I think the Jets special teams coach might be my favorite personality in Hard Knocks history.

"call it dick"
I love Rex Ryan
I loved Rex yelling at the agent on the phone. Then Tennanbaum saying, "Well, that's it" (or whatever he said) and hanging up the phone.
I really like Rex Ryan and his entire staff. I contrast this to last year's show with Cincinnati. That show was enjoyable, but more for rooting for Horns and watching in dismay at how they cut their players.
Good season.
I can't wait to see who they do next year.
looks like charlie tanner didn't make the team. damn.
awesome season though
They kept 4 RB, 3 WR, & 4 TE.
Woodhead will be their 4th WR until Holmes comes back, & Larry Taylor is on the PS with Washington...
I haven't seen last year's Hard Knocks. Hoe does Cincinnati cut their guys as opposed to the Jets?
For as much happened in the last week of the preseason, that show could have easily been 1 & 1/2 hours. At the beginning I thought too much Rex would ruin the show. I was wrong; cannot get enough and endearing at times to where he reminded me of my dead grandfather. Westhoff might be the best Hard Knocks character, even over Cunningham. Tannenbaum? I'd work for that guy. The way they let go of players was something other teams need to take note of. I remember when the Bengals were waking up guys to cut them and saying things like, "You're just not good enough." I'll be rooting for them to win the AFC East.
^^^ Agree with all that, but I thought Pettine & Schottenheimer were badass as well!
It was so much less personal.
The cuts were basically done all by one guy, who was kind of a lackey/equipment manager type. I may be exaggerating his position, but the guys being cut weren't sitting down in front of the Exec's and hearing it from the ultimate decision makers. It was cowardly.
Also, the equipment lackey did things like waking guys up at 5am to tell them to get their things and go. All in all, there was much less dignity in their process. The Jets seem to run a much more professional organization.
I don't get all the Rex love. I watched the series and come away thinking he's an even bigger douchebag than I suspected.

crazy ass note on pettine... he was head coach of a penn. high school about 8 years ago. his dad is a HS coaching legend. espn did a season long show on mike pettine (jr.) and his dad whipped his teams ass twice. they made jr. out to be a total prick, just a total hot head prick. seems like he's chilled out quite a bit.
funny story about the father and son documentaries, the father agreed to do a documentary movie with smoe independent filmmaker. a few days later espn contacted him to do the same but he kept his word. espn then just went with his son's school.
Mark Sanchez calling plays was great. I bet it really gives him a good perspective on what goes on in his headphone this season.
I wonder if other teams do this?
Damn, I actually remember that ESPN show, but I would have NEVER put two-&-two together!
great season. i really like the jets GM.
rex losing it on the phone was great.
Here's a clip from from the documentary about the Pettine's last game against each other...
Amazon link.
And bluto's memory is stellar, the show about Jr. was called "The Season", & included footage of that game...
Great ending.
OK Revis, break us down on 3. 1-2-3 Jets!
I came in expecting Rex Ryan to be a total dick like this dad, but he's not. He cusses alot, but it's rarely at someone. He doesn't yell anywhere near as much as I thought he would. He seems like he doesn't suck. The gm seems like a good dude also. The only person I didn't really like was Woody Johnson.
I came away liking Woody Johnson a lot. He obviously cares a lot, but didn't get in the way and let his people work stepping in only when they asked. I also think the way the Jets handled player personnel moves is a reflection of Woody's style. He really won me over with how he handled the Revis deal in the final episode.
Lots of win in this entire season. Rex on the phone was classic, he is a football guy and he was sick of the shit. It was awesome when Schottenheimer said he would love to win a Super Bowl and give his ring to his dad. Glad to see Woodhead make the team, he deserved it. Davis the fullback was an asshole. The Jets organization was first class, I enjoyed all of the front office people this year. I will be pulling for them to win their division as well.
I want to see more terminator on special teams...I'll be watching for him this season. Glad woodhead made the team. Rex is awesome. "Let's call it dick"
I agree. I am now a jets fan. Rex Ryan and Westhoff were awesome. Both were hilarious. I will be rooting for Terminator for sure.
Great season, Rex gradually cut out some of the excessive cussing from the first episode but not to say the man doesn't like to cuss. I thought the 1st episode he was just doing it for no reason some times. Every episode since I think it was more purposeful if that makes sense. Davis better start busting his ass or be really nice to his gf/fiance, dude thinks he's got it made.
Not enough cookies/snacks in this one though.
find me the quote the Rex gave to the agent on the phone....I was dying laughing at that point. Great season, go Jets.
Sucks for Tanner. Hopefully he gets picked up on a practice squad somewhere and can get a second shot later this year or next year.
I don't know how much he cut out the cussing or how much HBO cut out.
I really hope HBO didn't script the whole Revis thing. I mean, it was almost too good to be true for the TV guys. From the first episode, the Revis signing was one of the main story lines. Then, in the Hollywood ending, he returns. If it turns out that HBO had a role in the holdout to make a better story, well, that would pretty much end my faith in mankind. Or maybe I should just take off the tinfoil hat.
I don't think there's any way the Jets would have went along with that and if the NFL ever found out they would shut Hard Knocks down.
i'm sure the jets would rather have their star db in camp getting ready for the season than make Hard Knocks look good.
Oh I don't think the Jets would have known about it. But HBO and Revis' agent?
no way HBO scripted a player hold out. the NFL would never go along with that
I'll throw on my tinfoil hat as well because I think most sports are rigged... I would imagine HBO had to strike a side deal with Revis and it may have had some incentives. Couple that with the fact no one enjoys training camp I would almost be surprised if Revis didn't know exactly when he'd get the deal done.
Then it should not be a surprise that a deal did not get done until right before the season and immediately after camp.Couple that with the fact no one enjoys training camp I would almost be surprised if Revis didn't know exactly when he'd get the deal done.

"here comes some slap dick player we just picked up."
i came across really liking mike tannembaum. definitely my favorite gm from all the years i've watched this show. i already liked rex ryan and this only made me like him more. woody johnson seemed like an ideal owner as well, involved, but not too involved. he let the football guys make the football decisions. i think that as long as those three guys are in charge, the jets will be a solid organization.
and i liked sanchez calling the plays as well. i have no idea if other teams do it or not, but it seems like such a simple idea that can really open the qb's eyes.
I get pretty fed up with players doing that crap while still having years on their current contract. I would respond just like Rex.
are UT football games rigged too? Hard Knocks would have still be outstanding with or without Revis. Rex Ryan and everyone else made this seasonI'll throw on my tinfoil hat as well because I think most sports are rigged.
no way the NFL allows a deal to go down where a holdout is scripted....the guy misses all of camp...and then gets a big money contract just because HBO thought it would make a nice story
the NFL doesnt even need hard knocks at all. HBO is prob lucky they allow that kinda access to begin with
Good article on Ryan.
