the 100 best comedies of the 80's

what is it about the 1980's? maybe it was just when i grew up, but there are just so many great, classic comedies through the decade. this is my own list, in chronological order. and it was $#@!ing hard to get this list down to 100 (i even cheated a little by grouping sequels in with the originals). and i left out movies like goonies, back to the future, stand by me, working girl, heathers, lucas, that are great, but might not technically be comedies.

i can only imagine no other decade has this type of list:

    blues brothers
    caddyshack
    airplane
    seems like old times
    midnight madness
    stripes
history of the world part I
the cannonball run 1 and 2

    splash
    bachelor party
    johnny dangerously
    the flamingo kid
    the breakfast club
    clue
    weird science
    pee wee's big adventure
    better off dead
    fletch and fletch lives
    spies like us
    real genius
    teen wolf
    brewster's millions
    the sure thing
    fandango
    volunteers
    ferris bueller's day off
    crocodile dundee
    three amigos
    the money pit
    the golden child
    ruthless people
    back to school
    jumpin jack flash
down and out in beverly hills
    about last night
    one crazy summer
    gung ho
    wildcats
    running scared
    the princess bride
    spaceballs
    raising arizona
    good morning vietnam
    planes, trains and automobiles
    the witches of eastwick
    roxanne
    innerspace
    dragnet
    adventures in babysitting
    throw momma from the train
    broadcast news
    stakeout
    the secret of my success
    blind date

Random, but I have a soft spot for The Best of Times. Although I don't know which of those you'd remove to include it.

Wait, yes I do. Ghostbusters 2.

I $#@!ing loved THE BEST OF TIMES, also another Robin Williams movie that probably wouldn't make most lists, THE SURVIVORS.

I gotta add the Whopee Boys to that list as well, Michael O'Keefe and Paul Rodriguez. The turkey and banana scene kills me everytime.

Comedy does not age well and alot of those are not comedies. I'd say only Spinal Tap, Ferris Bueller, Bull Durham, Midnight Run,Raising Arizona and Ghostbusters would hold up today. Tootsie and 48 Hours are good movies but not funny. The rest are elevated by nostalgia, most of them are weak or severely deficient

    borderline retarded statement.

i take that back. there is nothing borderline about it.

"How do you feel about Cleveland?" might be the funniest line of any 80s movie. I'm laughing right now just thinking about it.

Tootsie is funny as $#@!. Hoffman, Bill Murray, Charles Durning, Dabney Coleman, Commandant Lassard, $#@! even Sydney Pollack, are all hilarious.

seriously, you might need to sit a couple plays out and slowly back away from this thread.

first off, tootsie is in my top 5 comedies of all time, and is #2 on the afi list. as for your cute list of 6 movies that hold up, give me a $#@!ing break. i actually made this list after watching the sure thing last night, for about the 60th time. you obviously haven't seen movies like broadcast news, a fish called wanda, real genius, when harry met sally, princess bride, splash, you know what, i made my list. sad that you can't enjoy vacation anymore. may god have mercy on your soul.

Tootsie is a great movie, but no one would laugh at it today. And I've seen every one of the movies you listed. Stripes has a funny first half but can you honestly tell me you don't turn it off once they get to Italy? Also any list with Steve Guttenberg in it is pretty much invalidated.

Try to watch some of the comedies from the 50's it would be alot like someone watching Weird Science today.

I looked for Moscow on the Hudson and didn't see. Take out Jumping Jack Flash if it isn't there.
one of the last 5 or so i took out. i started with 150+.
Speaking of Guttenberg, Three Men and a Baby needs a mention.
another one i took out to get down to 100. again, these are my favorite 100. and it was hard to do it. i don't imagine 90's or 00's would be as difficult.
Tootsie is a great movie, but no one would laugh at it today. And I've seen every one of the movies you listed. Stripes has a funny first half but can you honestly tell me you don't turn it off once they get to Italy? Also any list with Steve Guttenberg in it is pretty much invalidated.

i laughed at tootsie, and so did the 21 year old sitting next to me less than a month ago. i watch it all the time. yeah, of course they're dated, they're made 20 years ago. i didn't say these are the 100 best of all time, just the 100 best of the 80's, and that the decade kicks ass with its comedies. and i enjoyed weird science again very recently.

basically you're saying if you made this list, there would be 10 movies on it.

not to nitpick, because I think this is a great thread, but...

you left out Back to The Future because it isn't a comedy, but included diner and say anything? I think i'd call back to the future more of a comedy than either of those coming of age flicks. not even sure I'd call Fast Times a comedy, as while it is certainly funny, I think it does about the best of any movie of capturing a true teenage experience at that time.

