advice for craps first-timer?

That statement is absolutely true thus the reason it is gambling. However, if you minimize your risk and maximize when the luck is on your temporary side you can run up your profits quickly and have a good time. In the long run, you will lose, but short term success is possible.

Your point is true, but my point was made with regard to the folks positioning these systems as almost foolproof. Nothing could be further from the truth when the math is applied.

If you ever see me at the craps table, you can be assured I'll have my Pass or don't pass minimum bet out there and I'll be working my odds bet( that's where I get my variance in the game.)

Dropped in to L'AubergeDuLac this morning.

Played the don'ts at $15 table. Caught a streak and cashed out with a $1100 after buying in with $100. I was actually up $1800 but was betting between $300 and $400 on my odds bets. Lost 2 in a row and cashed out.

Was talking to a dealer who remembered me from when I was a regular and he said they got rid of the god-forsaken crapless craps table and took their available odds back up to 20X from 5X, which is two very good moves, IMO.

I think LDL got caught up in how much nicer a place they have and took their customers hostage. Evidently a bunch of them like myself told them to go get f'ed. Glad to see LDL responded in a positive fashion. They had changed the layout of the casino a bit and replaced the carpet. It appeared they had addressed some of the rough edges that were starting to come out.

For the way I play, I still like 100X odds at Shreveport better, but I will stop in LDL again if I am in the Lake Chuck area.

If I'm up, I'm betting it. I won several bets before I got into the $300-$400 range. For me, the table minimum isn't that big of a deal when we're talking $5-$10-$15. The odds-bets are what i change according to how the game is flowing. If it had been a $5 table, I would have increased my don't pass to $15 so I could get the amount of odds out there that i wanted( remember it was 20X.) If they had 100X odds, I would have never had to increase my initial bet until my pay off for my odds bet was greater than $500. I was not quite there today, but it was fun and profitable...

Those max odds are hard to get to, but DAMN it's fun when you do!

If 8 is the point. put your $16 down( at a $5 table) and say, " Inside, please." This tells the dealer you do not want the "outside numbers" 4 and 10. If the point is 4 or 10, you would say, "Place the inside, no 8."

Don't throw the money into the layout, but place it in front of you in the open area, OR place it in the "come" box and make sure the dealer knows you wish to place that money, rather than make a Come bet.

Put it down in one stack, and that will help the dealer.

If they're being $#@!s, separate stacks may be warranted...LOL.

yes, and assuming your bets are pretty consistent, after a while you can just lay the money down and a smart dealer will figure it out. you can say "inside" or you can say "5, 6, 9" but you never need to separate them.

i always stack my chips with the whole stack except the bottom chip together (bottom chip slid a quarter inch back), just like the dealers pay out.

and please, for the love of god, have a pair of testicles. Put your money down on the table, announce your bet (that doesn't mean shout, but say it out loud dammit) and you're good. Any halfway decent dealer will hear you and place accordingly, even if they aren't looking directly at you. If they don't, they'll ask, and you can say it again. Really, the only time you SHOULDN'T try and make a bet is if they're in the middle of a round of payouts - let them finish dropping chips to folks, and you can then go ahead. IN very short order, as Slorch and HG say, they'll get used to your pattern and you'll be on your way.

When a shooter hits their point, understand that the dealer's first obligation is to pick up losing bets, pay winning bets on the pass line, and then pay any prop bets that were booked by the stickman in the middle. AT THAT POINT, he will then start to his left and go to each player for any new bets. If you are on the dealer's far right and he is booking someone else's "52 across, no...let me buy the 10 while I'm at it" and you're trying to book your $12 place bet on the 8; it's going to frustrate a lot of people.

A good dealer will make every effort to book your bet and if time/ game flow permits, coach you on the proper amounts. be patient and wait your turn.

As cap'n said, speak firmly and clearly. help the dealer out and he will learn your tendencies. He might even remind you to get that odds bet in before the shooter makes his 4...

It'll be obvious when a dealer is ready to take your money. If you're the last person next to the stickman, it might take said dealer a few seconds to get around to you, but you'll see that he's taking new bets (this is assuming you aren't fresh off the boat to the craps table, and understand the basic mechanics as Slorch said).

The easy way to do things is to always play on one end of the table :). Then you get to go first.

jesus you guys are so right. as much as a new guy trying to learn can be annoying (although i always try to teach the game if i can), there's nothing more annoying than, "i'm not sure he heard my bet" guy. he won't put his chips down, and he'll say it a few times until the dealer places the chips.

when i get into a really good rhythm with a dealer, it is magical. i'll put money down, he'll anticipate my presses, and i get to shout cool $#@! like, "make it look like one-fifty." the really good dealers have it all in their head anyway, so putting the chips in the right slot is just details.

when hankkingsley and i were in vegas a bunch back in the day, we had a specific dealer at bally's that was fantastic. he knew the system, knew our drinks, knew what we wanted to talk about (college football betting mostly). and if we pressed something, he knew it, even if he hadn't put the chips out there yet. and if it came right back and hit again, he would pay the new number without thinking twice about it.

dealers who respect the speed and flow of the game make all the difference.

If you are a beginner with the HG system and unsure about the inside numbers betting I would also add that a good spot at the table is in the corner right next to the dealer. They will help you out and you are right next to them for speaking purposes.

Yeah, alternated. Separate sessions, actually. Rode one buy-in to zero one way, and repeated the feat with the other a bit later. Not a strong night :).

I got more respect for the game then most of the people here having played and dealt it for 10+ years. I would never yell 7 thats just rude. However, if the table has gone full circle and no one is hitting points or rolling numbers I'm not going to sit there and just keep dumping money. If its cold, its cold and I might as well make some money on the darkside while I wait for things to turn around.

it's hard to explain if you're not experienced with the system, but i'll try.

there are basically two tracks of betting. the 6/8 and the 5/9. in a perfect world, they're all hitting a bunch, but in reality, certain ones will hit again and again, and others won't. for example, if everything is hitting equally, you press your 5 up to $35, then if it hits, you collect all, then the hit after that, you press up to $85. and you do the same with the 9. (in other words, at that level - the $35 5/9, and the $30 6/8, you take a full collect on each of them). but the way it would likely go in real life, is that you hit the $35 5 or 9 twice before its counterpart even gets pressed that high. so what i was saying, is that you may want to collect the $35 twice on the first one that hits, then if/when the other gets there, just skip straight to the $85 press.

total is the same amount of collects, but sometimes it's nice (and more conservative for the newer or tighter players) to snag two collects early.

The points you can be are 4 5 6 8 9 10. If 4 is the point, you start on 5 6 8, then get on 9 10 after full collect. The other number is the point. You don't bet on the point number.

I always bet the point if its one of the inside numbers. If you want to bet the point you can put it on the line between the pass line and where odds would go and it represents place betting the point without making it look messy up top. I start with the 4 inside numbers every time as it represents 50% of all the combinations of the dice so each roll is a coin flip to hit. If the point hits, I just factor that in once the new point is established and continue my usual pressing.

That guy was awesome. It also helped that he liked the aggressiveness of the system we used. He really wanted us to win.

I had a good run in Lake Charles about 10 years ago, and the floor manager had to take over because the dealer couldn't do the math. Also it was a $1000 max bet table, which I was a couple of rolls away from having on 2 numbers before the shooter crapped out. It would have sucked to be capped at that amount.
