Travelers along Washington Avenue are curious about the construction on the building nestled at the intersection of Heights Blvd and Washington Ave. Stay tuned for Phil’s Texas Barbecue, opening this spring. The smoke signals from the pit will let you know they are open.

This is from the My Table Newsletter email. Anyone know anything about this? I'm hoping against all hope that this is good.

i read something once about how stringent air quality laws in Houston make it hard to operate a good smoking setup but i'm not sure if that's true or not. Hope this place is great but i'm comfortable being let down in this department unfortunately.

I've only done a small amount of environmental litigation, but if all those plants along the ship channel are allowed to spew out their emissions but a restaurant can't operate a smoker in the city, then we are truly fucked as a society.

I don't think it has to do with air quality, but there are some laws about open fires and smoke in restaurants. I dno't know the specifics but I've seen it referenced before as a deterent to good smoked Q in the immediate area.

I am really excited about this new restaurant as any new addition to the pathetic Houston BBQ scene is welcomed. I live close by and frequent the car wash and Porch Swing Pub (BTW, they have pretty damn tasty cheesesteak and it's become my replacement ever since Texadelphia on Memorial closed down) close by and have seen them slowly but surely build out this restaurant. I really hope this is going to be Central Texas style BBQ. I am not a fan of the sweet BBQ sauce/East Texas style BBQ prevalent in most of the supposed good BBQ places in Houston. Also, I hope they will be using a real pit as opposed to Southern Pride industrial smoker.

god, i hope it's good and not just a scene place. side note, their brisket isn't great but pizzitola's ribs & banana pudding are top notch. their deboned chicken place is also great.

I agree that Pizzitola's ribs are good. I am a brisket and sausage man myself and have found BBQ in my hometown to be lacking. I like Baker's Ribs and Papa Joe's BBQ the best but unlike when I lived in Austin, I rarely eat BBQ in Houston.

I don't like the Ed Hardy/Affliction wearing douchebags (these same morons were wearing Von Dutch trucker caps 6-7 years ago). That being said, IMO they don't dominate the Washington Ave. Food and bat scene or at the places my wife and I patronize.

Finally, Persian douchebags (if yiu need a mental image think of the 300 inspired South Park spoof) are as bad if not worse.

You know what's pathetic, the BBQ you can get in Manhattan (fatty4KSu don't get excited I am not talking about the Little Apple) was MUCH BETTER than what you can get in Houston.

That's not a joke or over the top Persian-style hyperbole. Central Texas BBQ and RUB have better brisket than you can get at any BBQ restaurant in Houston. I ate more BBQ when I lived in New York than I do in Houston.
