    The problem with this is when you grab it, the point didn't likely change directions (in the pocket) but it can roll over. So you have to roll it in the palm to open it.

    This is the primary reason you want to have a knife that hangs point up when clipped in the pocket. But as ajax said, "not interested in using for self defense" so it is a moot point. Guess the OP would need to clarify.

    I have never cut myself drawing a knife. But the same can be said of me drawing a pistol.

    With constant pressure opening method, you can place the backside of the blade on the target, move your hand away as you force open it with your thumb, with continued pressure on the target. When the knife locks in place, you are already at the point to stab, then turn, slice on the withdraw stroke.

    Continue until threat is bloodless or retreats.

    Now I would be close to passing out from lack of air, and my thumb is bleeding, so my ability to reduce the threat is less than optimal.

    Guess, I have to depend on the next tool, which would be pistol and shoot the $#@!er at contact distance. Damn, that was loud, and now I got all his guts, blood, and lunch all over my new shirt.

    You get the point.

    Edge retention is not the only benefit. So a 4" blade has the same cutting surface as 5" ~1%
    Or you could just pull a trigger.

    Yeah. I don't really want a knife for personal defense. As I said in the OP, I needed to replace my lost Buck 110 which I used for primarily for whittling. Then, this thread turned me on to the coolness of other knives that are a bit more lightweight so I bought a Buck 112 for whittling and a couple others for no real reason. One of them turned out to be girly, sadly.

    I can definitely see how people collect these things.

    Let's get back on track. $30-50 knives are great, I have a few.

    But if I'm going to talk "best" pocketknives, the discussion needs to start with the Emerson CQC-7B with the wave feature.

    It's a beast.

    Well then the only replacement for a Buck 112 is a Buck 112.

    I personally us a 110 for that purpose. Heavy, good blade, lock back, just works.

    Either way, I hope my detailed analysis of Self Defense Folding Knives was useful for someone.

    It was useful, man. Hell, I don't carry my .357 on me at all times and a knife might save my life someday.

    By the way, the 112 is just a tad bit smaller and less heavy than the 110. That's why I chose it. I'm happy I did.

    Don't get me wrong, your post was very much appreciated. I know I would just find myself saying "now what did RagMan say" if put in a SD situation with only my knife. lolz.

    I don't take the safety off until a pistol is out of the holster. This knife was simply not meant to be kept in a pocket point up. Good scar to remind me of this...

    So what is considered an illegal knife in Texas? What if you are out camping with a blade over 5.5"?

    This thread got me looking. I have a cheap Browning pocket knife and I don't really want anything bigger than it otherwise I won't use it.

    But found this. New Spyderco Ambitious. It's a smaller version of the Tenacious and Persistence.

    (D) sword; or
    (E) spear.
    (7) "Knife" means any bladed hand instrument that is capable
    of inflicting serious bodily injury or death by cutting or
    stabbing a person with the instrument.
    - 46.03. Places weapons prohibited.
    (a) A person commits an offense if, with a firearm, illegal

    This is far from correct. If you have a knife that is loose enough to fall open, then you have a knife that is faulty in the first place. If it is tight enough to not fall open, then there is no safety issue.

    I usually don't say "ask a cop" as I have little respect for most of them. But standard equipment for most of them is a folding knife, Spyderco Delica or Police being the major choice.

    That lack of respect is due to little to no training, continued training, or bad training when they get it. So for the most part, Cops are ill-trained, and ignorant. But that just strengthens my case on the knife. More of those dumb $#@!s would be cutting their femoral or at least their $#@! off, if the knife "didn't work" or it was unsafe. So basically you take hordes of dumbshits, put knives in their pockets, and they don't get hurt, then saying "it was not ment to be kept" is pretty much not valid.

    But you did not argue the draw stroke, and how with point down, you have to flip the knife. This leads me to believe you have done little defense training with knives. Just sayin'

    Not sure how I am so late to this thread, but this is definitely towards the top of the list if you don't want to spend a lot. Spyderdco and benchmade are my two favorite pocket knives by far and I have way too many knives. Will try to get a pic of all the knives up later tonight. It's dumb.

    Green bean here. I presume that's a Spyderco but which model is it? That just looks totally badass.

