That's $#@!ing awesome. I wonder where they're building the course?
Sunday! Sunday! Sunday! Longhorn Speedway!
Holy $#@!, I never thought that could happen. Austin just reached EPIC status
There is an old racetrack at 183 and FM 812 in Elroy
HOLY $#@!!!!!!!! I always thought Austin would make a great place for f-1, or even a video game track. This is amazing.
I was browing the F1 site and blogs for my daily fix and saw a pic of the Austin skyline. To say im ecstatic is an understatement. Un $#@!ing believable.
Barcelona, Monaco, Istanbul, Shanghai, Bahrain, Montreal, Budapest, Sao Palo, Abu Dhabi, and $#@!ing AUSTIN TEXAS! Has a nice ring to it
Did RC offer the B/CS area?
major hurdles still, track still has to be built, event is 2 years away, could easily be a tactic by bernie in negotations with the promoter/venue he truly wants.
caveats - all vehicles must be hybrids and must install anti snail darter collision systems.
Very cool though. Another reason to make a trip back to Austin
I hope it goes off.
My son will be 4-1/2 for the first one and 13-1/2 for the last one in the stated 2012-2021 contract.
ask the Indianapolis Motor Speedway how this turned out....Ank is right, it'll certainly be a money pit.
Indy was a hodge podge circuit thrown together for F1. The gp had no chance to succeed there for any length of time. A gp with a purpose-built circuit in Austin will be bringing in loads of revenue for years to come. When all is said and done Austin should have the best road course in the country.
if we look at event economics from all the other races on the F1 calender as an example. revenue after paying Bernie's annual dowry is not exactly referred to as "revenue."
not if Tilke designs it.When all is said and done Austin should have the best road course in the country.
Wut?. Austin features that rare combination of ideal geographic location and beauty. Its fine dining, world-renowned hospitality and excellent transportation infrastructure make Austin ideally suited to host and manage an event of this magnitude
But yea, I think I just spooged a little.
And what? It'll get used once a year? Atleast Tony George had the foresight to bring in the motorcycles. But still, it's quite a waste of money to build something that'll be used once a year. I'm not saying it won't work, but it failed in this country once, and it very well may fail again.
If it's an FIA approved track, there's going to be plenty of action going on through the year. ALMS, Grand Am, AMA, World Superbike possibly since MotoGP took over Seca and now has Indy for a 2nd USGP, SCCA, various feeder series swinging through the south from VIR, Road Atlanta, Sebring, Barber...
and that's just professional series.
then there's track days for regional racing associations for bikes & cars

True. I guess the point I was trying to make is that its going for this to end up worse than a GP in Indy.
I actually really like Sepang and Turn 8 in Istambul is wonderful. Hes actually some nice circuits elsewhere too (See Atlanta Motorsports Park). The larger problem is with F1 restrictions on circuit design but thats another issue. Certainly it will have amenities far beyond any course in the US (outside of a few Nascar ovals) which could bring any number of other major series to Austin.
edit: you beat me to it.

In for the first Shaggy gearhead tailgate.
Sepang's decent because of the width, the layout's still classic Tilke. What about every thing else he's ever touched? Imola, Nurburgring, Hockenheim, Monza, turned history into a buncha chicanefests. Same goes for the majority of the new tracks. There is no such thing as a high speed sweeper anymore.
ok I'll be that guy
now we get to have another $#@!ing weekend packed full of retarded tourists.. yay
wood. i have it.
$#@! a purpose built course - i want to see an f1 car do 2222!
Hope bike lanes are part of the plans. :P
really excited about this. austin just keeps on getting better.
after calming down and looking at the whole press release, this is a loooooooong way from becoming reality.
all this means is that homeboy paid Bernie millions for an option. There's a 100M race track+facilities yet to be funded, purchased, and constructed, and a 30M+ event fee. Donnington Park is the most recent example of vapor-race that was "scheduled."
