So I've had it with not going to Oktoberfest. I said when I left two years ago that I'd go back. So now we're doing it. Mrs.LL and I will be at Oktoberfest September 19-21--who else is in?

I'll be your designated Vespa driver if you need it.
No designated driver needed. Our hotel is walking distance from the 'Wiesen.
Oh, wow. I really, really, really want to go. I am seriously thinking about saying in. Do you have tent passes already?
No--what we did last time is just hop from tent to tent and sit down at an empty spot. Admittedly, that will be a little bit more difficult on Sunday, since it is the first weekend of Oktoberfest. But I still don't anticipate needing reservations. Worst case, you just wait a few minutes in line until they can accommodate you.
Do you normally talk groups of internet strangers into flying to Germany with you?
I try to confine it to 13-year old girls. But in this case I'm making an exception.
There is a Marriott Courtyard and a Sheraton Four Points on Schwanthalerstrasse, which is easy walking distance from the 'Wiesen. If you have Marriott or Starwood points, either one of those is ideal because while they do jack up the price of rooms during O'fest, they don't jack up the point requirements.
Otherwise, it somewhat doesn't matter. I would get a place as close to a U-Bahn stop as possible, but everything is going to be about 50% more expensive than usual.
Wow, I thought you were talking about Addison Oktoberfest. I was kidding about the flights to Germany, but more power to you if you can get some takers.
I work with a guy who grew up in Munich and he told me to avoid Oktoberfest at all costs unless I liked blowing shitloads of $ and I knew someone with tent/table reservations.
Like my wedding night, I might be in
Hmmm, 850 for 5 nights. Flying in on the 17th, leaving on the 22nd....
turns out i also have another group of friends from Dallas going to Oktoberfest. let me check to see what their plans are.
i might be in for this thing. i'm planning on going to London in September to watch some soccer games and get drunk. i could swing over to Germany after that.
i'll know soon. damn. this might really happen. i'll need to look into hotels and all that jazz.
I had plans to go this year with some friends, but my cousin decided to get married the same weekend.
Alright, I am in. I am convinced. I am going to try and get my aunt to go with if I can pry her away from USC football games. I know she has never gone to Oktoberfest and would love to go. Even if she cannot go, I am in. My God, what am I getting myself into.
Went in 06 and want to go back so hard. Only need to convince the wife.
Was there in 06 as well. Hell of a time. Thought Sat night was the best time to be in one of the big tents, but it was next to impossible to get in through the main doors. A cook showed us mercy and snuck us in through the kitchen. Any other day it was easy to get in and find a place to sit.
very jealous.
So I brought up the idea with the wife and was shot down in record time. That will be less than a week from when we're going to Italy and she refuses to let me go to Germany without her. (Read: She can't get time off of work) I burned up my guys trips too early in the calendar year.
But, if you need to get hotel points/airline miles quickly, you know where to go :)
Sweet!! Strega, I must insist that you wear a dirndl, however. I was squirrelly about putting it on - but I was SO glad I wore one once we got there, everyone had one on. Well - the girls at least. I'll let you decide if you hem it shorter and wear with white thigh high stockings and 4" mary janes. but it is a great look :)
Try here, this is where I got the 2 I have. www.mydirndl.com
In. I will order one. Do they come in red or burnt orange? Those are my two favorite colors!
This name just cracks me up, Asselfingen.

I think mine are some variations of red, with white blouse and black apron. I have a great pic of a meal not O-fest itself but it is from that trip. I think it was in Rotenberg (sp). However, I cannot host pictures at work. I'll try to post a few tonight.
We went in 2001, right after 9/11. I don't remember much.
I think we'll have an Oktoberfest at our house this year. With a tent and everything.
OK, I just emailed my husband to ask if he thought his parents would watch the kids for 3-4 days while we go to Munich. His brother lives in Germany so we have a family excuse as well.
Ahem.
Awesome U2b. I like how it took you exactly 5 minutes to talk yourself into Munich from "tent at the house".
Also, Strega, if you don't want to order online they sell dirndl's all over the place in Munich. Of course, that doesn't leave time for alterations if you need them.
Jive - you in or not pal?
we play @ tech that weekend, I might be in.
Shit, can two more tag along? We've been talking about going back the last couple of years, but haven't. Used to live there. I got pumped to go again after recently watching the Three Sheets episode in Munich. I'd have to figure out if our schedules would allow.
I was supposed to go last year with crazyhornsfan and other "real" friends but it fell through
I still have not booked a flight. I am thinking about waiting a little closer in as I know airfare tends to fluctuate a bit. I am consistently finding flights from Houston to Munich for under 900 though.
i think i'm in. just need to look into the logistics.
I can tell you with almost 100% certainty that flights to Munich will go nowhere but up from here. Airlines are more than willing to let a few seats go empty to hot destinations during an event. (Rio during Carnival, Madrid during the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona, Paris during Bastille Day, etc.) Your problem is that no airline flies direct to Munich from Houston. So, you will most likely be competing with an IAH-insert hub city for airline leg. Doesn't matter that you can get to Munich from EWR if the flights to EWR are sold out.
Your best bet will to look into airfares into London, Paris or Madrid. (Perhaps Frankfurt, but not usually) Easy Jet has $120 RT puddle jumpers into Munich. However, in the end, you will only be netting about $150-$200 in savings and adding a lot of headache. (I.E. If you are delayed due to weather you will miss your connecting flight on another airline and will probably be adding another connection) If you can use mileage, such as what you earned on CO through Chase, that would be ideal. Otherwise, I'd go ahead and book now.
Dammit how do I post pictures??? I'm trying to convince those on the fence with awesome pics of giant beers and brats from the last trip.
In the past, we flew in to FRA and took the train. It's about a five-hour train ride from the frankfurt airport to the Munich Hauptbahnhof, which isn't too bad considering it's damn near an hour train ride from MUN to the Hauptbahnhof.
Napoleon--we're going to be at the Marriott Courtyard, which is running about $400/night on hotels.com, but we're staying on miles. There are a bunch of hotels in outlying areas. For instance, there are a bunch of places out near Olympic Park that are charging only $150 a night. Olympic Park is a good subway ride from the Wiesen with a connection at the Marienplatz, but it's probably not more than 20 minutes and will save you some serious coin.
I am at the Best Western in the burbs. A 30-45 minute subway ride is worth only paying 118 a night. Win for me.
So Jive, are you in?
BTW, looking at hotels.com, I'm convinced there's something funky going on with them and Oktoberfest. Everyone of their prices are significantly inflated over what you can find at the hotel's own website. For instance, the Marriott Courtyard is $400 on hotels.com but only $240 on the Marriott website. It's worth doing some internet legwork with plenty of browser windows open rather than relying on hotels.com or some other website.
Munich is really a compact city. It has an outer Autobahn loop that is roughly the size of 635 in Dallas. The U-Bahn only runs inside that loop (with possible very limited exception), so if you can get a hotel near a U-Bahn stop, then you're not going to be very far from the action at all. Beware the S-Bahn, however. That is more of a commuter train that serves the suburbs, which can be very spread out.
Why limit yourself to one picture when you could have many:

I need to bump this thread (1) for purposes of reviewing the photos above and (2) to note that I leave a week from today. So who else is going?