    Sorry, this thread got me all excited. Personally my favorite, practical (not like the civilian above) EDC knife is currently the Spyderco Caly 3. Haven't felt a knife that fits your hand better, is more useful, and looks as good. They also make a 3.5 now (longer blade), but I have been adding to the kitchen knives and haven't gotten one yet. If you aren't addicted to knives you should leave this thread now. It's like crack.

    caly 3:

    Mine was a gift, but yeah, it's pretty high for something with no purpose other than $#@!ing someone up. The good thing about spyderco is that they have knives at pretty much every price point and quality. You will get what you pay for, but they should all be descent. I haven't tried much below the level of the endura or delica, but they are both really nice knives in the $50 range. If you want something to beat up and be really rough with I would buy a cheaper spyderco or even a kershaw or something, but for something. Hard to say. Just really depends on what you want a knife for. That's why it's nice to have lots of them.

    I have an amazon GC and already have $100 in camping/fishing stuff loaded in the cart. You bastards are going to make me end up dumping all that for another knife probably. Thanks.

    My brother was lucky enough to get on John Young's wait list many years ago and has a Stag Hunter like the top one and two others that haven't been made yet.

    I really wouldn't mind owning one knife that's just dedicated to $#@!ing someone up and that looks like a good candidate. I'm giving it strong consideration.

    Some of the reviews on Amazon:

    I bought this knife as a primary defense weapon, due to some unique circumstances. It will go through thick parkas or leather like you were opening up a zipper! This knife has a reverse "S" blade that is intended to be used like an oversized claw. It has a deep curve and full belly. The blade (VG-10 hollow-ground) comes fully serrated and wicked sharp. Because of its distinct features, it's not intended for EDC. It's a serious blade, in case you get into serious trouble.

    * Blade Material: ATS 55 Stainless Steel
    * Blade Style: Fully Serrated Hollow Ground Hawk bill
    * Handle Material: G-10
    * Locking Mechanism: Lock Back
    * Blade Length: 4 1/8"
    * Handle Length: 5 3/16"
    * Overall Open Length: 9.125"
    * Weight: 4.5 oz.
    This is a large, well....... weapon. Make no mistake, this knife is made for one thing. Go to the Spyderco web site and read it. Yes it CAN cut rope, but this is overkill if that's want you want. I really bought it as a unique knife for my collection. To carry the Civilian is for self defense. There is 100% no doubt in my mind that this knife will perform it's intended purpose well. I cut myself with the tip of the blade with hardly ANY pressure. I love it. It is def not an EDC. But I would trust it with my life.
    I am an ex private eye, and when I was working I got into the habit of carrying items that might be helpful. I wish I'd had this thing, back then. This knife is bigger than it looks, and 10 times as scary. It is unbelievably sharp. I now carry it as a companion tool with my concealed .45 here in the wilderness of New Mexico. Never know when I might have to cut up a cactus, or a seat belt. Etc. I recommend this knife. I shall work it into my next thriller novel.
    This knife is exactly what it says it is. Also, can be quite useful for cutting salami, opening envelopes, cutting red tape. Very expensive. Cool factor high. Could get three tools/weapons for same price of similar quality and function. Unnecessary. I could've taken a 20% restock, but became strangely attached to it. So . . . don't get drunk and look at it, cause you might buy it.
    I thought the last post was pretty applicable to my situation.

    Out of my price range for sure, but that is an awesome knife. My dad, who got me into knives, had a chance to buy a Loveless pretty right at one point and didn't. He is still kicking himself. Your brother has a nicer knife that anyone I know.

    They make some smaller similar blades. I even saw someone earlier in the thread who had posted one. Those aren't bad either if you don't want to drop the $175, but the civilian is in it's own class. Thing is big and nasty. It's fun to break out to open a bag or jerkey or cut a string on occasion too. If you get it be careful with the tip, it is wild.

    Mine came in a little case with a piece of paper that said this (or something similar) inside:

    In the 1990s Spyderco was approached by a specialized branch of U.S. law enforcement about making a knife for their undercover agents. These plain-clothes LEOs found themselves in situations where they often could not carry a firearm but carrying a knife was not a problem. Most had no formal training in self-defense tactics or MBC but as a last resort could use a blade to protect or extricate themselves from a life-threatening situation. This was how the Civilian model came to be.

