Which is surprising considering when they introduced the profiles for these cooks at the beginning of the season, it seemed like because of the show's popularity they were able to get older contestants with more impressive resumes than past seasons.
On an unrelated not, Tom C.'s blog entry says he's on vacation but will post something soon. Do yourself a favor and go read the comments. About 90% are people saying they won't watch Top Chef ever again because Kenny was cut.

that is just absurd. kenny clearly has talent that was in full display early. He celarly is a skilled prep chef, but in the end he got too cute for his own bad. He continued with the more is more theme, and got whacked for it. he seemed to think the more shit he put on a plate the more creativity it would display. Instead it was just a muddled, A-D-D mess. My lord you'd clog up your plumbing for a month eating a piece of goat cheese that big. I knew Kenny was done when Padma asked who was the executive chef on this, and tom with a roll of his eyes, and disdain in his voice says "kenny". he deserved to go home last night. that is not to say Alex and Amanda do not also deserve to go home posthaste because they do deserve to go home immediately. Still at this point Kenny at best was the 5th best remaining chef.
The funny thing about Top Chef is that when the chefs pick on someone, it usually helps the producers figure out which chef to keep for at least a couple of more weeks to add to the drama.
I haven't watched this week's episode yet, but Kenny's act was wearing thin. I have found myself pulling for Kelly and Tiffany lately. I'm wondering if this season is really that bad or is it that last season was so good that nothing was going to compare favorably? Perhaps some of both.
Would Kelly hard.
Anyone else really annoyed by every single person on the show calling turbot "turbo"? It's a fish from the North Atlantic, and the name is of Danish origin, hence the hard "t".
I'm sorry, but if I, as a totally amateur chef, know this, then I would hope some over-critical fuckhead from the NYT should know how to pronounce it. Or Tom Colicchio, who owns about 18 restaurants.
And the editing on this episode was just ridiculously misleading. I guess that's to be expected, but it's still kind of annoying.
Watched it last night. I thought they easily could have axed Amanda without ruffling too many feathers, but I think they probably wanted to keep the gender/eye candy ratio decent.
- Amanda has never cooked grass fed beef before? What? Mind boggling.
- You could probably entice Amanda into sex with a big bag of coke.
- Kenny has a lot of skill but yes, he needs to edit himself and he deserved to go home.
- Kelly reminds me of someone and I can't figure out who. Chloe from 24? No, that's not it. It's bothering me. It's someone who has the same nasally voice.
Tom's blog is up now and it's title is really funny. He's pretty riled up about all the angst that Kenny being sent home has caused. He also confirmed that Alex was never in danger of being sent home because he was on the winning team and that Amanda was saved by the sauce she made. You can tell he's not a big fan of Kenny and I can't really blame him since he's watched Kenny gain a lot of fans because of how confident he comes across on the show in spite of Tom knowing that most of the food he's cooked has been very average.

^^^ Tom is a bad man!
His finish is strong:
For any wanna-be producers out there, and for all conspiracy theorists: please realize that from a TV standpoint, getting rid of Kenny was a bad thing to do. Believe me, the show’s producers were not happy with our decision, because it brought to an abrupt end the rivalry between Kenny and Angelo. So if ever anyone still speculated that we judges make our decisions for any reasons other than the food before us, I hope this dispels those thoughts.
And for the record, I’ve always thought it odd that the show puts two chefs out in the front of the house and have long begged the producers to change that aspect of Restaurant Wars. One quarter of the chefs are responsible for dishes but forced to spend the evening out in the front of the house. I would much prefer to get two well-known front-of-house folks in that position and have them then comment on how the chefs’ preparation of the food affected service. This wasn’t a year in which anyone went home for his or her front-of-house skills, but I just wanted to say that.
Kelly, I would. Smash.
OK, outside of Leon Panetta, every one of the CIA people tasting the food looked liked a creepy neighbor that you wouldn't let your kids hang around. Jesus. I hope they don't monitor this board.
Damn, Tom was in rare form with the bottom 3 tonight! "Instead, you all just disguised yourselves as poor cooks."
Thank fucking Tebow dumbfuck Alex is finally gone!!
Tiffany & Kelly are definitely stepping up lately...
For overcooking veal, he definitely deserved the boot. Honestly any one of them could have gone home tonight. They were all pretty abysmal.
As much as I thought Amanda should of gone home, because she got French Onion Soup and made French Onion Soup, but shitty. Not only did you not attempt the challenge but you failed to make a good simple dish. However, Alex has been throwing shit at the wall and hoping it sticks for some time. So I'm glad he went home.
I hope Kelly wins, or Ed, or Tiffany. I don't care for the rest.
I think Tiffany and Ed might have a better shot than Angelo at this point. He seems to struggle when he can't cook Asian dishes. That won't be an issue in the final, but one of the upcoming challenges might get him before he gets there.
I'm pulling for Tiffany and have been since week one. She has been killing it lately.
Tiffany has diefinitely hit her stride. I hope it continues. I think once Amanda goes, it's anyone's game.
seems now that they are finally seperating out all the people who probably do not belong the season is improving. Amanda should be next to go then you get Kevin, Tiffany, Angelo, Ed, and Kelly to battle it out for the top 3. I think it is anyones game out of those. As of last night I think Tiffany is the front runner to win at this point. She has what 3 wins the last two episodes, and another top 3 finish in the elimination. Ed and Kelly seem to be right there too. ANgelo was in full melt down mode last night. He is worn out by the process it seems. He has to regroup or he will be gone. Kevin still seems to be all over the place. One minute he is making something great, the next something terrible, and then just as likley to be in the very middle with a dish that is not a massive furk up, but nothing notable either. Ed seems to be in the very good category. He is nowhere near the talent of the Voltaggio bros, or Kevin the mountain man, or Blake from season 5. However is doesn't seem to furk up too badly most days, and produces a lot of very good things. Kelly has potential to produce great food too. However she has had a few pretty weak dishes as well. It is getting better, but i think this is a season of the decent to very good. I do not think there is a budding culinary giant, or culinary greatness in this group.

