Going out to visit fam in July. Any good recs?
Wait for Texasdago to chime in. He's a regular visitor to that land.
Palm Springs proper is a pretty big gay hangout. If you want to avoid that scene stick to Palm Desert.
i was only there for like 4 days, but i loved it. the bougainvillea everywhere is gorgeous. i was there in april and it was almost 100 every day, but SO freakin comfortable. not sure how july will be.
as for the gays, i was there over some big gay weekend festival thing. if you are from austin, it shouldn't bother you too much. we did have a pretty funny encounter in our group though. in a search for illicit substances, one of our crew had his package grabbed and he lost his mind. not so much on the gay guy, but we didn't hear the end of it that night, nor did he for the rest of the trip. we found it hilarious.
If you are a drinker & a golfer then you'll have a great time. I was severely disappointed in the restaurants.
Been in July a couple of times - the heat isn't too bad as long as your hotel has a pool. Must-dos...
Joshua Tree National Park - Start in the morning. About 45 minutes away and all kinds of amazing hikes, from one mile to several. Some stunning scenery.
Palm Canyons - Just south of town. Pretty stunning to see all these palms in the middle of the desert.
Take the tram up Mt. San Jacinto - Nice way to get a break from the heat plus the tram ride is very cool.
If you want to spend the $, stay at the Orbit In - http://www.orbitin.com/. My wife and I like the Desert Star Hotel - http://www.desertstarhotel.com/stay/ (We like bungalow 5 - stayed there 3 times)
Not a golfer (that 1 good shot to 100 bad kills me) but a drinker.
My aunt and uncle live in Palm Desert (house with a pool) so I will be staying with them. I wanted to get some perspective as the places they hang out, needless to say, I am usually the youngest person there by 20 to 30 years :D See if there was a place anyone had been that was just awesome and worth trying out.
Went to Palm Canyons a couple of years ago. I thought that was cool. :D
2 1/2 year bump.
I'm going out there in March. Anyone have anything to add? Restaurants, bars and just in general- things to do (besides playing golf). Thanks in advance.
I was there in July of this past year and Arnold Palmers was great. Stayed at the JW Marriot and played golf at Silver Rock CC. Silver Rock was by far the most difficult and nicest course I ever played.
the towns all flow into one another. My folks have a place in La Quinta, I get out there a couple times a year. Great Hiking, try Ladder Canyon. rent a bad ass car and drive out to the Salton Sea or go up the tram to San jacento Mountain and the park up there.
as far as food goes.... http://www.cuistotrestaurant.com/
thank me later.
In-and-Out Burger
Carl's Junior
you're welcome
Thanks for the suggestions. I'm heading out there tomorrow morning for the weekend.
Try this place

And get the pork chop. Ate here twice on my last trip to the desert.
oh...Keely's for breakfast. it's a kick ass little diner type join in the heart of town
yup, that's the place, it's good eating
Clint eastwood has a restaurant in la quinta called hogs breath
Just for future reference for anyone else searching this thread for recs:
- Bill's Pizza (pretty good with lots of different options for food and it was crowded)
- Kings Highway at Ace Hotel (decent food but it was empty and the service is awful)
- El Jefe at Saguaro (the fish tacos were pretty good and it's a lively bar scene at night)
