    Best and worst pizza chains

    Least likely to succeed: Sbarro's
...but let's be honest, is that such a bad thing? Sbarro was always there when you needed but its dried-out, hot-plate pizza sometimes made you wish it wasn't. "It could have used a little more stuffing and it felt like it was sitting out a little too long, although I shouldn’t expect too much from a Sbarro in a college food court," writes one patron on the user-generated pizza review site Worst Pizza. But without Sbarro, what are college students, Ninja Turtles, busy parents, and lazy cheese-addicts left with?

    Most improved: Dominos
The delivery chain threw out its old-school recipe after years of complaints and started fresh last year. According to Consumer Reports, they done good. "The sauce was sweet and fresher tasting, though the herbs and spices still tasted dehydrated," reports the magazine's testers. "It had stretchy mozzarella cheese and a garlic flavor... All in all, very good cheese and pepperoni pizza." SeriousEats also gave their pepperoni pizza high marks in their pizza delivery taste test. "The best cheese...tangy, well-seasoned, and actually tastes like mozzarella." The sauce is also more flavorful than ever, according to YumSugar's taste test, but the crust still "doesn't possess even an iota of crispiness."

Worst for you: Uno Chicago Grill's Deep Dish Individual Pizza
You got your tomatoes, your sausage, your cheese and your 2,300 calories. Eating one of these 'personal' pizzas is the same as eating 18 slices of Domino's Crunchy Thin Crust cheese pizza, according to Men's Health. That's not to say it isn't delicious

    Worst tasting: Little Caesar's
The little guy in the toga is cute, but nobody ever has anything good to say about the food. Serious Eats calls their pepperoni under-seasoned, their cheese rubbery and their dough barely cooked. Food editors at the Florida Times-Union, also gave the chain the lowest rating in their taste test. "Remember that pizza they served in the middle school cafeteria? Yeah, that was better.

    Best tasting: Papa John's
PJ's beat Pizza Hut and Dominos in Serious Eats' pizza showdown, and their every-topping-in-the-universe option won the highest marks on PJ's menu. "Vegetables had better flavor than either Domino's or the Hut," reports the blog's tester. "Its pizzas seemed to be made with more care, were tastier overall, and seemed to use better ingredients." But if you like a crispy crust, look elsewhere. The thick breaded base is repeatedly described by taste tests as "chewy."

Best overall pie: Pizza Hut's Pizza Mia
Serious Eats crowned the chain's Pizza Mia, with bacon and olives, most delicious. "The crust was had a nice crispness to it ... the olives were flavorful...and the balance of crust, sauce, and cheese was pretty much on. We were all stunned that this thing came out of Pizza Hut." While the chain didn't get any raves on their other pies, they do have more options low-fat options than any other franchise. Nobody wants to taste-test them though.

Worst overall pie: Chuck E. Cheese
The San Francisco Chronicle's reviewer describes their pies as having "that distinct Kraft singles layered on Heinz ketchup flavor." Other food bloggers have called the sauce "metallic" and the crust "defrosted." Then there's the fact that the chain's mascot is a mouse. Not that it matters. There's Skee-Ball.

I have always been a Pizza Inn guy but honestly there are so many great mom and pop options in Dallas that I never eat many of the big chains any longer.

This is the right answer in Atlanta as well. Between Antico's Pizza, Varassano's, and my kick ass grill pizza I really have become a snob towards the major pizza chains. They all taste like dog $#@! to me know.

I haven't tried Dominos since they supposedly improved. The comment about the mom and pop shops is spot on though - I can swing by Tony C's in Bee Cave on the way home and get 2 mediums for $20, which beat the crap out of anything from a chain.

There's a new shop called Carmela's that's opening in the little strip center across from Bert n' Ernie's on Hamilton Pool Rd. Hopefully it's good because at 5 miles, it's the closest place to my house.

Has anyone tried the Pizza Hut Pizza Mia? It looks pretty good.

Dominos is a night and day difference from how it used to be. I grew up on Pizza Hut but absolutely cant stand it...it is always a choice between PJs and Dominos now. Usually Dominos wins because they actually will enter my apartment building to deliver to my door.

Is Pizza Inn considered a big chain anymore? Growing up, it was our go-to.

Yes, pretty good cheap pizza. When I worked next to one I would stop and buy 2 or 3 (They were $5.00 each at the time. Don't know if they still are) for pizza night when we had both the kids

I was a dominos deilvery driver and got robbed and the $#@! beat out of me one night. Dominoes didn't pay my all my hospital bills. So I have no love for them, but there new pizza recipe is very very good.

Of course, there is a local place right by me that I go to most often. Mainly just because they have $#@! you can't get at chains.

I live in NYC so I always hit up the local joints but it's surprising how well Dominoes and Papa Johns do here. There is a Papa John's right across the street and that $#@! is always busy. I guess because it's cheap.

I am ashamed that I will order Pizza Hut meat lovers.

Little Caesars will sell you a large pizza for $4 on Tuesdays. Its certainly not the best pizza in the world, but its not bad either...and its a whole pizza for $4.

Domino's thin crust is our go-to for pizza around here. If we are in Little Rock, there is a chain called Larry's that is great. Their lunch buffet is awesome.

Yep, if I'm interested in ordering cheap pizza from a chain, it's Domino's all the way.