So I've been watching Top Chef since the very first time it aired and there's never been a competitor named Blake (I checked wikipedia to confirm my suspiciion) - in season 5 or any other. I dont' say this to call you out, I'm just curious to know who you're talking about...
I'm guessing he means Richard Blais (Season 4 though)...
By far, my favorite episode of the season (but I'm a huge baseball fan, so bias noted).
Adam Dunn straight stole the show!
Padma looked amazing in that jersey.
Ed's math was impressive: 150 x 3 = 550...
Really, really was hoping Kevin would go home instead of Amanda!!
In case anyone cares, TC won the Emmy for Outstanding Reality-Competition Program...
I saw on PTI today Padma is 40. I didn't think she was that old.
Yeah, she was part of a poll on a Houston Sports radio station. The poll was which birthday hottie is the hottest...she's leading over Natalie Bassingthwaighte by a comfortable margin.
Damn, that really, really, REALLY sucks!!!!
I know it's not based on the season's body of work, but Kevin has zero business being in the final four.
Kelly better put the beatdown on these fools in Singapore!
And I'm as big a fan of Gail's jubblies as anyone, but tonight's judges' panel was as perfect as it gets!!
That was really unfortunate. Didn't want to see Tiffany go home. Man, if I had DVR'ed the show last night and then gone to the Chronicle website this morning, I would have been pissed. They have a screenshot of Tiffany on the front page trying to hold back the tears.
Angelo is the only one left with any semblance of talent, and he wouldn't have cracked the top 5 last season. This season is the suck.
i wouldn't go that far. I would say Ed has some talent, as does Kelly, and Tiffany did as well. Shame Tiffany went home, but i think that was a validation that the show really is based on each singular challenge. it was clear there were 5 good dishes, and hers was the one that had the biggest flaw. If it was based on body of work no way Kevin goes to the final 4.
Really sucks. She picked a bad week to be just slightly off her game. On any other week, she would have survived, but both Kevin and Kelly had it working. You could usually count on one or the other to have a misstep. Oh well. Still hoping for anyone but Angelo.
Ed was on Iron Chef this week as one of Cat Cora's sous chefs.
^^^ And Blais was her other one... Pretty damn strong team, too bad they got beat!
Loved the Singapore location and street food tour/quickfire challenge. Relived great memories of a visit there when my dad was working an overseas gig.
Nice to see everyone raise their game. Ed really kicked Angelo's ass--fuck yes! I'm sorry to see Kelly go, but I can't argue with the judges in this case.
Still sticking with my pick for winner... Not Angelo.
i agree that angelo's a little cocky, but ed comes across as way more of a douchebag than angelo does as cocky. at least the last few episodes.
still not sure what exactly kevin has done to get this far--i can't think of a dish he's made that really wowed me. still think tiffany should be in the final, and kelly really surprised me.
Yeah, that fucking sucks for Kelly!!
So that's two seasons in a row without a chick in the final 3, right?
And Padma's dress was EXTREMELY well-cut...
This was my favorite episode of the season. It is a shame that Tiffany went home last week instead of Kevin or Kelly, but everyone has been cooking their asses off, and at least Tiff went home with some cash ($20K I think), a trip to Paris, and maybe some other things that I can't remember. I think they definitely got the final 5 right. And at that point, there's not much to separate them. The judges are really having to split hairs to determine who goes, or they are at least making it look that way while the producers decide.
Ed has really grown on me. The editing does make him look douchey, but I think he is sincerely trying to be funny. There is probably a little genuine gamesmanship going on, and Ed admitted as much, but I think he is just enjoying the experience, not trying to be malicious. I don't find Angelo as unlikeable as I did earlier in the season, but I would still like to see Ed win. Much like Tiffany did, he really stepped up his game the second half of the season.
Kevin has been solid most of the time, but there has almost always been someone better. Still, he could pull a Hosea and do just enough at the right time to win.
They haven't had an African American or Latin American winner yet. I would hope that wouldn't be a factor, but you never know. Were this on Food Network instead of Bravo, I might buy into that a bit more.
The final should be interesting. I wonder how things will go for whoever gets teamed up with Mike Voltaggio. He's a badass, but he doesn't play well with others. I hope it's Angelo. That would be amusing. Ilan would also be good since he only cooks Spanish dishes and Angelo only does Asian.
