i might try torrents, but wasn't there a lot of flak around downloading HBO shows? i recall a thread about someone's downloading getting monitored for downloading HBO shows. or are they more concerned with the new stuff?
Cable providers have started to really track and crack down on torrents.
sigh, i have posted remedies to the so called "cable companies cracking down"
I have not seen an episode of either show. What do I win?
Can you please repost these remedies then? I am planning to watch The Wire again in about a month, and unless something better comes along, it's gonna be Netflix. The problem with Netflix is that I can't get the discs fast enough, unless I get on the 6+ disc plan or whatever.
Some guy PMed me something once about watching The Wire online, but the PM didn't have a link, so I deleted it.
I assume the torrent remedy has something to do with private trackers? How do you know that HBO doesn't have people monitoring those as well? I'm a torrent novice if you can't tell.
Download Utorrent, download peerblock. Install both. Make sure peerblock is Enabled. Go to www.thepiratebay.org or www.btjunkie.org and look up whatever show you want. Open the torrent and it should automatically download using Utorrent. Peerblock blocks the main companies that are trying to catch you downloading stuff.
This is a sloooow torrent. It's a 48 GB file that is downloading at 10-14 kb/s. Estimated 10 weeks until completion. It might be Netflix for me after all.
I will admit that I loved LOST. I have tried to watch The Wire because its so highly recommended but the first few episodes on Season 1 didnt hook me at all. I know people say its like that but gets awesome so I might just have to push through it.
That was kinda my experience too. The first few episodes seem like any other cop drama. It's also pretty hard at first because there are a ton of different characters and you don't know anyone's name, let alone their role on the show. Once you pick up on all of that though, it gets a lot better.
Yeah that's what I ended up doing. Season 1 is 11 GB and is going at 165 kb/s for some reason. Thanks for the help though.
Well I finally got season 1, but I guess I wasn't paying attention when I did the download. This is an .mkv file, which I got the codec for WMP, but it's a real pain in the ass to make this playable on the PS3. I have to convert it to a VOB file first. $#@! that, too much work. Gonna look for another torrent I suppose. I dunno why people have to use obscure file types all the time. It's the same size, and it's a lot harder to play.
PS3 will play .m2ts files and they are usually in 720p quality so look those up.
And here is a link to some avi rips of the wire seasons 1-5 http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/4988...re_all_seasons
FYI...I was using peerblock AND peerguardian, both fully updated and functional, and HBO still tracked my torrent download and called my ISP (Grande) when I was downloading HBO shows. Be aware...peer blockers are pretty easy to get around. It really all comes down to whether your ISP cares when HBO notifies them.
The Mac Mini is an excellent multimedia device.
I started watching The Wire after many recs a couple of months ago. I am almost done with Season 2. Very gripping.
That said, I don't think it's the best show I have ever seen. Very good $#@!, yes.
And if I were to rank best shows of the last 10 years, I would put "Heroes Season 1" as the best season I have ever seen. I watched it on Netflix on demand / Roku about a year ago and it had me hooked big time. I watched season 2 and season 3 and completely lost interest early in season 3. I wish I had watched "Heroes Season 1" only and stopped there. And then 1st 2 seasons of Sopranos after that. Too early for me to judge The Wire. Let me watch the 1st 3 seasons first.
I have seen every episode of Sopranos and the 1st 2 seasons were masterpieces. It went downhill big time after that. I wish I only watched the 1st 2 seasons in retrospect.
Watch the first 4 seasons of the Wire then reevaluate your top season list.
You serious, clark? That said, I don't think it's the best show I have ever seen. Very good $#@!, yes.

My top five tv list for the last decade or so:
1. The Wire
2. Lost
3. Arrested Development
4. Mad Men
5. Dexter
However, if I had to choose only one show to have watched over the last decade, it would definitely be Lost. I'm not sure that there have ever been better episodes of any series than a few Lost episodes (such as The Constant). For my money, The Constant is the best (non-sports) hour of television I've ever seen.

I agree that Heroes Season 1 was very good....up until the finale at least. That said, for me it doesn't come close to certain seasons of LOST and definitely not The Wire. I like to judge The Wire by the whole of the series vs. season by season but individually Season 4 was incredible.
First time through watching the series Season 4 was my favorite. I've watched it about 5x now and for a while Season 2 had the title but I think I've now settled on Season 3 being my favorite. Pretty sure it's there to stay.
I tell you what, Boardwalk Empire is making a run up my list of favorite shows. I absolutely love it and would not be surprised if it's at least in the running with The Wire when all is said and done. Until then, The Wire reigns supreme, and it's not even close.
lmao at heroes being in teh same league as The Wire.
s1 of heroes was good for network TV. but it doesnt come close to the quality of HBO/Showtime shows.
Dexter is a great show, but don't know if it has the greatness every season. However Dexter season 4 with John Lithgow is a masterpiece and would put up against any season of any show.
I'm currently rewatching The Wire in the middle of season 2. This was one of my least favorite seasons and I've been kinda busy lately, so it's been slow going. I'm looking forward to S3 and S4, and I'll probably skip S5 altogether because it sucks.
I have been watching The Wire on the 101 network. Up to about halfway through 2nd season. I like it so far, will reevaluate the whole series when I'm done.
What is the general consensus on the ranking of the seasons?
general consensus has 4 and 3 as the best followed by 2 and 1. (the order of those isn't set in stone). general consensus has 5 as the worst (that one is set in stone).
my opinion:
3
4
1
2
5
I could barely get through season two of The Wire. I don't know if it's because I loved season 1 so much and missed Barksdale's crew, but I could barely hold any interest in the port characters. It did get more interesting towards the end of the season. I personally enjoyed Season 5 better than Season 2.
I thought Season 2 was great precisely because the port was the central focus while the story on the street still advanced. Showing how the drugs & women get into the country was very interesting. I would love to have seen more about Vondas and The Greek. Spinoff, anyone?
I think the only consensus is that 5 is the weakest. This is relative of course. S5 of the Wire still blows away any Lost or Heroes seasons. (and I really liked Lost and S1 of Heroes fyi.)
If I had to rank it'd go 3,2, 1&4 tied, 5. As I said above, the first time through the series I would have ranked S4 1st. If you haven't I highly reccomend multiple viewings. I pick up on new things every time.
You might be right. I haven't watched any Lost since the initial viewing.
