Avery Ranch got fucked last night. Crazy how much rain came down. Is it over, or are we supposed to get more of this shit?
looks like the force field around austin is back up and operational.
buddy of mine just sent me these pics from downtown belton...

wow is right!
That's Nolan Creek.
Looks like that 18 wheeler bit off more than he could chew. thx for the pics
I was out running errands at lunch and the sun actually peeked out for about 10 minutes. Of course, it was raining again by the time I got back to work.
almost 8 inches at the UT research station on lake travis yesterday. over 3 inches today

Round Rockers - FYI - The Great Oaks bridge over Brushy Creek was closed a couple hours ago when we drove by there. Huge tree branches had washed over the bridge railings, and there was some damage to the retaining wall on the side of the duck pond. Hairy Man Road was closed too.
That $20K leak was from a blown pipe behind the wall in the upstairs master bathroom. This little leak isn't so bad but it's just going to be a pain in the ass to have the leak fixed and the ceiling repair work done. Paging ROFLBOX or one of his Dallas amigos for the leak repair, if he does that type of work.
For the Bull Creek watershed, preliminary estimates are that it was a 250 year storm.
Let me get this straight, it just rained for 18-24 hours nearly non-stop dropping some incredible amounts of rain, and because this morning most of the rain hasn't been in the city proper there's a "force field" over Austin? The same Austin that averages 34 inches of rain annually, and has been known to receive 40 or 50 inches, sometimes more, rain in a year has a "force field" that keeps rain away? Okay, that shit's retarded. Go to El Paso, where they get 9 inches of rain annually if you want to see what a lack of rain is really like.
We survived! Our new utility room did end up flooding a little, but there's not too much of value in there besides the washer/dryer, and i think those survived okay - we had a rug in there that soaked up a lot of the water, so even though it got most of the room, it didn't get too high. glad we never put anything over the concrete floors. We soaked up most of the excess water with towels and have an oscillating fan in there now, just hoping the new drywall and stuff is fine and not going to get moldy or soggy or anything. What a frickin pain in the ass. The good news is, the rest of the house is pretty dang solid. The screened in patio was covered in about an inch or two of water by 1am, but it never came in through the sliding glass door. Our front and back yard both looked like lakes, and we had serious pooling on the sides of the house, but there's not a single drop of water inside the actual house (the utility room was part of the garage - we just added a wall and a door to make it a utility room).
I think I slept a total of 3 restless hours last night listening to the rain pour down in buckets and worrying. What a weird experience - I've lived in Austin a total of 10 years or so and have never seen anything like that.
After being in Houston for Allison, this was nothing new. I do realize now that most people in the area have never dealt with this kind of torrential rain before. I should update my resume to include "tropical storm/hurricane survival experience". It might make me stand out. That and a picture.
Rush Creek is going no lube at all on Woodland Park in Arlington.
Hell, it rained like this here last year too. I've lived here almost 30 years and we get a good flood about every 5 or so. Christmas 1991 was badass. Memorial Day in 1981 was horrible. My family lost 2 cars and a bunch of furniture that day.

may get another quick inch
the rain train looks like it is moving back towards Austin. Furk
We just got done with it out in Dripping Springs... you're welcome to it for a little bit. Furk.
It's a little confusing when one hears 100 year, 250 year, 500 year storm. It means that there is a 1 in 100 chance every year for such event to take place. Same with the 250 and 500 year storm (1 in 250 chance, 1 in 500 chance, per year). Not that it only rains that amount once every however many years the storm event turns out to be. The percentages should all even out over time but were in a span where they seem to be occurring on a more frequent basis.
i gotta agree with the force field..at least on the east side. i started out my day up north near wells branch, came home to the east side early, then made another trip up north and up to mueller airport shops and it never really rained south of 51st. been WANTING to rain all day on the eastside but not really had anything. we'll see what happens tonight.
yesterday of course, it wouldnt let up and rained all fucking day long.
If you look at the flood history, check out the Great Thrall Storms. Very similar. Tropical system hits south of the border, tracks up into Texas and just trains tons of rain.

Any of you assholes remember the floods in '07? Lake Travis topped off and Georgetown was under water.
I was there. We had to go out and GPS the high water marks around town (Georgetown). Today, we posted those markers on the map to give a reference point from that flood to this one. It wasn't even close. The high point in today's flood was typically about 10 - 15 feet lower than the 2007 flood. Lake Gtown rose something like 27 feet in 2007, today it only rose about 13 or so the last time I looked.
And back in 2007, only a few people had to be rescued from flood waters, 1 death (in Georgetown). Today, there were three guys at Blue Hole Park who had to be warned by Officers that their life jackets and $2, blow up "inner tubes" were not going to be OK to "toob" the San Gabriel. And there were numerous swift water rescues around town today.
should have wished them luck and notified the coroner's officeToday, there were three guys at Blue Hole Park who had to be warned by Officers that their life jackets and $2, blow up "inner tubes" were not going to be OK to "toob" the San Gabriel.
