Sheets would be amazing, but I just don't see it happening unless ludosc's theory is right. The Rangers simply don't have that kind of money, and the only plausible scenario for signing Sheets would be the team selling quickly and the new owner making a "goodwill" signing for the fans. Still, I give Sheets ending up in a Rangers uniform about a 1% chance of happening.
Supposedly he was very impressive in his most recent workout. The "majority" of teams had people there and the reports were good. Someone asked one scout what the verdict was and the scout said, "he was Ben Sheets".
Agree with this. We have so many arms with potential, that at least a couple of them have to pan out, right? Pencil in Harden, Feldman, and Lewis, sure, but then we have several other decent arms to pick the best two from. Lewis isn't going to replicate his ridiculous Japan numbers, but the projections I've seen have him as a 4.00-4.50 ERA guy, which makes him a great value for the money we spent.Originally Posted by enjay

Rumor has it the rangers may get sold by the end of Friday, that would definitely make the sheets deal more plausible.

One of the details that I just learned is that one of the members of the Greenburg/Ryan group is Bob Simpson. For those that don't know, he is the CEO of XTO Energy based in Ft Worth (which was just purchased by Exxon about a month ago). Since my step dad works for XTO i am already trying for free tix.

Cooper, a 25th-round draft pick of baseball's Texas Rangers, said Monday that he has decided to focus on a pro football career. He was set to receive half of his signing bonus at a scheduled physical on Jan. 17, which had to be put on hold while he was playing football.
"Football's definitely the route I want to take," Cooper said. "Toward the last couple of weeks of the football season, I knew that's what I wanted to do. That's my makeup, my mentality. I'm just a football player, not a baseball player."
Tim Tebow's favorite target started preparations on Monday for the Senior Bowl along with his Gators quarterback. Cooper was a second-team All-SEC pick and led the team with 961 receiving yards and nine touchdowns.
He said he has received indications he would be drafted anywhere from the second to the fourth round, but figures he has more speed than NFL teams think.
"They've got me down as a 4.5 in my 40," Cooper said. "The way I look at it is, all I can do is go up. I'm not a 4.5."
The 6-foot-3, 214-pounder plans to run it again at the NFL combine.
Giving up baseball won't be easy, Cooper said, but he is looking forward to having an offseason.
"I'm going to miss it," Cooper said. "I've been playing football and baseball my whole life. Now that it's gone and I'm only doing one sport, I'm going to miss it. But I think it's going to benefit me health-wise having an offseason for the first time since I was 13 years old."
Cooper said his roommate and quarterback, Tebow, was supportive throughout the decision-making process. The two hooked up during Monday's practice just like their college days.
"I thought he did really well," Cooper said. "The passes to me were good except one when he got hit in the back. Other than that, I thought he did well. He did a good job under center. He looked crisp."

At least it wasn't the Mariners. Even with a productive and healthy Sheets, I don't think the A's are good enough for us to really be worried about at this point.

no. wouldnt be surpised if he didnt win more than 10 games. we can get that out of our guys that are already locked up.
we gave the same $8m to rich harden who some wouldn't be surprised if he didn't win more than 10. were you on board with that signing? what makes sheets different? when healthy the guy has ace stuff. he's good for a trip or two to the DL but so is Harden. for another $8m i would have rolled the dice but it ain't my money.
Now that Sheets is off the market does anybody know anything about possibly signing John Garland? Would you want him in a Ranger uni?
with as deep as we can be at the lower end of the rotation, we could afford for harden and sheets to go on the dl a time or two during the season and still tread water enough to win the west/wildcard. as long as one or both are good to go for the postseason, thats where they'd be difference makers. plus, harden and sheets would almost be insurance policies for each other. if one goes down, we'd still have the other. if both go down, well tough luck. but hey, it ain't my money.
also, sheets and his agent may be thinking about future long term contracts and oakland's giant park may help keep his era down moreso than TBIA. in their eyes, his job this year is to stay healthy and have as low an era as possible so they can then ask for the 4 year 80 mm deal or whatever.
Now it's being reported that the Sheets deal is more in the $10 million range. That's too much, I'm sorry. Beane probably just wants to roll the dice on Sheets having a good first half and being able to flip him for great prospects.
Strong no from me on Garland. We already have tons of mediocre pitchers, all of whom are much cheaper than Garland is, and many of whom have more upside anyway. There are teams that have a use for a pitcher like Garland - a guy that will give you 200 innings of average-at-best innings - but the Rangers are not one of them, IMO.
With Sheets off the table, looks like we're pretty much going to go with the group we have. I'd like to see us still make a run at a guy like Ryan Garko in case Chris Davis continues to suck.
Agreed Beane just wants to flip. I also agree that I'd rather have a younger guy getting innings than go with a spare. Been there, done that.