I usually order their deal where you get two medium, two topping pizzas for $5.99 each. I get one in their regular crust, and one in their crispy crust.

I also get each pizza with two different topping choices on each side, so I get four different pizza combinations delivered to my door for around $15.00.

Their online ordering system is nice, it has a tracker showing the status of your order (prep, bake, quality check, out for delivery), and the one I order from usually has my order to my place in 20 minutes or less.

I hate Papa Johns for two reasons 1. Their pizza sucks, they give you that garlic butter to hide the $#@!ty pizza flavor and 2. One of their delivery drivers ran over my dog when I was in the 3rd grade. If I need to order pizza I tend to stick with Austin's Pizza, but if I am with a bunch of douchers who don't want to nut up and spend a few extra dollars for better pizza, I prefer dominoes.

    Papa Johns is vile.

The new Dominos is pretty good. Pizza Hut just tastes too greasy to me.

Abo's and Garlic Knot are my go-to here in Denver.

if my pizza hut took online orders, i'd order from them. love me some meat lovers pan pizza. as is, i love papa johns. best deals and i love the garlic butter for my crusts.

i haven't paid for a dominoes pizza in probably 20 years. i doubt i ever will, given the option.

  28. #28
It's either Yaghi's or Gatti's for us. Grew up with Pizza Hut but haven't had it in years. PJs is alright, but the sauce is too sweet for me. Don't like the new Domino's and haven't had Little Caesar's for god knows how long.

  29. #29
i ordered Papa John's one time in my life. ate 1 piece and threw the rest away. emailed their corporate office telling them how bad their product is. the sauce was terrible. they had manager of the store call me and offer me free pizza next time i ordered. i asked why i would want a free pizza when i would just throw it away.

i just don't get how that place got to be so big.

We tried Papa John's when in Laramie for the Longhorn game in 2009. Terrible pizza. We have now gotten one of the thin crust varieties at
Papa Murphy's Take and Bake a few times and they are pretty good; the sauce has a little bite to it.

Domino's thin crust is awesome for cheap pizza. Also it takes them like five minutes to make, which comes in handy when you're hungry and drunk.
Respect to who mentioned Pizza Inn, they're hard to find but their thin crust sausage is hard to beat. The best delivery in DFW is I Fratelli.

There is a Pizza Inn here in Texarkana and I've never been. With all the recs in this thread I will have to check it out.

Used to love getting a slice from Giovanni's at Highland Mall back in the day. Cozzoli's wasn't too bad when they took them over.

I used to eat at Pizza Inn as a kid, in Huntsville (no, not the prison). Haven't seen one since. I did used to like Godfather's here in Austin, although when you're a kid any pizza tastes good.

That is why I put they are better than the chains. After you eat at those places, you will think chains suck ass.

    1a. Pizza Hut
    1b. Papa Johns

Decision normally comes down to which has the best deal at the time.

I also think Papa John's is terrible, so I'm surprised to see anyone rate it favorably, but if you look at the list it is basically beating out Little Caeser's. I don't think I'd want to eat anything on that list. I broke both my legs a few years ago and while stuck at home in my chair I loved me some 459-2222.

I always thought Peter Piper was okay, are they national? I've known several people that worked there and all of them refuse to disparage the pie, but that was a few years ago now...

Papa John's is the best chain pizza, but dominoes has made a good push with the new recipe.

I thought Papa Johns was amazing when I first had it. Of course, I was stoned out of my mind. So this probably had something to do with it, as it's disappointed me pretty much every time since.

Little Ceasar's is $#@!ing disgusting. I've probably had 2 of their $5 pizzas over the past year, and both times they gave me rocketshits.

Said it before in other threads. One thing I do not miss about living in Texas is the lack of quality options when it comes to pizza, especially joints that will deliver, chain included. When I lived in N Austin we could basically get delivery from Papa Js and Dominos. Papa's may use better ingredients, but I agree with others that their pizza tastes like $#@!. The new dominos is improved, for sure, but I'm still not a big fan of the hand tossed. If I am craving Dominos it is almost always a thin or one of the deep dishes (I don't think all locations have these). I will eat the $#@! out of a Pizza Hut thin crust. The Pizza Mias are pretty decent, but Pizza Huts meat (roni and italian sausage specifically) is so bad I don't think my dog would eat it. Little Caesar's is turrible, but I will eat the $#@! out of a $5 Hot n Ready when the occasion calls for it. Crazy Bread is $.

We have some great "chain" pizza joints up here (I know, it's because we're all pasty and fat). Some are not just limited to MI, either - Hungry Howies is pretty good, Jets is awesome, Papa Romanos very good. Cottage Inn I think is a MI-only chain, but these are all quality options that blow away "the big 4" above.

I live in South Austin, and I can have Pizza Hut, Domino's, Papa John's, Mr. Gatti's, Austin's Pizza, Rockin' Tomato, Milano's, and Southside Flying Pizza to deliver to my place, and possibly others. When you say N. Austin do you mean like Avery Ranch or some other far flung corner of Austin?

No but actually the area was still developing quite a bit. It was Parmer/I-35 area. The pizza selection was for $#@!. If I wanted decent pizza we had to trek to Saccone's on N 187, Mangia, or Baris. It's been a long time, I'm sure it has changed a lot.

Ah, yes. Even ten years ago the area around Parmer and I-35 was still fairly sparse. Not so much anymore, though. I would imagine the selection is a little better now.
