My power rack/cage was just taking up too much space in the house, plus I'm working out mostly at the gym so I decided to sell it. The cage, the plates and the bar were just freaking space eating monsters.
Still, I loved being able to just bang out some quick chinups whenever I felt like it, so I wanted to replace the cage with a chin dip station. However, most chin/dips have weird configurations and are way too clunky, like this:
Seriously, what the fuck is this? Can I get any grip variation at all? I kept looking for a simple chin up bar with dip handles with no luck. They all have stupid doodads like handles for pushups at the bottom and what not.
Then I remembered the Soloflex. It's really a genius design in simplicity, so I bought one used for super cheap ($150).
(btw - dont' ask if that's a dude or a chick in the picture. I have no freakin idea. I just snagged it off some website)
When I put the bar in the top position, it's plenty tall enough for chins. The dip bar works great and it ended up being way cheaper than any chin/dip station I could buy.
The only problem is I may never use the rubber band stuff, or who knows, I might. But the dumbass leg extension thing (don't ever do leg extensions - terrible for knees) and the butterfly attachment will be collecting dust. If I can't find a way to give them away, I'm going to take them to the dump.
One word of warning - don't attempt those Crossfit style kipping pullups on the Soloflex. The way it's balanced, it'll tip backward. I found out the hard way. Luckily I didn't crash and burn. Just go slow and controlled.
But if you're in the market for a good body weight workout machine, I would suggest looking at Craigslist for a Soloflex. Folks are basically giving them away.