i didnt say that i would take harden over sheets, but i would. harden pitched last season. also, i was saying that i did not think that it would be prudent for the rangers to spend another 8m on a pitcher that is injury prone, when they already have a couple in the rotation. why would you want to stack your rotation with expensive guys that might not make it past june?

that's cool man. just making sure your logic checks out. i would argue that we have enough starting depth (when have we ever had that) to compensate for one if not both of them going on the DL. then again, the rangers don't have the kind of money to buy such a luxury.
All we really need is one to hold the fort until Justin Smoak is ready to come up, which may be as soon as May or June...I'd like a backup 1b as well but it looks like there might not be any room or $.
I think a combo of Greene, Murphy, and Salty can hold that role decently enough until that happens...
eric karabell posted an article concerning sheets. obviously the article focuses on his fantasy possibilities, but a portion of it was worth mentioning.
"Sheets missed all of 2009 recovering from elbow surgery, and while I wouldn't go crazy with expectations here, the fact is when the right-hander has pitched, he has generally pitched fairly well. His career ERA is 3.72, and the last time we saw him (in 2008), it was 3.09. However, it has rarely been "performance" that has scared me about Sheets, but rather his durability. I've heard some people compare Sheets to Rich Harden, another brittle right-hander who did end up with the Rangers, and certainly there are similarities. Sheets made 31 starts in 2008, but before that averaged 21 starts in a three-year period. I doubt he still possesses major strikeout potential, which Harden does have, but Sheets remains interesting in fantasy, to say the least.
Another difference in Sheets and Harden is the injuries they have suffered. While Harden's health issues have been all over the map, Sheets is coming back from flexor tendon surgery in his pitching elbow. Previous pitchers who had this surgery didn't exactly bounce back to stardom, though Jason Jennings, Mike Hampton and Rodrigo Lopez aren't really fair comparisons to Sheets anyway. The point is, it took those guys awhile to regain command. And with Sheets, command is key. He ranks third among active pitchers in strikeout-to-walk ratio, and no longer can be asked to overpower hitters like he did in his early years. "

when Smoak comes up in May or June, is he your starting 1B? if not, do you want him sitting on the bench in the bigs getting very few ABs or at AAA playing every day?
if he is in the bigs in May/June it will be because C Davis is hurt or extremely $#@!ty in the month of April/May. he's capable of being pretty $#@!ty (based on last year) but he'd have to be really bad.
Let's not forget Smoak only hit .244 with a .360 SLG% in AAA last season (197 ABs)... Like Brad said, if he's up early, something has gone really wrong. We need Davis healthy & productive to get where we all want to be.
yep. smoak needs another full season in the minors if he isnt getting at bats on the reg in the pros. and with vlad at dh and davis hopefully hitting 250+ with 30 homers and 80+ rbi i dont see that happening. unless vlad stays healthy, they are out of it and they can trade him to a contender for prospects. i hope the last part of that happens.

i've never been to fanfest but i'm taking my boy just to run the bases. it's going to be cold as $#@! but he freaking loves the rangers so it will be worth it.

i'm personally all for this. i still think he has some value as a baseball player, but his skills are deteriorating. if we act soon, i think we could get some prospects out of him. or even another def. starter.
i really don't think he will ever have another great season. maybe 2 or 3 more decent seasons.
I think the real Hamilton is somewhat between the 2008 version and the 2009 version. Guys don't just show up out of nowhere and post a 900 OPS with 30+ homers. I'm not sure that his trade value is as high as many Rangers fans think it might be. He's cheap, for sure, but hasn't shown that he can stay healthy, is [s:d727377a4b]on the wrong side of[/s:d727377a4b] close to 30, and has precisely one and a half good MLB seasons to his name.
In any case, trading him leaves us with a gaping hole in the outfield. We are trying to win this year, and I'm tired of trading major league players for prospects for the future. I want the future to be now.
