No, heading to The Woodlands for the Judas Priest Concert. Yeah, I was expecting kinda a shorter line but then again it was Friday. Word is definitely getting out. JM brought a tray of prime rib out for the line to sample. Man, it was great. Will order next time. Had the brisket, sausage, squash, potato salad. All was outstanding as expected.
I went on Friday afternoon. I am on vacation which is nice and timing worked out.
I used to go to the original John Mueller BBQ joint VERY frequently and there was never a line 1/4 that size. Which I'm sure was part of the reason he had to close doors (if he had a line like he has now, doubt he would have closed).
I was pleased that John recognized me from the Manor Rd days. I guess I really did go a ton. He came by my table and said "been a long time how you doing". Surprised me.
And his location was very central at that time. So what has changed? The BBQ is just as good. Is this a timing issue? Did John have bad luck with timing and not BBQ is "fashionable"?
And for the record, I love the new location better than Franklin location -> if this is a "fashionable" deal, then John is close to the hipsters in the '04 area. I hope this means good business for John.
Now to the BBQ...
I got 1/3 lb lean brisket, 1/3 lb moist, 2 sausage links. The girl cutting is obviously a rookie because I asked for 0.25 lb of each and the first slice she put on before she even put it on the scale I was thinking "that's too much" and I can tell without even weighing it. It was over 0.4 lb and she asked "is that too much"? Ha, yeah. I was ok with 1/3 lb each which she got to.
Ok, back to the food, the brisket is just as good as I remembered it. It's up there with Franklin for best in the city. The sausage surprised me. I don't remember the sausage from his old location which means either he didn't have sausage there or it wasn't that good and I just stopped ordering it. Well, this was good stuff. Coarse grind. Thumbs up, easily better sausage than Franklin. Not as good as Smitty's (IMHO, best sausage in Texas and thus the world) or Kreuz however. And I wish he could get the links in the shape that Smitty's and Kreuz do but that's just cosmetics.
Unfortunately he sold out of pork ribs with about 15 people ahead of me. Then they came back and put "just a few racks left" and I thought I have a chance... and then like 4 people ahead of me they scratched that off. Son of a......
From the old place, I tried it all and many times. Brisket, beef ribs, prime rib, turkey, pork loin... I even had a T-bone there once. It was the only time I ever saw it on the menu and I said $#@! it and ate a t-bone for lunch Costanza style. BUT here is my request to John -> get the pork chop back! IMHO, his pork chop was better than the Big Chop at Coopers in Llano and that is saying something.
I'm on vacation this week too so I am planning on coming with my 11 month old son in tow. Probably head there early to beat the line and eat it at home.
They are closed today. They are posting all the info on their Facebook page. JMueller BBQ

Went Saturday for the first time and the brisket was legit. I'll be back when I have more time to try the other things.
went on saturday, we had a fatty brisket sandiwich, beef rib, and squash, potato salad, and the cole slaw. the brisket was great, but needed a bit more seasoning. beef rib was great, sides were excellent. my only gripe is that for the sandwiches they serve on regular toast and i had to pay extra to get the hamburger bun, but no big deal
Mayhap we should do that. If the 8:30 docket takes you past 11:00, you're doing something wrong. And, depending on the judge, just explain that you need to move it along, as the barbecue trailer line won't wait.I should have some time Thursday (and maybe wednesday, but I have to be at the 8:30 docket that day and you never know how long I'll be there) for lunch. Want to meet at the trailer for some smoked meats?
went this past saturday, got a link, 1/2 brisket, and a brontosaurus.. err... beef rib. jesus what a monster. everything was great. will go back soon
Prolly gonna have to be Wednesday for me - have a meeting on Thursday. I'll try to talk my associate into it, and if Hornian can extricate himself from combat with whack-job opposing counsel, he should join us.
I'll try for tomorrow. Hopefully I'll have a good story or two. "What, you mean I can't have a hearing in an abated law suit?"
Really bored today... do you think one or two of you can show up tomorrow?
Damn - sorry to let you down. We're working on it for tomorrow... :)
You guys really have to try the pork chop. Amazing.
Going back to Dallas on Wednesday PM; will try to be in line pre 1100...
SJJ, what time is the line forming right now? How deep does it seem to be @ window open?
werd. i want my mouth to make sweet love to your brisket and ribs. no homo.
unfortunately i don't have hours to spend on lunch so if i show up around 11ish, what time can i expect to be served? in other words, how many $#@!s will be in front of me?
Went yesterday. Moist and short ribs were great. I heard JM tell somebody that T-Bones are showing up next week.
Anyone going today? Hornian, done with your hearing?
Haven't been yet, b/c I have a lot of BBQ left over from smoking the last 2 weekends, but I have been enjoying riding by on my scooter smelling it. It is a great addition to the neighborhood.
Good grief I ate too much. Moist brisket was awesome, sausage was good, had a bite of pork chop - John threw one in for free. Good man, he is. At least 5 of us Shagsters were there today.
The pork chop was legit. I can't believe I ate the whole thing.
And for the line counters - one person in line before me at 11:45 - then by 11:50, about 8-10 in line. Never too crowded, although John says they are selling out everyday.
Anyone know what time they are usually selling out?
They were opened until 6pm yesterday, but have sold out sooner on most days.
I just want to be able walk into a place and get some goodass barbecue at about 2PM.
Got there around 11:20 today. No line.
Had the beef rib - great as expected, though I think I favor the fatty brisket. Had a non-dry sausage link - not bad, I like the dry better. Gonna have to try the pork chop and squash next time.
And in bigger news.... Big Red in da' house.
Maybe 5 people in line at 12:30, only out of pork ribs. Had fatty brisket, non-dry sausage and beans. Sausage was great but a little cold, brisket was very good as well. Definitely good stuff, especially considering I can pull it off for lunch.
