He's having a mound session soon. We are one of like 10 teams that are going to be there.
with the ownership talks stalling i wouldnt count on sheets being in a ranger uni.
I think the Rangers have cooled on him considerably. Rumor was he wanted a contract in the range of $12 mil. Rangers don't have anywhere near that kind of money.Originally Posted by C-Man

Not sure how much studying is really required. OPS+ has gone down every year since 2002, with the exception of a light rebound from 2006 to 2007.Originally Posted by UTCRP

My prediction 98-65 with a win in a one game playoff over the insanely upstarted Mariners that will propel us to our First W.S. (hey, if one is to dream, its before the season starts!)
Thats all I got, Go Rangers!
The M's will not win 98 games...you have to have at least some offense to win that many...Originally Posted by CutTheCrackJack

Texas 93-69 +6 wins from last year
Seattle 91-71 +6 wins from last year
Los Angeles 87-74 -10 wins from last year
Oakland 79-83 +4 wins from last year
I think everyone will agree that last year's suprise player was Scott Feldman....17 Wins was unthinkable before the season started. So, who will be this year's surprise?
My money is on Matt Harrison
I'm expecting Holland to have a nice season.
Pretty sure 98 wins will take the AL West straight-up without the need for a one-game playoff.Originally Posted by CutTheCrackJack

CJ beats me because he thinks he's part ninja part surfer. He's way too SoCal for me. He also gets beat WAY too often on his slider. His slider should very rarely be thrown for a strike and half the bombs he gives up is due to slider hangage. If he would just pump strikes with his 94mph fastball that darts all over the place he wouldn't put 2 men on and throw 30 pitches per inning. But it's not SoCal to pump the fastball. You have to be all finesse and fool people.
Having said all of that, his stuff is incredible and he's an asset to the team.
CJ is Nick Folk in a baseball uniform.
cj is good. period. he is the man that is brought into tough situations. i.e. 8th or 9th inning, close game, runners on. sometimes he fails. a lot of times he doesn't.
every ranger fan's brain is stained with his failures, including mine. but try to keep a tally of everytime he gets the job done vs everytime he fails. you will be suprised.
Good post Enjay. I agree, CJ is a Man of Action.
no doubt. check out his May, June, July and Sept. He was unreal last year but yes we are all stained by his failures and douchiness.Originally Posted by enjay

CJ is a good major league reliever. He has moments that make you cringe, but every reliever not named Mariano Rivera has those. I dunno what all this shit is about him potentially starting though. We already have like 289346 back-of-the-rotation type starters on the roster.

LHP with a 94 MPH fastball with movement and a plus slider? Yeah--I don't know why there's any talk of CJ starting.
the physical tools can't be denied. the fact he is a huge tool is what concerns most people. plus, as a starter you just can't go in and blow gas for one inning. you really have to gameplan, make adjustments as the game goes on and understand how the hitters are going to approach you. from a stuff standpoint he's probably the 2nd best pitcher on the staff after harden but cj has made his bed as far as why people question his mental toughness.Originally Posted by LonghornLawyer
http://texas.rangers.mlb.com/news/ar...=.jsp&c_id=texWith the addition of Lewis to go with Feldman and Harden, the Rangers have two spots left in the rotation. The leading candidates are Tommy Hunter, Derek Holland, Brandon McCarthy and Matt Harrison. Doug Mathis and Dustin Nippert are also candidates but will more likely be competing for spots in the bullpen.
The Rangers have also discussed the possibility of giving left-handed reliever C.J. Wilson and right-hander Neftali Feliz a chance to win a spot in the rotation. But signing Lewis gives them more of a compelling reason to keep them in the bullpen.
"Guys who don't make the rotation might be in the bullpen or they might be in [Triple-A] Oklahoma City," Daniels said. "One of the designs of this ballclub is to have as much depth as possible in the pitching staff."
Call me crazy, but this Lewis signing just may work. Here are a couple of his quotes:
Lewis said he does not throw as hard as he did before the surgery. Instead of 95-97 mph, he is around 91-93 most of the time. But he is a more complete pitcher with a larger repertoire.
He still throws a curveball but has added a slider, cut-fastball and the elusive changeup that he was missing when he first pitched for the Rangers. He also knows how to sink his fastball.
"Being able to command all of my pitches is big," Lewis said. "I take pride in being able to command my fastball and make them put the ball in play."
The strikeouts-to-walk ratio is huge. As a Major Leaguer, Lewis walked 5.1 batters per nine innings and had a 1.25 strikeouts-to-walk-ratio. In Japan, he walked 1.2 batters per nine innings and had an 8.02 strikeouts-to-walk ratio.
The highest strikeout-to-walk ratio in the Majors last season was 5.94, by Roy Halladay. In the past 40 years, only six pitchers have ever had an 8.0 or better strikeouts-to-walk ratio in a single season.
"When I was young, I didn't have command of the strike zone," Lewis said. "I tried to throw the ball by everybody. I don't know if you ever master the art of pitching, but I'm able to take a little bit off my pitches, sink the ball. For me, it's all about being able to locate pitches where you want to locate them. I've done that the past couple of years."
K/9yeah i never understood the CJ-to-the-rotation talk...made no sense to me at all...i mean just look at the list of guys who could be in our rotation