    The Civilian has a patented reverse "S" blade that's intended to be used like an oversized claw. The tip is ground to an ultra-thin profile. Deeply curved and full at the belly, the VG-10 hollow-ground blade excels in slicing and is available fully SpyderEdged. Because of its distinctly specialized features it is not intended or designed for general utility or everyday use. Curved in all the right places for ergonomic use and retention of the knife, the handle is black G-10. Mounted for tip-down carry with a custom curved black clip, the knife rides deeply and unobtrusively in a pocket. One of the most specialized CLIPITS in the Spyderco line-up, the Civilian is available in limited quantities.

    As far as I know. According to this site you can carry 5 1/2 inches.

    http://knife-expert.com/tx.txt

    this seems pretty complete too, and matches the 5.5 inch rule.

    (6) “Illegal Knife” means a:
    (A) knife with a blade over five and one half inches;
    Rainer v. State, 763 S.W.2d 615 (Tex. App.-Eastland 1989, pet. ref’d) To determine
    length, measure entire length of blade past handle, not just the sharpened portion of the
    blade. Same result in McMurrough v. State, 995 S.W.2d 944 (Tex. App.-Ft. Worth 1999).
    (B) hand instrument designed to cut or stab another by being thrown;
    Albert v. State, 659 S.W.2d 41 (Tex. App.-Houston [14th Dist.] 1983, pet. ref’d) Martial
    arts throwing star qualifies as “a hand instrument designed to cut or stab another by being
    thrown”.
    (C) dagger including but not limited to a dirk, stiletto, and poniard;
    Armendariz v. State, 396 S.W.2d 132 (Tex. Crim. App. 1965) A knife slightly over seven
    inches in length when open, equipped with a double guard, blade that locks open and is
    sharpened on both sides of blade for over an inch meets the definition of a dagger.
    (D) bowie knife;
    Mireles v. State, 192 S.W. 241 (Tex. Crim. App. 1917) A knife in a scabbard with a blade
    nine inches long and a handle four or five inches long described as a butcher knife was
    embraced in the term “bowie knife” as defined by the Penal Code.
    (E) sword; or
    (F) spear.
    (7) “Knife” means any bladed hand instrument that is capable of inflicting serious
    bodily injury or death by cutting or stabbing a person with the instrument.
    (8) “Knuckles” means any instrument that consists of finger rings or guards made
    of a hard substance and that is designed, made, or adapted for the purpose of inflicting
    serious bodily injury or death by striking a person with a fist enclosed in the knuckles.
    (9) “Machine Gun” means any firearm that is capable of shooting more than two
    shots automatically, without manual reloading, by a single function of the trigger.
    (10) “Short-barrel firearm” means a rifle with a barrel length of less than 16
    inches or a shotgun with a barrel length of less than 18 inches, or any weapon made from
    a shotgun or rifle if, as altered, it has an overall length of less than 26 inches.
    (11) “Switchblade knife” means any knife that has a blade that folds, closes, or
    retracts into the handle or sheath, and that:
    (A) opens automatically by pressure applied to a button or other device
    located on the handle; or
    (B) opens or releases a blade from the handle or sheath by the force of
    gravity or by the application of centrifugal force.
    This definition includes a “butterfly knife”.

    There is only one way to go for a personal defense knife

    http://www.waspknife.com/

    As divers, we all know what the effects of compressed gas are underwater. Our training teaches us that our lungs would burst from over-inflation if we held our breath and rose to the surface. This principle is key to the effectiveness of the WASP Injection System.
    This weapon injects a freezing cold ball of compressed gas, approximately the size of a basketball, at 800psi nearly instantly. The effects of this injection will drop many of the world's largest land predators. The effects of the compressed gas not only cause over-inflation during ascent when used underwater, but also freezes all tissues and organs surrounding the point of injection on land or at sea. When used underwater, the injected gas carries the predator to the surface BEFORE blood is released into the water. Thus giving the diver added protection by diverting other potential predators to the surface.
    Bad day.
