have obviously seen the movie several times, but have never read the book. i'm only about 120 pages in, but i'm loving it so far.

I didn't think it would live up to the movie and was pleasantly surprised.

Just downloaded "Catherine The Great" by Robert Massie. Just read through to 14 year old princess Sophia/Catherine to be, being presented at the Russian court of Tsarina Elisabeth, Peter the Greats daughter, as a wife for the 14 year old heir to the Russian throne. Real long, 1300 pages or so I think.

Pretty interesting so far, if you dig Russian history.

He's a great author. Castles of Steel and Dreadnought are both brilliant history books. I've never read this one but I'll throw it on the kindle.

Finished this a few weeks ago:

I like Ron, and I'll vote for him, but he can't write for $#@!. About half way through the book it turned into a giant rant that made me cringe.

Really good overview of WWI. If you haven't read much about it, it's an excellent book to start with.

She was a great author. The Zimmerman Telegram is one of my favorite history books, really entertaining. Guns of August is a great broad brush overview of the first few months of WW1.

Forgot it doesn't cover the whole war. John Keegan's book about WWI does and is also a good read.

I think it ends just as the Germans fall short at the Marne in 14. It's been 20 years since I read it though.

    Just finished list:
Already Gone, John Rector - meh.
Dance with Dragons, Martin - $#@! yeah!
The Long Walk, Rawicz - $#@! yeah! Thanks Shaggy for the book tip.

    Now reading:
We Die Alone - looks $#@!ing awesome already.

I read The Zimmermann Telegram some years ago, and it is also very compelling. She also wrote The March of Folly and The First Salute, which I have read. Those were her last two books, and I think she got a little bit given to rants in her old age. But The Zimmermann Telegram and The Guns of August were written long before she developed that annoying proclivity.

    Interesting sidenote--I read this:

immediately after reading The Guns of August. Apparently, Tuchman's book weighed heavily on Kennedy's decisionmaking during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Specifically, he was very concerned about the military's advice as to the need for preemptive action, which very much mirrored the advice the Kaiser received in August 1914.

Just finished In the Garden of Beasts. Great read regarding pre-WWII Germany and the world's opinion regarding the country.

Now I am moving onto Truman's biography by McCullough, which is supposed to be one of the best US presidential biographies.

I just read a book on Bill Donovan (leader of the OSS during WWII) it was mildly entertaining. Started The Iron Kingdom about Prussia. Slow going.

Iron Kingdom can be pretty tedious, but it's worth it. The beginning is the hardest part to get through.

found The Land Time Forgot on Amazon kindle for free. I read it when I was in high school and I enjoyed reading it again. There couple parts that are a little dated, but still great book.

It starts very slow, kind of introducing the beginnings of the state. I think it picks up after the first couple of chapters, but unless you're really interested in German history, I can't tell you that it ever turns into a real page-turner.

I still have about 800 pages of Storm of Swords left and I read GRRM slower than other books for some reason, so it'll be a while. I can't wait to read it though...

There was a reprinting a few years ago, and I bought vols 1 & 2 then. I $#@!ed around and didn't buy vol 3 until this year, though, and had to go the used-book route.

I pulled the plug on Road to Serfdom. Didn't realize it was a freaking textbook. Also, I already know socialism sucks, I don't really need the details. The book has derailed my reading pace for a couple weeks now, so time to move on.

I started The Prince by Machiavelli last night.

I've been reading the Count of Monte Cristo cuz it's free on Kindle. It's a chore. I'm about 60% thru and my desire to just give up and read the wiki article is enormous.

I'm only about 40 pages in so far, but I like it. The format is a little different, but I think it enhances the "story," tracing the outbreak of zombies from the genesis across the globe.