Feldman 5.4
Hunter 5.1
Harrison 4.8
Holland 7.0
Feliz 11.3
McCarthy 6.0
Nippert 7.0
Lewis
Mathis 5.3
Wilson 10.3
It makes a little sense
by these stats you'd have nippert and bmac starting over scott feldman. agreed cj's k/9 is exceptional but that doesn't always translate to successful starting pitching.Originally Posted by cmontexas

I don't know if he'll succeed or not, particularily since he throws a very high number of pitches per inning, but he clearly has swing and miss stuff, moreso than the others. If he can succeed as a starter, there is a high upside there.
I agree his high K totals are partially a result of pitching out of the pen. However, you couldn't convince me that Hunter would K even close to 10.3 per 9 coming out of the pen.
yeah that may be the case...but ill guarantee you that CJ wont have the same K/9IP numbers as a starter...as a relief pitcher, especially one like CJ, batters will only see you once, so they have to adjust to what you are doing mid AB...as a starter, batters will get to see you multiple times (hopefully)...so by the 2nd or 3rd time through the order, they have a much better idea of what to expect from you...Originally Posted by cmontexas

This was nothing more than trying to get in his head.
yes, cj will have the same role. tho i would prefer him be a 7th inning guy once neftali gets situated. cj, neftali, frankie would create many solid 7th, 8th, 9th inning situations.
i feel we have the best pitching situation in a long time. nippert and mathis will make solid spot starts and long relief when needed.
and if feldman repeats last year out of the gate and harden stays healthy, it should make for an exciting year.
btw, is anybody regretting the vicente padilla situation last year? he looked pretty good in the postseason.
Fuck no! There's a fucking reason he's not signed right now.Originally Posted by enjay

Apparently the Rangers are making a huge push to acquire Ben Sheets...
at least according to some dude in New York
what this tells me more than anything, is that the sale of the team is very close to the finish line...reports that i have read said that Sheets wants $12 mil/year and there is no way that hicks could afford to add that to the payroll of the team, especially with some of the other signings we have made. If we do sign Sheets, i really hope that it is a huge incentive based deal with not as much $$$ guaranteed...According to a AL source, the Rangers are set to make a “very strong” push at Ben Sheets.
It makes sense that the Rangers are going to go after Sheets with his connection to now Rangers pitching coach Mike Maddux. Sheets had Maddux as his pitching coach back when Sheets last pitched, in Milwaukee.
Maddux was in attendance during Sheets’s bullpen session on Tuesday, camera and all.
Joe DeMayo has heard that Sheets does want to pitch for Texas.
It seems more and more likely that the Rangers are the favorites to land Sheets at this point and time, over the Mets.
I'd offer him a 1 year deal, with a option for 2011 & 2012 based on incentives (like Millwood's option for this season)...give him a base salary of $5-$7 mil with incentives that can bring it up to $12-14 if he stays healthy...if Sheets is healthy, he is more than worth $12-14 million a year...

^i totally agree with this. i'd much prefer an incentives package rather than mulitple million gauranteed. especially in a injury prone player.
