35 years ago -- Edmund Fitzgerald foundered

I was barely 6 years old, living in Minnesota, when the Mighty Fitz foundered. I don't know if the impact was felt this far south but I can still remember the reports on AM radio throughout the ordeal.

"The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down of the big lake they call Gitche Gumee
The lake it is said never gives up her dead when the skies of November turn gloomy"

Awesome video. Big fan of the song, as well.

I actually had no idea that wreck happened the year before the song came out. I always assumed it was something that happened way before I was born.

The theory is, a set of 3 rogue waves hit her from behind, and she rode the crest straight into the trough and just kept going straight down to the bottom, breaking her back on the sea floor.

of all people, The Hardline (on The Ticket) will pay homage today. from a 2007 article:

For more than a decade, Mike Rhyner and Greg Williams, host of the Hardline sports talk show on KTCK radio, have memorialized the sinking of the largest ship to ply the great lakes. This unlikely homage has become an annual event at the station with numerous experts and novices calling in to take part in the tribute.

That ship always looked exceedingly strange to me with the positioning of the bridge on the forecastle.

It's probably my Texas upbringing, but I never really think of the Great Lakes as particularly large bodies of water. Intellectually I know they are. I can read a map and I've seen them plenty of times. But whenever I hear of a storm on the Great Lakes, my mental image of of a gullywasher on Lake Travis.

I saw a documentary on the wreck - where they were trying to figure out what happened - whether a hatch was left open or not. Pretty wild story.

There are many theories as to why the Fitz foundered. The fact that it lies in Canadian waters makes it many times more difficult to get authorization to explore the site of the wreckage. There is an old Native American legend that says the water of Lake Superior is so cold that if one were to drown their spirit would forever be frozen at the bottom & never reach the next world. Lake Superior is something else, if you've never seen it. I'm sure people are aware that they're actually inland seas, but you can't grasp their magnitude unless you see them. The Duluth/Superior shipping lanes are just incredible to see. Huge barges loaded with taconite from the Mesabi range (where the ground is so iron rich the water in the lakes have a rusty hue) or grains from the midwest move in & out. As a kid seeing those ships when we visited relatives who lived in the area was always stunning & slightly terrifying. They were huge, and the water was always choppy from the fronts.

About 20 years ago I drove from Texas up to the Twin Cities w/ my first wife (we were dating at the time). We then headed to Duluth & drove along the south shore of Superior all the way to Marquette, MI where my sister & her family were living at the time. It was the 4th of July & the temps were barely in the 60s along the shore. We spent a night in Washburn, WI at a little motel right on Chequamegon Bay. There was a little nature trail & park right off our front door. I tried wading into the water but didn't get more than 2 or 3 steps in before my feet were numb from the cold.

    It's beautiful country.

Grew up in the UP of Michigan. Those are seas in every form of the word. I would spend half my summers on the gulf down here and half on the great lakes. As was said above. Beautiful country.

The History Channel has a great documentary about the sinking. The sad part was there was a ship in front of them and saw the Fittz disappear from radar.

This is the truth. I'm always reminded of the quote by Bob Dylan who once said "whenever I hear Gordon Lightfoot sing a song I wish I could go on forever."

Lightfoot has apparently changed one of his lines to reflect the new theory on why the ship sunk:

UNDATED (WJRT) -- (11/10/10) -- Thirty-five years ago today the Great Lakes ore carrier Edmund Fitzgerald sank in a horrific storm, taking her 29-man crew to the bottom of Lake Superior.

As family, friends and supporters of the crew gather tonight to remember the men, the song that helped make the wreck so famous has some new lyrics.

Gordon Lightfoot's song about the Edmund Fitzgerald is almost as much a legend as the ship itself. It's a song that routinely shows up on radio stations this time of year.

"I would guarantee you, every November 10th since I started in 1987, we get a dedication for the "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald," said J. Patrick from CARS 108 radio.

The investigations into the sinking and documentaries done about it in recent years have gotten the attention of Lightfoot. He says, as a result of recent findings, it was waves and not crew error that led to the shipwreck.

Many investigators since the sinking now say the ship likely hit bottom, tearing a hole in her hull. That, coupled with two rough waves, sent her to the bottom.

Those findings prompted Lightfoot to change the lyrics in one verse of the ballad. This is how it was originally written and recorded. "At 7 p.m. a main hatchway gave in. He said, fellas it's been good to know ya."

Lightfoot and others like Dan Hall, who routinely perform it, are singing the updated version. "At 7 p.m. it grew dark, it was then he said, fellas it's been good to know ya."

"That's the way Gordon has it now. That's the way I'm going to do it now," Hall said.

Lightfoot says he has no plans right now to rerecord the song with the updated lyrics. You'll only hear it live in concert and at Dan Hall's performance of the ballad tonight at the Fitzgerald memorial service at the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum just 17 miles from the final resting spot of the Fitzgerald and her crew.

huh??? there are a lot of ships like that.... in fact, many of the newer ships designed for carrying super heavy cargoes are designed that way such that the view from the bridge isn't obscured by the cargo.. and there are also countless roro ships with the superstructure at the fore of the ship as well... perhaps I just take it for granted since I'm in the business though..

and the Great Lakes are huge for shipping... it's super expensive to get ships in and out of there, but it happens all the time... tons of grains and steels coming out of that area and you'll get some O&G cargo coming inbound for Canada as well as windmills for the great plains...

Many of you who grew up near the gulf may not appreciate the awe and majesty of Lake Superior, but let me tell you...as a little boy in Northern Illinois, visiting that lake was jaw-dropping. Lake Michigan was big, but Lake Superior blew my little mind. It was so vast, even had it's own islands. To boot, my father would tell me, it is over a quarter-mile deep at it's deepest part. I couldn't wrap my head around that as a boy, so he would tell me, "You know the Sears Tower downtown? It's as deep as that building is tall." Again, my little mind was blown. I knew the ocean was deep, but here was this lake surrounded by places I'd been and knew; but in the middle, out there, was a vast body of water where no land was visible for miles and miles. That freaked me out. And at the bottom, was this boat...along with hundreds of smaller vessels from centuries of explorers, merchants, and sailors.

I'm from Dallas--what the hell do I know about shipping? All I know is that the bridge is supposed to be aft and that anything else looks strange.
