Someone keeps trying to reset my email password

My personal email provider is Yahoo and for the past few weeks I've been getting a message that someone is trying to recover the password. I'm sure it's some automated process just attempting to hack into emails.

My password is super-cryptic (it's the first letter of a long phrase with random symbols and numbers thrown in) and my secret questions only things I would know. Still, this pisses me off.

Has this happened to anyone else? I wonder how big of a hassle it is if your email is hacked.

It depends what they do with it. I imagine they want access in order to use it to recover passwords from bank accounts, etc.

Yes! My wife's login with Bank of America has this continually happen. We got paranoid the first time it happened so we changed her password to something crazy and changed our security questions. It keeps happening and BOA just shrugs their shoulders.

Thankfully even if they get in there is only $100 in there since we switched everything over to USAA online checking. It's still annoying though.

I help my dad bank @ BoA and I was using the wrong log in info. I requested a password reset (for the wrong account). I finally realized what was going on after I had called BoA and they said "yeah, you are using the wrong user name"

so someone has a similar log in and is trying to log into your account using their password, I bet

This. After my divorce, I changed my logon, but I misremembered my new username. Some poor schlub likely kept getting emails to recover his password.

Some Yahoo user set up a similar email to yours, and he isn't remembering it correctly.

on average a real good hacking algorithm would take a few million years to hack my banking pword. As an example there is nothing personally identifiable to me for Shaggy and my work intranet and VPN pwords are just as complex and change them every 90 days

isn't that called brute force? and after so many failed attempts (on some sites) it shuts it down and no longer allows it to be logged into until some many hours have passed

There is also the possibility that Yahoo! has NOT been sending this message & every time you click the link provided, you're going to a phish site.

First of all, I never click on the link provided. I'm not that stupid. I go directly into Yahoo to check my password and security questions.

Second of all, I do check the links within the email to see if they point to a Yahoo domain, and they did.

I'm concerned that someone or some thing is trying to hack into my mail account. Sure, Yahoo is telling me to do nothing and everything is fine but I'm not a tech person and I'd like to hear some similar stories and how they were dealt with.

It's like my friend who was in one of the twin towers when it was hit. The building management told him to stay put and not panic. He said "$#@! that" and got the hell out of the building.

Yes, I just compared someone hacking my email to 9/11.

Did anyone's Rabbi warn them about Yahoo email last Saturday?

Not trying to be critical at all but I am not a nerd - what is the best way to check the link?

I know that even opening the email confirms your address is live, but after opening, all I know to do is copy link and paste special unformatted text into word to see what appears. The right-click properties is not helpful usually.

    Best way?

Just hover over a link and you'll see the target address at the bottom of your browser.
