i have been thinking about this a lot this year. there has been a bunch of stuff i like, but i'm not sure if there has been an album (that i've heard) that clearly stands above all the rest. i have a top 5 as of now and i could easily place any of them at the #1 slot. oh well, still a month to sort this out.

I'd be shocked if Phoenix doesn't win this. Shocked I tell you. And I know why NOMAAA is adding comedy albums to this top 10. No sir, I don't like it.

rule #3 is dubious, suspect, self-serving and obvious. I hope lonely island was worth it.

I agree with BigO that there is not one singular stand-out. I'll be curious as to the consensus.

i would have had them on there in years past, but it honestly never crossed my mind. it comes to mind this year because there is some really good music on the album too.

  6. #6
that said, i would not be surprised if it makes my list if i am the only one that has it on there. that album is out last hope, no there is another.

patton oswalt's was in my top 5 at one point this year too. and listening to it twice today on the drive to houston it might find a place on my list in the end. nothing wrong with evolving a little. shit if i had thought of it back in 02/03 whenever shut up you fucking baby came out, that would have definitely made more than just my list. i hope. i like it as a good rule going forward, but if people say no dice i will change it back to no comedy. but incredibad has a lot of music and i listen to it like an album.

maybe i should have left rule three out and just added it to my list.

we're just giving you the business. nothing wrong with comedy albums being included, imo. If they're good enough, they're good enough.

there was debate in years prior if soundtracks were allowed. I think the board concluded that sdtks like Dan in Real Life or About A Boy should be allowed since it was all written, composed and performed by singular artists. That makes sense, because that is more like an official release.

What about soundtracks that have all new material, but are more of a compilation? I ask because the New Moon sdtk is fucking tits and there is an outside chance that it could be in my final 10.

  12. #12
New Moon soundtrack? Lonely Island? John Mayer? This has the makings of a super-fagged out list.

I'm pretty sure I've not listened to ten 2009 albums, but will certainly enjoy reading the list(s).

  14. #14
What a damn good year for music.

Maybe the top 10 comedy albums of the year can go in Nasty's.

  15. #15
yeah if someone wants to do that over there, go ahead.

as far as soundtracks go, they are allowed if it is composed by one singular artist a la about a boy.

  16. #16
Is lonely island really that good? you've been pimping it for most of the year.

  17. #17
Can you clarify on compilations? Dark Was The Night is probably in my Top 5 for '09.

  18. #18
    allowed.

    NOMAA has guidelines like FIFA

  20. #20
Henry's handball = inclusion of multiple comedy albums.

  21. #21
haha. read above. i am not opposed to leaving them out. its really a moot point since i will most likely be the only person that would consider putting it on their list.

  22. #22

Holy shit, I didn't know there was a new Q-Tip album. Loved his last album (The Renaissance). Going to pick up Kamaal/The Abstract now. Thanks.

  24. #24
    ^^

There's a chance you might have heard it - I think it was originally recorded around '01-'02, but wasn't officially released until this year.

Way jazzier than anything he ever did with Tribe, but when it works, it's greatness.

OK guys. I'm going to make a one time offer to Shaggy posters on this thread.

Richmond Fontaine, "We Used To Think the Freeway Sounded Like A River" on Arena Rock.

If you like Avett Bros, Jayhawks, Wilco, Son Volt, Silos, Jeffrey Foucault or Matthew Ryan, and you buy this album and don't like it, I will buy it back from you. Now, this is going to require you to purchase a hard copy because I'm going to want the CD/artwork (I'll give them out as gifts) but you get the picture.

Truthfully, if you buy it and don't like it, send the disc to me and I will buy it back from you.

I'm not a HUGE fan of the Avett Bros. I like it OK but to me, it has been done before. I just think the Willy Vlautin (lead singer/writer) for Richmond Fontaine may be one of the best writers I've heard in years. He has written a couple of good novels and is apparently one of the great guys. If you have heard Matthew Ryan or Jeffrey Foucault, I PROMISE you will love this record.

The guy who owns the label said that the band was the perfect mix of Wilco/Replacements.

Fine Print. I'm going to limit this to 10. I honestly and truthfully don't think anyone will return it but I don't want to cut into my booze funds too deeply, but I honestly feel this strongly.

I must've missed something with The Big Pink. I love the track "Dominoes" but I couldn't get into the rest of the album, despite giving it quite a few listens.

I'm a little shocked at all the mentions of I and Love and You and no Emotionalism.

    1. Miike Snow - S/T
    Passion Pit - Manners
    Fanfarlo - Reservoir
    Phoenix - Wolfgang Ama..
    Grizzly Bear - Veckatimest
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - It's Blitz!
Junior Boys - Begone Dull Care
Julian Casablancas - Phrazes for the Young
    White Rabbits - It's Frightening
    Doves - Kingdom of Rust

I know it's from 2008, but wanted to mention Friendly Fires S/T. It didn't get played until 2009 and was one of my favorites from the year, although, as mentioned it's technically 2008

I haven't paid attention to anything but work the last 5-6 months of the year so my list is probably lacking some of the depth of previous years. I honestly didn't get to listen to much new stuff since the summer. With that said, i'm solid on my list

you're shocked that an album released in 2007 isn't getting any mention on lists of the ten best albums of 2009?

some earlier in the year ... it had some FANTASTIC tracks, but not a top 10 effort, IMO.

    Finally got around to this.

    1. Ben Nichols - Last Pale Light in the West
    - Excellent EP by the Lucero front man. Stripped down songs about west Texas. Some reviews call it Springsteen's "Nebraska" meets "No Country for Old Men" - and they'd be right.

    2. Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit - self titled
    - Buncha beautiful melancholy by an excellent songsmith.

    3. Avett Bros - I and Love and You
    - Avoided the lengthy thread on here until I could digest the album. The praise is correct. But who chose the album art? It sucks.

    4. Slaid Cleaves - Everything you love will be taken away
    - Sadly, I haven't seen a lot written about this album, but it's fantastic. Some protest songs on there that still hold true despite "changes" in the political landscape.

    5. Neko Case - Middle Cyclone
    - I love her. She's got excellent chemistry with Kelly Hogan and Paul Rigby.

    6. The Low Anthem - Oh My God, Charlie Darwin
    - Some raucous songs that channel Tom Waits, while other songs sound like smooth velvet. Interesting dichotomy.

    7. Los Lobos - Los Lobos Goes Disney
    - Withstands repetition. By that I mean, it's about the only "kids album" I'll listen to with my 1.5 year old. I've listened to it so much that I'm continually impressed with their musicianship. Starts off with a Spanish version of "heigh-ho." If you have kids and love music - buy this. If you don't have kids, but love music, give it a listen.

    8. Sea Wolf - White Water, White Bloom
    - Master of the minor chords. Writes songs that feel haunted.

    9. M Ward - Hold Time
    - There's something about the airy echoness of his voice that I really enjoy. Love the duet with Lucinda despite me not really liking Lucinda that much.

    10. Israel Nash Gripka - New York Town
    - I'm putting this guy at ten to raise awareness about him. Got some pub on the blogosphere, and while this album isn't perfect, I can see him becoming something great in a few years. Give "Evening" a listen. I can't tell if it's a really good song, or just a Ryan Adams rip off. Either way, it's catchy.

Also considered: Vetiver, Buddy & Julie Miller, Corb Lund, John Doe & The Sadies.
