    oh, and this too:

This kinda rocks. Alter Bridge has been putting out some decent stuff, albeit to minimal fan fare in the states.

They first started saying that rock was dead in the '90s. It's still not.

Happy twee folk is all the rage now. Polyphonic Spree, Godfather to all this bull$#@!, has even come back from the dead. But rock goes on.

It's getting more like jazz, though (which rock knocked off the mountaintop). Jazz still exists... its fans just have to work a little harder to hear it, go see it.

Here is this year's Record Store Day single-- the ending guitar solo will kick your ass up into your chest cavity:

Came here to post this. I dig. Tremonti is elite, and Myles is a throwback to when male singers sang.

There's a disnction that I'm wondering if people are making here. There's rock and there's rock and roll. Both are part of the same family but one is a different cousin. Rock is Zepplin, Hendrix, Def Leopard (spit). Rock and roll is the stones, Beatles, CCR, Bodeans, smithereens, ZZ Top, Clapton (depending on the era) etc. Certainly cross over between the two, but rock and roll is the original rebellion music. I'm betting it's the rock and roll that comes back first. Nostalgia always makes things return. Just my $.02

I always felt bad for him when he was in Creed, as it was obvious that he had a much heavier style that he rarely got to showcase. Elite is a strong word, but he's good. Alterbridge as a whole, well, at least they're trying.

Not guitar driven rock, but I really had my hopes up for The Constellations.

Again, not really guitar rock, but it had some punch to it.

of course, there's always these guys:

And this video reminds me of a story. /csb alert - Back in the day, prob mid nineties or so, I'm at the Clubhouse in Dallas with a big group of people, including Darrell. I hadn't seen him in a while and I think it was fairly close to the time they opened the joint. Anyway, I asked him how they decided to open the club. He said "Well man, tbone, we started makin all this money and knew we needed to invest in something. But we didn't know $#@! about stocks and bonds and all that. So we decided to invest in what we knew: PUSSY". Then we drank a bunch of Crown and I think I woke up about 3 days later. Moral of the story: It's one thing to partly like a rock star, its another thing to party with a rockstar. At the strip club. That he owns. Just sayin. /csb over

28 posts to get to this...I am disappoint.

There's some really good heavy stuff out right now IMHO. 5FDP, All That Remains, In This Moment, Stone Sour.

I feel like the heavier stuff is making a bit of a resurgence.

It doesn't help that the best rock band around doesn't sing in English.