3 movies on your list I hate: clue, jumpin jack flash and dragnet

Re: the 100 best comedies of the 80's

That's a damn big list. If I took your list and widdled it down to 20, I would include:

    airplane
    european vacation
    sixteen candles
    police academy
    top secret
    clue
    pee wee's big adventure
    fletch
    spies like us
    ferris bueller's day off
    back to school
    one crazy summer
    spaceballs
    planes, trains and automobiles
    dragnet
    adventures in babysitting
    can't buy me love
    naked gun
    biloxi blues
    license to drive

Some Like It Hot is still one of the funniest damned movies I've ever seen, and it was made in 1959.

i can only imagine no other decade has this type of list:

    airplane
    arthur
    fast times at ridgemont high*
    a christmas story
    this is spinal tap*
    sixteen candles*
    weird science
    pee wee's big adventure
    the sure thing
    ferris bueller's day off
    three amigos
down and out in beverly hills
    about last night
    the princess bride*
    raising arizona*
    planes, trains and automobiles
    adventures in babysitting
    a fish called wanda*
    midnight run
    dirty rotten scoundrels
    when harry met sally
    uncle buck
A lot of suck in your list other than these.

Diner* and Risky Business don't really belong. But both were terrific.

    * = terrific

Scorsese's After Hours and King of Comedy don't belong either, but if you are mentioning something like Risky Business, you need to throw in those.

Why not? Why do we need any list that includes crocodile dundee?

You obviously watch a lot of movies. Why don't you, for the purposes of this board, point out the movies and talk about the movies that are really great and have staying power?

people...i knew there were a ton of great 80's comedies. i went through year by year on imdb (total votes by year) and i started listing the ones i liked, many of which i've watched recently. there were about 155 on my list. and anything from 1980-1983 probably didn't even get a fair shake, because i was too young. the fact that it was difficult to cut down to 100 tells me there are 100 worthy of being on, gasp, an anonymous message board thread.

here's the pathetic part...i post this list, to get some discussion going, which i sort of have. but mostly i've gotten comments on "what constitutes a comedy" and "the list is too big". well, if i had a list of the 50 best comedies, there would be 50. but this ain't that. it's like someone posting their favorite "10 seinfeld episodes" and someone else saying they're wrong, there are only 4 on their top 10. it's moronic.

and if you people can't appreciate real genius, or the sure thing, or broadcast news, or the money pit, or running scared, then i feel sorry for you. i stand behind every movie on this 100, and maintain that no other decade has this type of depth.

and tantric, this list isn't for you. i wouldn't expect you to [freely admit to] appreciate it.

and sidenotes about above....philadelphia story is one of my all time favorites, and certainly stands up today. and dc cab was one of my cuts. sorry.

Dude, don't get upset. If someone can't get down on Stripes or Spies Like Us, it's their loss.

"Doesnt hold up well." That is sad man.

I think Magnum stole the show in 3 Men and a Baby. "Ill give you $1000 to change her."

there is nothing i enjoy more than watching an 80s comedy... i am having a ton of fun introducing my kids to a lot of these movies as they become age appropriate.

"Just One of the Guys" would make my top 100 list. was that one of the last ones you cut?

Last I checked that did constitute discussion. If you expected everyone to heap praise and shower you with kisses then you're in the wrong place

the point is that we all know back to the future is great. as is goonies, and others i left off. this is why i put the disclaimer on the op. i wasn't looking to argue what does or what does not constitute a comedy. i was looking to make fun of people with crappy memories and $#@!ty taste. thank you for stepping forward.

You're joking, right? History of the World, Stripes, Fleth, Spies Like Us, Sixteen Candles, Fast Times, Airplane...

I have to agree with texasdago.

Some of the best movies ever made were comedies. Look at City Lights (circa 1931) that movie was made in black and white, and it was even a silent picture, and it's currently listed as one of the best movies ever.

I think you might just be talking out of your ass.

Great list with some of my favorites being Revenge of the Nerds, Major League, Better Off Dead, and Twins.

But no mention of Moving Violations? It's made by the same people behind Police Academy and stars John Murray...Bill Murray's brother.

You can watch the whole thing on youtube, and here is part one for those who haven't seen it:

As far as I'm concerned, you could've stopped after Coming to America and Caddyshack and still made a great case for the 80s being history's greatest comedic decade
