Climbing a tree?

I know it sounds like a simple enough task, but I'm 46, I'm fat, and I don't want to win any Darwin awards.

I have a tree that I want to hang a bird feeder on. The lowest branch is around 30' up. I would like to attach an eye screw at the bottom of the brach and thread some thin guage wire through it for a pulley system to use when filling the feeder.

I thought about climbing up a ladder, slinging a rope over the branch, and then hauling myself up on the rope, but that doesn't seem overly safe to me, and I'm not keen on how to reverse my way back down with that plan.

Don't screw anything into the tree - just put the birdfeeder on a picture-frame-wire loop. Toss a weighted rope over the limb, and then use that to pull the wire over the branch. Make the wire long enough to tie off close to you for the pulley system (a good idea), and job done. Basically, use your plan, but no eye hook, just use the branch as an anchor.

Hmmm, simplicity. I like it. I do have some concerns though. The eye hook is meant to add stability to the set up. If I just sling the wire over the tree limb, I am concerned that it will not move easily across the limb when i lower and raise the feeder for fillings. Have you used this method before and had no issues? If so, what did you use for the wire?

I've done this using electric fence wire. It usually moves OK but it takes a lot of wire and be sure you leave it long enough so that when you unanchor the end tied to the tree you have enough to let the feeder down and still reach the loose end.

I've done this using electric fence wire.

Just make sure to unplug it before feeding the birds.

If you can hang the feeder low enough to feed without using a pulley, you can tie a loop on one end of the wire. Then, tie a weight to the loose end, and toss the weight with the wire over the branch. After untying the weight, you can thread the loose end through the loop. Pull the loose end until the loop is tight against the branch, and cut off the extra wire until you have the proper height.

I used this method to hang my son's tree swing from a brach 30+ feet in the air with nary a ladder used.
